Why the Cardinals?

Hawk checks in with a great fan post that I just had to bump to the main page. He's got a question that every Cardinal should ask themselves. We're not a decorated or glamorous group but we're loyal and passionate. Now tell us why....cgolden

By far, this is the most common question I hear when NFL football is the discussion and I am asked "who's your team?".  After I say "Cardinals" there's usually a prolonged period of laughter and the question as to why that team (said as to suggest the Cardinals franchise instigated the Black Death of the Dark Ages), but usually with a few colourful metephors to boot.

I live in Northern California where the Raiders and 49ers are the teams of choice with a large representation of Cowboys, Steelers, Bears, and Patriots fans as well.  In 35+ years of living in the greater Sacramento metropolitan area, I've seen all of one Cardinals insignia on a vehicle (aside from my bedecked vehicle), and that was just a month ago.  Indeed, why do I root for the perennial losers, the Chicago/St. Louis/Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals?

I have my reasons, they go back to one of the first NFL telecasts I can remember watching in 1975 between the Cowboys and Cardinals.  I shared the last name with the Cardinals quarterback in those days and when my father walked through the room, I asked if we were related to 'ol #17.  "We might be son, as your great-great grandfather immigrated from Ireland and passed through St. Louis where his two brothers settled."  That was enough for me.  Jim Hart was related to me, so I'm rooting for him no matter what!  As such, I've rooted for the Cardinals since that day;  perhaps not as emphatically as I've done for the past 11 years (thank you NFL Sunday Ticket), but they've always been "my team".

The Cowboys won that game.  I immediately took to disliking that team, a fact that grew stronger as time passed to build into a seething loathing.

So what I wonder, why do you, fellow Revenge of the Birds readers, why do you  root for the NFL Cardinals?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Revenge of the Birds' (ROTB) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of ROTB's editors.

Great job Hawk

I had to bump this one to the front page.

I’ve been a Cardinals fan since the mid 90’s (when I gained football consciousness). I’ve always lived in Texas and growing up in Cowboy country has never been easy but my pure football heart wouldn’t allow me to root for such a dirty franchise (especially those mid to late 90’s Cowboys teams). I latched onto the Cardinals and never looked back. I’ve taken my share of strange looks and criticism over the years but at least we’ve had bragging rights over the Cowboys for 10 years.

Understand the Dallas thing...

I think everyone should root for they’re home team unless they live in Dallas.

But you didn’t mention what it was that made you go with Arizona. Was there any event or game in particular that caused you to start following them? I’m guessing it wasn’t because it was the cool thing to do at the time. lol

by AJ BirdWatcher on Aug 29, 2008 7:14 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

to be honest

I started following two teams in the mid 90’s, the Cardinals and the Steelers. The main reason that I chose those two was because both were hated in Cowboy country. I really started following the Cardinals when they drafted Jake the Snake and I was hooked after they beat down the Cowboys right here in Dallas. I’ve been addicted ever since and needless to say I was ecstatic when we got Whiz and Grimm from PIT and I really think they’ll become the stabilizing force in Arizona for quite some time.

It was quiet last night, too quiet

It was too quiet last night on the site and I had no desire to watch a Vikings/Cowboys preseason game on NFLN so…I figured I pose this question to the group out of curiosity. Thank you for the bump. I have to admit that the Broncos section on SBNation irked me into posting something after reading someone’s comment that “the Cards site hasn’t had a fan post in weeks, we’re so much better than them”. Oxygen deprivation makes you think/say the darndest things…

I had no idea you’d be hunkered down in the middle of Cowboys territory, CG. Have you made it to a game at Texas Stadium bedecked in your Cardinals gear yet? If so, let’s compare stories sometime…Oakland has some real “winners” at their games and the Niner fans are only slightly better.

Thank you all that have responded. It’s good to hear from some AZ locals as I saw more Steelers and Cowboys fans the last two times I was in the Valley than Cardinal fans. We’re those teams the AFC/NFC game of the week on local TV before the Cards arrived?

