Around SBN: SB Nation NFL Power Rankings for Week 11

Apparently we're not the only ones who are disappointed with the tight end position. Whiz should have his four tight ends healthy this Sunday but he's made it clear that he's not happy with any of them. He's said that right now it's an open competition for playing time and that any one of them could end up starting this Sunday. He also said that some of the struggles in the ground game are attributable to poor blocking from the tight ends. Overall it sounds like put up or shut up time for Leonard Pope, Ben Patrick, Jerame Tuman and Stephen Spach. At least one of them will be inactive against the Seahawks and one of them will likely be cut once they all get back to 100%. The only question is who?

I thought Spach looked pretty...

darn good for how familiar he was with the offense. His run blocking was solid, a lot better that Pope’s ever was. Pope it too tall to get low and get leverage on the defense. I have liked what Patrick does when he’s healthy too. I really couldn’t say who would be cut, who do you think it will be?

Spach has been solid except...

…on that last Hightower run for the first down that was a loss of 4 yards. Spach was late on snap and the ends were past him before he made contact which led to that play getting blown up. I figured that play alone at that critical juncture would put Spach into the disappointed category of the rest.

We all leave footprints in the sands of time, just watch out for the discarded fish hooks!

Yeah that sucks...

It does take a while to get used to a new QB’s cadance but that’s no excuse.

your guess is as good as mine

But if we’re guessing here, I’d say Pope is a real possibility to be let go. Here’s the case against him, IMO:

1. He’s the only guy at the position that doesn’t have ties to current staff. He was a Denny pick, not a Whiz guy.
2. He’s doesn’t really excel in any one area. He’s not the best receiver on the team (we can all agree that Patrick is better right?) and he’s certainly not the best blocker.
3. He’s a restricted free agent after the season. Of course they’ll probably be able to bring him back pretty cheap but does Whiz really want a big tight end who can’t block and isn’t that good of a receiver?

And all his bonehead offside penalties!

1 advantage to him is his endzone threat that I can see.

good point on the penalties

I really fear him playing at Quest Field and all that noise. Him a Deuce are likely to jump at least a couple times.

was ready to post that it would be Pope, but you have it all there.

I know this is a bit off subject but...

I posted it over on the Seahawks website, why is JJ not returning kicks? Seriously, Breaston is more vital to our offense and why risk him getting hurt when we have a great return guy in JJ?

that's a good question

I’ve been wondering the same thing. I don’t see the downside to him returning at all. First of all he’s better at it and it saves Breaston for offense. The only thing I can think of is maybe Whiz and staff just don’t like him. That would explain why he was inactive until they had no choice but to use him and why Breaston was handed the job even though he was outperformed. That’s just a guess though.
