Blogger Q&A with a Panthers Blogger

Hello to Revenge of the Birds and Cardinal fans in general. Jaxon here from Cat Scratch Reader to answer any questions you may have about the Panthers and their home match-up against your beloved Cardinals. I have to admit in my preseason predictions I ticked a 'W' next to this one but now I'm not so confident. Your defense has been playing well and gave us fits last season. The offense is much improved and should present quite a challenge tot he secondary. Plus, you are playing great special teams which has been our Achilles Heal (three blocked punts season-to-date)

Let me just go ahead and answer one question I'm bound to get since I get it every week. There is nothing wrong with Julius Peppers, we still love the guy and hope to sign him to a big deal soon. Though he only has four sacks he has just as many forced fumbles and can create havoc on any play. He essentially changed the flow of the game last week against the Saints with a FF that led to a TD. He also had a key 4th and 1 stop and if you watch him, he's making plays 20 yards downfield. We love us some Julius Peppers.

I welcome any questions you may have and look forward to our match-up in Charlotte.

Go Panthers!

Outside of Julius Peppers, where does the pass rush come from? Do the Panthers blitz much or rely on the front four to bring the pressure?

by cgolden on Oct 21, 2008 12:52 PM MDT reply actions

The Panthers only have 11 sacks on the season

4 by Pep, 2 by the DE on the other side Tyler Brayton (FA pick-up from Oakland) and 2 by his back-up Charles Johnson. On obvious passing downs you might see our rookie pass rush specialist from UNC Hilee Taylor (no relation to the original LT). The Panthers can generate pressure but so far they’ve been a step slow on a lot of occasions.

Mixed bag

Steve Smith a cancer: malignant or benign?

Delhomme: recovered or looking for the “future” sooner than later at the QB spot?

O-line: the player you love and the player that makes you cringe on the o-line.

Realignment: who do the Panther’s miss playing the most from the old NFC West, 49ers or Rams?

George Bush: Great President or Greatest President EVER?

We all leave footprints in the sands of time, just watch out for the discarded fish hooks!

I've respond in order

Smith – Benign; we have a couple years before his next blow up. Besides, the guy makes so many plays its easy to over look his prima donna act

Delhomme – fully recovered; in all honesty his arm looks stronger than ever (he’s actually overthrown Steve Smith on deep patterns) I expect him to stay a Panthers at least for 3-4 more years

O-line: Though he’s missed three games due to an ankle injury I have loved what I’ve seen from Jeff Otah. When he locks on a guy he drives him across the field (Just ask Tommie Harris)

Realignment – 49ers – I’d like to be putting a spanking on those guys as payback.

Bush – Your kidding right? He is easily the worst Lets not mix football and politics.

Thanks Jaxon

Yes, I’m kidding. As I was thinking of question I had a Steven Cobert flashback moment so had to throw out his patented question. I hope I don’t get sued…

Any part of the o-line that makes you nervous? Lutui is the Cardinals’ question mark on the line.

Living in Northern California, there’s many Niner fans that still won’t put the ’96 season to rest, unlike recent years for that team.

Rivalries shift from year to year but who is the Panthers’ biggest divisional rival? Falcons? Saints? Bucs?

Er, Steven Colbert...

Didn’t the Panthers have a WR by the name of Steven Colbert? That wasn’t the girlfriend murdering guy? That was Ray Carruth, right?

used to live in SC. was a huge panthers fan at the time.

was really looking forward to the expansion bowl ( i’m always giving names to everything) between the expansion panthers and jaguars in 95 or 96 i believe. thought they would meet in the superbowl.

Panthers in 95 or 96

Man I loved it when they beat the Cowboys in the playoffs in whatever year that was. I had that game on VHS for several years and watched it several times just to see the hated-Cowboys get bounced in the playoffs.

Mixed recycled paper bag

Outcome: How bad will the Panthers beat us? By 23 like the Saints? A shutout like KC?

Steve Smith: Any chance Fox and Herny would be willing to trade Smith to us for our entire offense?