I’ve actually been to games at Texas Stadium in Cardinal gear and 49er gear. Before I get jumped though, my best friend is a Niner and we agreed that we’d wear each others colors to a game not so much to support each other teams but to root against the Cowboys. I’m been on the losing side and I’ve been on the winning side and while Cowboys fans are ultra-annoying, there are enough fans from other teams that you’re not alone up there. Especially during the years that we went 2001-2003 or so when the Cowboys were down and hometown fans would sell their tickets because they’re all band wagon, front running fans.

nice

Great story Hawk. Your writing style’s great. Keep em coming, I’d love to hear your recountings of some of the best and worst memories as a Cards fan your whole life.

Good stuff.

Just one question though – why the f*&^ are you a Cardinals fan again? Lol. Just kidding. My favorite baseball player was Chris Sabo. He was legally blind, wore Rec Specs, and waddled when he walked to the plate. I guess we can’t always choose who we fall in love with.

Recounted ramblings

Sadly, there’s been so many “worst” memories that they all seem to blur together. Aside from a few individual accomplishments, most of the past 30 seasons have been such “turds” that I’ve just flushed them out of the mind and put on the rose-tinted glasses of the off season. The ’80’s were aggravating as Lomax and the offense could light up the scoreboard but the defense couldn’t stop a high school team…well, a good FL high school team. The ’90’s were proof positive that former “star” coordinators do not make good head coaches. ::sigh::

Most of my positive memories match those that AZcentral posted over the summer. The Niner/Cards game in ‘88 was awesome. ’98 of course…I saw the Cards live twice that year. Aeneas Williams’ 103 yard fumble return that dreadful 3-13 season. Anquan’s first game against Detroit. Storming back to win in Mexico City.

Still, those are all single plays and games. It’s time to reflect on a whole season fondly once more. ‘98 was a long time ago, ’75 is ancient history, and ’47 may as well be prehistoric. The time is now and let’s enjoy this season through this wonderfully managed site.

Home teams & Underdogs

Nice job Hawk. This is a cool thread idea.

I’m not going to lie here. For I’ve really only been into football for about four years. Before that, if anybody asked who my team was, I would respond with something like “Whoever plays the Cowboys any given week.” Around the 2005 season or so, I began following the fall tradition of watching football every Sunday with friends, and just naturally latched on to the Cards as the home team.

I must be either old fashioned or just simply too proud of my Arizona heritage to root for any other city in any sport. But I don’t have the same passion for the D-backs, Suns or ‘Yotes. I root for them of course, and will gladly go to a game if anyone’s got extra tickets. (Hell, I’ll even buy the beer.) For some reason though, I just can’t seem to really get into those sports like I do football. Maybe its that the Cards are the perrenial underdogs that sparked something in my soul. Hopefully, that will change eventually and I can learn to root for a winner.

Since the beginning, my love for the Cardinals had grown steadily from simply rooting for them whenever I could catch a game to where I follow every offseason activity and transaction. Here I am now in 2008 as a first time season ticket holder, and I can never imagine being a fan of any other team.

by AJ BirdWatcher on Aug 29, 2008 7:07 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

So if I buy the beer...

…and make the 17 hour drive to Phoenix/Glendale, you’ve got the extra ticket, AJ? ::wink::

Enjoy the season, live, AJ. Where are you at? If I get a crowd shot during a game I’ll pause TiVo and look for you. We need to get you hooked up with a “Revenge of the Birds” banner for some in-game advertising.

Only if you got an extra ticket to the 49ers next week!

I’m in section 135 row 30. Thats lower bowl in the corner. I haven’t even got to see my seats yet, because I’m working in Albuquerque right now and missed the 1st pre-season game and most likely tonights game as well. I plan on attending all the regular season games, but do to traveling for work, I may have to miss one or two. If that’s the case I will probably offer them here first so I know they will be filled with Cards fans only. (If that’s legal CG)

We’ll also be expecting full reports and pics of the your game day experiences :-).

