Thought's on Leinart vs. Warner?

What are your thoughts on the Leinart vs. Warner controversy. Obviously we have to keep Warner around while he's got a hot hand, but what do we do with Leinart? After listening to most of the knuckle heads on azcentral's posting I would like to hear from real fans. Do you think he will stay around if he is riding the pine like he is now? The ideal situation would be for him to stcik around and learn all he can from one of the greastest Quaterbacks to ever play the game for as long as he could. Sort of like Rogers did, but for some reason I don't think his ego will allow that.

Thoughts?

Leinart

I get asked nearly this exact some question every week in our weekly Q&A sessions. I’m still maintaining that Matt will get his chance to start at some point in the future. I still think that he can be a decent starter in this league and he might be one right now. The fact is he’s playing behind a guy who’s putting up arguably the best numbers in the league.

The interesting battle will be how they handle the QB job next year duing camp.

Leinart will get his shot in a Cardinals uniform

May happen this Sunday considering the trend against the Rams in St. Louis.

Leinart will be the starter for the Arizona Cardinals soon enough. With the uncertaintities of how much of the current roster will be participating in OTAs next Spring, Leinart is about the only certainty. Warner may or may not want to play next year. I suspect that if the Cardinals win the Super Bowl (LOL, I cannot say that with a straight face, sorry guys), Warner will be happy to retire. If the Cards get past the first round of the playoffs, I suspect that will be enough of a “tease” to have him want to come back and that’s the crux of the matter, isn’t it?

There is two options then: sign him or send him off.

The sign him method suggests that the Cards offer Warner a contract for another two years. The contract ought to be incentive laden to assure he gets starter money if he’s the starter; this way Warner can be the starter for ’09 and give Leinart a third season of being the understudy. Just like Rodgers in GB. The last year it should be made clear that the franchise has all intentions of going with Leinart.

By sending him off, the franchise is going with Leinart and trying to capitalize on the money already invested. This is the “old” Cardinals mentality so it will be interesting to see what happens.

Leinart has the talent and the ability to be the franchise quarterback he has been herarld to be. The man needs to taste some success to have the mind ready to play. I think he’s feeling it already just watching Warner. He’s watching “the champ” do his thing and will know how to go about it himself. I have every confidence that Leinart is a better player for this and look forward to his opportunity to shine under the lights.

I just hope it’s ‘09 with a fat ring on his hand and Warner’s name going up in the ring of honour.

Elect Warner for two more years

I’m with you Hawkwind. I’d like to see Warner sign a two year contract with one year as the unquestioned starter, we need to make sure he feels welcome to come back, and one clearly stated as a quarterback competition for the second and final year or as you mentioned with clear intentions of making Leinart the starter that second year (his last year on contract I think) and have Warner to continue as a field mentor.

I think he will get a shot in a Cardinals uniform, as it currently stands I’d prefer it not be in ‘09. I think Warner has what it takes to give us one more amazing year, and we’ve got the offense in place to do it, and I have a crazy idea about why it will actually be in Leinart’s benefit to wait for one more year.

CRAZY IDEA TO FOLLOW:
I often compare Leinart to Rogers and think that both will be great, though with Leinart I think he will only be great if he loses a little more of the “I’m a star” attitude. Which is happening a little more each game that Warner performs, the team grows into a winner, and the attitude changes to realizing the potential of the team. In reality, if everything goes the way it seems it will, Leinart should actually feel more at home behind center with a team that is very similar to the one that made him great, USC.

Leading a team that is expected to win, that has championship caliber players and coaches, and is always treated as threat is exactly the same situation where he came from and would be exactly what he would take the helm of after one more season of the Cardinals establishing themselves as having “arrived” and taking control of the NFC West.

Just my thoughts.

I concur

Coming from established success that was only maintained by a player doesn’t guarantee generated success in the pro’s where there isn’t established success. Even the great Peyton Manning had a hellacious rookie season (2-14, right?) before the pieces began to fall into place. Once the team culture expects to have success, as long as there is talented people to plug into the roster the success should continue to perpetuate. It’s called a “dynasty” and 49’ers had this culture alive and well with a variety of stars filling key roles from 1981 through 1999. I’m not suggesting the Cardinals are on the brink of a dynasty; their trend is one good season once per decade. Still, the pieces are starting to fall into place and it’s now management’s responsibility to maintain it rather than let the team disintergrate like it did after ’98.

very well said

This could be the verge of sustained success for the first time in most of our lifetimes or the building blocks for another franchise willing to pay these guys. When you think about all of the guys who could conceivably be gone after this season (Dansby, Berry, Green, Haggans, Chike, Lutui, E Brown, Edge, JJ and Warner), it’s a scary thought if you don’t think that management is ready to step up and pay to be a winner.

Thats the conversation I've been trying to avoid.

This could be scary off season. A lot of talent wanting pay checks this summer. Here is to hoping the Bidwells listen to the coaching staff when comes time to make some decisions.
