Dennis Green vs. Josh McCown

Does anyone know the real story of why McCown was benched a few years back? I heard it was because he got into it with Green over some playcalls but never really confirmed it.

Referring to the abrupt benching just before the Carolina game in '04?

Right as the Cards were getting a bit of a winning streak goin? Then Shawn King implodes for a couple of weeks? John Navarre even starts one week in Detroit? Then Green grudgingly goes back to McCown?

I don’t remember if the “real story” was ever stated. I do remember the consensus opinion was McCown and Green didn’t agree on play calls. I vaguely recall something to this effect having happened in Buffalo and against the Kurt Warner-led Giants with Josh changing plays at the line of scrimmage…hell, that soap opera was five seasons ago and most of Dennis Green’s tenure is a blocked out memory except when Coors Light needs a commercial. What spurred this question, boogatt66?

I know it was out of left field...

but on the real I have always liked “McClown”. I liked what he did here with a horrible line and I thought he had some really raw tools to become a solid starter. He still managed to have several 300+ yard games even when he was running for his life. I thought it was bull the way he got benched after it looked like we might be doing something and we never got any explanation. I thought maybe one of you guys had heard something I hadn’t and give me some closure on the subject.

McCown

I always thought he had some skills too. It’s a shame he never got a decent system to acclimate himself to.

Hell, write him an e-mail through the Panther's website

I bet Josh gets so little mail anymore that he’ll likely get it and answer you.
