SB Nation's NFL Mid-Season Studs and Duds for 2008

Ok guys, here's something a little different than what we normally do each day. The network polled each NFL blog on the network for some mid-season awards and here's what we came up with (my picks are at the end):

Clinton Portis is playing like an MVP right now.

The Studs

NFL Mid-Season MVP: Clinton Portis, Redskins

Comment from David the Falconer at The Falcoholic:

The homer in me wants to say Michael Turner, but he's done the majority of his damage against the league's weakest defenses. Portis has put the Redskins on his back and carried them 100 yards or more down the field most games, and for that he deserves my vote.

Best Player on Offense: Clinton Portis, Redskins

Comment from Skins Patrol at Hogs Haven:

He also has 150 yards receiving and has had his role increase with the injury to Ladell Betts Not everyone knows this, but Portis is the best pass protecting RB blocker in the league and is a big reason why Jason Campbell is playing well this season.

Best Players on Defense: Joey Porter, Dolphins

Comment from BigBlueShoe at Stampede Blue:

I thought this guy was DEAD. How the hell does he have 11.5 sacks and 3 forced fumbles? I mean Jeezus, it is only Week Nine and he has 11.5 friggin' sacks! The hell are they feeding them down there in Miami?

Best Rookie: Chris Johnson, Titans

Comment from cgolden at Revenge of the Birds:

No explanation needed. Just watch this kid play and it's obvious why he's truly special. Were we really questioning his status as a first round pick six months ago?

Best Coach: Jim Zorn, Redskins

Comment from WCG at Windy City Gridiron:

I hate doing this, but in that division the Redskins should have easily been the worst team.

Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio has seen better days.

The Duds

Mid-Season Worst Player: JaMarcus Russell, Raiders

Comment from Dave the Falconer at The Falcoholic:

Consider that this guy was the first overall pick in the draft. Then consider that he can't throw a pass without collapsing into a heap.

Mid-Season Worst Rookie: Vernon Gholston, Jets

Comment from cgolden at Revenge of the Birds:

He's learning a new position so this probably isn't fair but seven tackles in eight games for a top six pick is simply unacceptable. You'd think he could at least be a situational pass rusher.

Mid-Season Worst Coach: Jack Del Rio, Jaguars

Comment from Chris at Big Cat Country:

Can I vote for Del Rio and the Jaguars for every possible spot?

Star-divide

My Picks:

MVP: Kurt Warner - He's on pace for over 4,800 yards and 32 TDs and the Cardinals are 5-3. He's had four games with over 350 yards passing and has thrown for multiple touchdowns in seven consecutive weeks. Oh, and he's doing it with a poor running game and suspect defense.

Offensive Player: See Above

Defensive Player: Justin Tuck - He's on pace for 17 sacks and he's held together a defense that could have crumbled when Osi went down.

Rookie: Chris Johnson - No explanation needed. Just watch this kid play and it's obvious why he's truly special. Were we really questioning his status as a first round pick six months ago? In any other year, Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan would be getting some serious love.

Coach: Whoever the Miami HC is - I can't think of the guys name right now but he's taken the Dolphins from a complete laughing stock to instant credibility. They're 4-4 after being 1-15 a year ago. A close second is the Falcons coach.

Worst Player: Derek Anderson - Weren't the Browns supposed to break out this year with DA leading a dynamic group of WRs? Anderson has stunk up the joint and is on the verge of getting benched. That's what happens when you complete 49.8% of your passes, throw seven picks and have seven fumbles in eight games.

Worst Rookie: Vernon Gholston - He's learning a new position so this probably isn't fair but seven tackles in eight games for a top six pick is simply unacceptable. You'd think he could at least be a situational pass rusher.

Worst Coach: Wade Phillips - There are so many deserving candidates for this kick in the crotch but Phillips gets the nod b/c the Cowboys were supposed to locks for the Super Bowl (or at least that's what we were told). They've had injuries but they were playing with their skirts up before Romo went down.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

That's what I came up with. I don't know why there was so much Redskin love from the Network, but what are you gonna do. We'll do the same type of thing at season's end. What do you think? Who would your choices have been?