Delhomme: What is it like to have a QB that doesn’t get Senior Citizen discounts?

Come on southtunnell, like I wouldn't recognize you

I believe some would call this acting like a ‘troll’. He’s joking Card fans…he’s a Panther fan here to get your goat.

I will give a prediction though: Panthers 20 Cardinals 13

Points will be higher

I may be wrong on this, but I think the last time the Cards were held to fewer than 20 points was last year’s Panther game when Warner’s elbow was injured. 31-24 is more likely.

err Washington held us to 17

But the Cardinals did have the longest streak for 20+ games before that

by cgolden on Oct 22, 2008 8:32 AM MDT up reply actions

I hope the Cards have blocked out the last East Coast trip like I have

Somehow I had it in my mind it was a 24-20 loss in Washington…my bad. This is what I get for relying solely on memory and not looking things up. Not that I’d want to look that game up for anything!

We held the Saints to 7 last week in Charlotte

I remember three things from last years game without going to the actual recap:
1. Steve Smith toasting your CB for a TD – Will that be DRC (playing, not necessarily getting toasted) this year?
2. Darnell Dockett and LilBoy eating our lunch – Man I hope Otah can play this week
3. Peppers causing a sack & fumble on the QB

by Jaxon on Oct 22, 2008 9:26 AM MDT up reply actions

3 things from last year.

LaBoy didn’t play for us last year. But watch out for him. Delhommo will get put out of the game. Its a trend with these boys. Take no prisoners and leave no witnesses.

by hevchv on Oct 22, 2008 9:47 AM MDT up reply actions

Oh yeah, he was with Tennessee right?

He did torment us, just a different game

by Jaxon on Oct 22, 2008 11:19 AM MDT up reply actions

Jeremy Bridges

He’s started about 16-18 games for the panthers over the last couple years at both guard and tackle. Obviously he got beat out by a rookie (of course considering the price the Panther paid for Otah) but he’s played well in his stead. Can he handle Dockett? Errr…lets just say thats a key match-up for you guys if Otah can’t go. Actually Otah will have trouble with Dockett as well.

I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com

by Jaxon on Oct 22, 2008 11:21 AM MDT up reply actions

definitely higher

When the Panthers win, they have been averaging 27 points. Since the Panthers o-line has been really good in pass protection, and the Cards secondary is suspect, I think they will get that 27. Since they have prevented other high powered offenses from even a single TD, I will give the Cards just 1 TD… assuming they are 1 TD better than the saints and falcons. Tack on a couple field goals just in case.

Prediction: Panthers 27 Cardinals 13

Defense Needs to bring it to win.

If we can employ the same defensive tactics that have been working the last two games we have a ball game. We seem to be vulnerable when teams run to the outside.

Offense, Warner needs to get into a grove outside of Phoenix and the O-line give him time.

I think we have a ball game

by badmatty53 on Oct 22, 2008 10:00 AM MDT reply actions

DeAngelo Williams loves the cut back to the outside

He will certainly look to that

I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com

by Jaxon on Oct 22, 2008 11:23 AM MDT up reply actions

Jonathan Stewart can cut to the outside too

Though not as experienced… He is just as quick as Williams, but much stronger. He can carry the ball just about anywhere, and he is a beast to tackle.

by southtunnel on Oct 23, 2008 7:19 PM MDT up reply actions

but will they be able to run on us. Clancy Pendergast, our D coordinator, is trying to make a name for himself as a future head coach.

He knows we can’t afford anymore huge plays against us. This includes runs to the outside. If LaBoy can’t go, expect more of a run stopping DE/LB to replace him. The ends WILL collapse and the lanes will be gone. No where to go but through the air.

by hevchv on Oct 23, 2008 7:28 PM MDT up reply actions

Snowball

Well to be honest, Williams and Stewart won’t chip away at your D. Instead they start off with only about 2 or 3 yards per carry. But then like you said, you will get a big pass play. And once that happens you will start to see a few of those 2 or 3 yards turn into about 10. And this snowballs through the half. By the time the 4th quarter rolls around, Smitty, Muhammad, Williams and Stewart will all be making big plays.