And don’t forget to mention ROTB while you’re out there.

If in SF or Oak...

If anyone ever cares to make the trip to the Bay Area to catch the Cardinals, I’ll hook you up with tickets, transportation, and lodging. Me casa es su casa.

Warning: Oakland is rough, wear a red jersey since the ketchup from tossed food stains the white jerseys! SF isn’t so bad, it’s just the three hour crawl to the Bay Bridge from Candlestick after the game that is murder.

That bad, huh?

Oakland would be ideal actually since my Grandmother lives in Berkeley. We don’t play them regular season for 2 more years though.

It’s pretty short notice, but if there was an extra ticket to Candlestick available for next weekend, I would trade strait across for a ticket to join me this season in Glendale. Pick any game except Buffalo, SF or Minnesota which are already been promised to others. Likewise I could supply an extra bed & transportation

by AJ BirdWatcher on Aug 29, 2008 1:40 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Poking around various outlets...

…makes it clear that the Cards are scheduled in Week 1 against the Niners to assure that there will be a high demand for tickets and those willing to sell them are asking a lot. Even the “buddy, of a buddy, of a buddy” that has season tickets is going so…no spare tickets. I’ll plan for this “next year” and see how many of the RotB faithful can make the trip to NoCal for a group venture to Candlestick.

Why do I bleed red?

When I was a kid growing up, I was always a big Bills and Greenbay fan. I rooted for the Packers because I loved Favre, and rooted for the Bills because they were playing the Cowboys every year in the Super Bowl. To be honest though, I didn’t even really get into football until high school. My dad was always into other things. I was subjected to hours of any kind of racing possible (Awesome Bill from Dawsonville). In high school, my buddy Joe was a huge Cardinals fan and I started following them then. I started playing ball myself junior year, and actually made quite a name for myself in the two years in HS. From that point it was all about College ball and I stopped following the NFL. After playing ball out in at a smaller school in Iowa on scholarship, I ended up coming back to Phoenix and playing on a traveling team. During that time, my head coach was good friends with the head coach of the Ottawa Renegades. He came down to see a guy we had on the team who was a phenomenal athlete with legitimate 4.2 speed, who was return specialist and Nickel DB. Well, Herby ended up getting called up to Canada and played two seasons with that team. However, the game that the coach sat through I ended up owning a former pro who was just tuning up before going back on the market after an injury. The coach loved what he saw but already had too many linemen under contract until the end of the current season. He told me to bulk up a bit and if I am still around next season they wanted to pull me up. Unfortunately, I never got the chance because of a debilitating genetic condition. Having to end my career prematurely and still a deep passion for the game, I moved on to follow the Cardinals incessantly. They are my team, and I love the direction they are going. I think they will be a force to be reckoned with for some time to come and I have never been this excited before a pro season.

that's a pretty awesome story

Sorry that you’re football dreams didn’t play out the way that they could have. Glad to have you as a Cardinals fan and member of ROTB though. It’s great to have someone who played the game for as long as you did in the group. What did you play on the line if you don’t mind me asking?

Insight bonus!

I designate Boogatt the o-line critic considering his resume. It’s too bad you didn’t get that chance in the CFL, it’s a fun league to watch having had the Sacramento Gold Miners in town for a few years.

fan since "01

I remember a friend watching espn with me one day and saying that team really sucks. When I looked up at the tv, it was the Cards getting scored on yet again on the highlight real. I told him that they didn’t suck and bet that they would win the superbowl the next year. I have always been a fan of the under dog and there was no other under dog as low as the Cards then. I started following them and haven’t looked back. It got even worse when I got deployed to Iraq. We had the AFN (armed forces network) which showed only certain games. Being 8 hours ahead there I would sometimes be the only one in the tent at 3am watching any game where I could see the Cards score flash across the screen. You wouldn’t believe the grief I got for that. I didn’t care. At the moment I realized I didn’t just like the Cards, I was a fan. When I got home a year later, I really started following the Cards. My wife still doesn’t understand it. But obviously you guys do. Thanks again for this site.