One Man's Opinion

MVP: Kurt Warner – Portis deserves some accolades but an MVP should help the team make their losses near victories. Where was Portis the past Monday?

Offensive Player: Adam Jones, Incognito on the Rams, Terrell Owens…oh, as in score points “offensive”…Romo and R. Bush were getting there before injuries set them back, Michael Turner deserves some recognition, Greg Jennings in GB…hmmm, Anquan Boldin gets my nod. He’s the next incarnation of Chris Carter, as all he does is “score touchdowns”. And by saying Anquan, half the credit goes to the MVP throwing him the ball but the other half is all Q as some of his catches NO ONE would have caught.

Defensive Player: Haynesworth in Tennessee

Rookie: Matt Forte — I had no idea who this guy was and was wondering why he was drafted so early in my FFL but I’ve seen the light. He IS the Bears running attack.

Coach: Lane Kiffin — Stupid to take the job in the first place, smart to force his departure when he did. Alright, that’s lame, so really Mike Smith in Atlanta. Who? Yeah, that’s why he’s coach of the year. Tony Sparano is a puppet head for Parcells and DQs him in my mind.

Worst Player: DeAngelo Hall — Savior? More like Liberian Prince scam artist to the tune of $8 million for eight games. Now go waste it on whores and blow you p.o.s. excuse for a human being. Yeah, I voted “cancer”. :P

Worst Rookie: Buster Davis, oh wait, wrong season. Darren McFadden? He was hurt…um, what CG said.

Worst Coach: Whoever wears the Head Coach headset in Oakland is doomed to be the worst coach in the league, mostly because the took the job in the first place.

good choices and even better comedy (especially the Buster Davis reference)

I don’t get all the Zorn love I’ve been hearing lately. Didn’t he take over a team that went to the playoffs last year with a backup QB (they even won a playoff game if memory serves)? So why is he the coach of the year so far for leading the team that’s on pace for another wild card berth, especially considering they’ve got no major injuries to speak of (at least none that I can think of)? I don’t think Zorn would even be in my top 5. As for Portis, since when was 1,700 yards and 12 TDs MVP-worthy? Ah, maybe I’m just bitter.

Haynesworth has been simply amazing this year (and he’s an UFA this offseason…shhhh).

Loved Zorn in Seattle with Largent

He’s “okay” as a head coach. He’s made his share of bonehead first year head coach mistakes, especially with clock management. If anything, the Redskins have improved somewhat but that’s to expected with a full draft class and a mostly healthy team (aside from J. Taylor and the fellow he replaced). ::shrugs:: A coach getting more out of a less talented roster is more worthy of Coach of the Year. Smith, Sparano, Fisher, Whisenhunt, they should be get more consideration.

Warner For MVP

This guy is 37 years old and still putting up big numbers. Of course Portis gets the nod but we’ll see how he fares the rest of the season. He may slow down. Drew Brees also has a chance but not if the Saints miss the playoffs, and right now its looking that way.

What happened to JeMarcus Russel?

I know I only watched two of his pre-season games but he seemed pretty promising when he was in there. What do you think is going on with that because I have not watched much of their football. Hawk?

Who do you guys think the best\worst teams are right now in the NFL? Titans\Oakland? Giants\Lions?

I haven’t watched the Raiders a great deal but I’ve stopped down on their games a couple of times this season and he looked terribly inconsistent. He’d make a great throw, then he’d look like a poor-man’s Tavaris Jackson for a series or two. I’m not sure what his deal is but I’m starting to wonder if anyone, no matter of how talented they are, can flourish in Oakland. When you hear stuff like Al Davis making play calls from his suite, you’ve got to wonder if they’ve got any chance.

My best and worst would be: Detroit and NY Giants

Biased opinion

The Raiders’ playbook looks like it is in shambles. Russel is lost, he’s under constant pressure, he cannot read defenses.

Despite their two victories, the Raiders are the worst franchise in the NFL right now. The Lions at least are making efforts. They nearly beat the Bears. The Raiders produced a record low offensive output last week and make personnel moves based on the level of Davis’ medication at that given moment. Best team is the Giants right now. I’m looking forward to their visit in a couple of weeks.