I like that subtle but humble thing you did right there. When I talked trash on the Bears blog they got all hot-headed and flustered. I guess in Arizona you guys are a little more intelligent with your words.

I agree mostly

The Cardinals may shut down the run in the first half but just know the Panthers will still try to run in the 2nd half. If they break some 5-8 yd runs early that will give them confidence going forward and they will keep running it but mix in short passes. The Panthers usually test you deep at least once in their first two possessions so watch for that. I think it was Hood that Smitty beat deep last season (from Testaverde).

underrated is the cards pass rush...

which we have all said at one point or another that if the coaches let the dogs loose, they will be dominant. since doing so the last couple of weeks the results have been more than favorable. why stop now? its one thing to understand the problem, its another to fix it. right now I don’t think any team has an answer for this pass rush. it also masks our deficiencies in the secondary. the pass rush can be neutralized with quick slants and quick fades. I would also say draws and bellies up the gut, but the cards are actually good against the run as well. given up about 97 yards/game. and the panthers give up 100+/game. that means if our backs can get about 90 yards, we’ll keep the D honest enough to expose them. expect grey beard to lute and pillage their secondary. out!!!

by hevchv on Oct 22, 2008 10:47 AM MDT reply actions

good points

A consistent pass rush should also prevent Steve Smith from having the time to get deep. If they can keep him from breaking off a 30+ yard reception, I like our chances.

by cgolden on Oct 22, 2008 11:11 AM MDT up reply actions

The Panthers throw the quick slant to both WR's a lot

Jake can be rattled by a quick rush so that’s what I would do.

by Jaxon on Oct 22, 2008 11:24 AM MDT up reply actions

Not saying that our run d isn't good.

It seems that the better backs we have faced have gotten the most yards and long runs when they cut outside.

If we keep bringing the pressure and Warner doesn’t miss his 20 kids too much to bring his A game. We can have a heck of a game! Looking forward to it.

by badmatty53 on Oct 22, 2008 11:44 AM MDT up reply actions

like i said a few weeks ago we are vulnerable on the outside.

only makes sense to me to keep robinson starting at the nose tackle. with big gabe in we will force teams to run outside. with robinson in, they will attempt more on the inside which is where our strength actually lies against the run. i know its odd, but it makes since to me, and from what i’m hearing, robinson will remain the starter for now.

by hevchv on Oct 22, 2008 11:49 AM MDT up reply actions

You guys run a 3-4?

I was thinking you ran a 4-3. When you say nose tackle I’m thinking 3-4.

I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com

by Jaxon on Oct 22, 2008 12:37 PM MDT up reply actions

yea as hevchv said it's a mixture of both

They technically call in a hybrid 3-4. I’d explain it as they line up like a 4-3 most of the time but they play like 3-4 as far as blitzes and applying pressure.

by cgolden on Oct 22, 2008 12:53 PM MDT up reply actions

Well thats interesting

So they always put a LB on the line, one side or the other? I’ll have to watch that closely.

I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com

by Jaxon on Oct 22, 2008 1:23 PM MDT up reply actions

Mobile DE moved to LB

Travis LaBoy, Bertrand Berry, Calvin Pace, Chike Okeafor, those are the types of players lining up at LB but playing more of a DE-style. Effectively edge rushers that can drop back in coverage with TEs and RBs.

We all leave footprints in the sands of time, just watch out for the discarded fish hooks!

by Hawkwind on Oct 22, 2008 1:32 PM MDT up reply actions

yea

LaBoy seems like he lines up with his hand on the ground most of the time which gives the look of a 4-3. Chike plays it more like a 3-4 OLB and I can’t remember him putting his hand on the ground very often.

by cgolden on Oct 22, 2008 1:37 PM MDT up reply actions

The Panthers drop their DE's into coverage a lot as well

Not just certain ones either. Brayton, Peppers, Johnson will all drop into a zone usually while one of the LB’s or DB’s blitzes. If you see Hilee Taylor in there on a 3rd and long you can bet he’s rushing.
