Damn! I love the way Whisenhunt was thinking there!
Madden used to talk about the free kick all the time and I had never seen it done. The Cards attempt under Green I wasn’t watching at that time and it was pre-TiVo.

Free kick rule:
Anytime you fair catch a punt, you can elect to free kick. A free kick is treated as a FG attempt except the defenders have to line up 10-yards off the line of scrimmage. I thought the kick could be off of a tee, apparently not. TV guys hyped it as it’s been attempted only a handful of times over the past 40 years. It’s rare the circumstances are right to do it.
It would have been sweet if Rackers could have gotten some lift on it and gotten it close. At least Hixon didn’t return it for a TD.