Football is a game...

and I new it wouldn’t last forever. There are a million other stories like mine so I don’t feel sorry for myself. I got a great life and great family. I bounced around from HS to college though. I played Guard and TE in HS, and in college I played LT and I backed up the punter to save a roster spot for the coach. Played a little LB and DL too after college.

back up punter?

Maybe the Cards could use you. They could sure use some help in that department.

Sounds like you’ve got experience everywhere in the front seven and offensive line. That’s good to know if we need some ‘reports from the trenches.’

No Idea

Im Irish, and discovered the wonderful world of football in 04 when I bought Madden.. and for some reason I always played as the Cards. Shortly after I followed the team into the depths of the Denny Green era.. and sit now at home in my fitz jersey. It probably helps that in Ireland no-one knows who the hell the Cards are

Plan to visit Arizona next year and get to a game..

I’m glad that the Cardinals caught your eye. How hard is it to get NFL merchandise and more importantly Cardinals gear over there (sorry if that’s a stupid American question but I’ve never been overseas)?

Sweet, Irish! I had heard that Madden had helped popularize the sport in Europe, probably even more so than NFL Europa. If you need some Cards gear, I’d be happy to hook you up in trade for some NFL Europa gear. Hell, you’re welcome to have my David Boston jersey! ::smirk:: Or Andre Wadsworth? Or Jake Plummer? Or Garrison Hearst? ::sob::

Impossible CG, sometimes you see someone in an NFL shirt buts its pretty rare. I had to order online for my Fitz jersey but even then it was tough for shipping. NFL Europa was a joke, why eat chicken when you can just watch the steak of the NFL?

Hawkwind.. I have no jersey other than my own college one to trade you, (#11 too) and I kind of need that for our 21 man roster we have. Although If I could have the choice, Jake the Snake would be amazing.

TiVo = Divinity

My wife is a Patriots fan (she’s from Massachusetts) and they annoyingly play far too often at the same time as the Cards. So I end up recording each game, put a piece a duct tape across the bottom of the TV to block CBS’s excessively large score scroll, watch one game until we catch up to current time, pause, go to the other game, watch it until caught up, switch, etc. We’re about half-way through the late game by the time we’re done, but it’s worth it to avoid all the commercials and half-time stuff.

Not to totally hijack this topic but….anyone have a recording of the Cards’ playoff game vs. the Cowboys in ‘98? Care to share? I still have the Pitt and Cin games from last year on TiVo for trade. E-mail me if you’re interested.

Tivo'd games

Since you’ve got some Tivo’d games, do you know how to transfer a Tivo’d game to the computer so that you can save it to your computer and email it? And do you Tivo every game?

by cgolden on Aug 29, 2008 12:31 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

TiVo every game, not necessarily keep them all.

My TiVo box is one of those DirecTV-specific ones so it doesn’t have the capabilities of a standard TiVo box (Wi-Fi, download to PC, etc). So I have to get creative if I want to pull shows off to the PC. The device has USB ports so there must be a way to access the hard drive. If I can, I will share the wealth with those that need a copy.

Hmmm, I’ve been looking for a way to get all the games so that I could re-watch them on the comp and cut them up to make highlight films for the site. I’ve grabbed everything so far from YouTube but there aren’t a lot of Cardinals fans out there uploading stuff to YouTube. I’d like to be able to post some highlights of each game throughout the week.

I'll keep you in the loop

I have a long holiday weekend with no definite plans, so I’ll see what I can do with what I have. I did get the Super Fan package this year that includes the condensed versions of the games for re-airing. That should be ripe for highlight culling. I’ll e-mail you if I can get something posted to YouTube.

If I hack my DirecTV TiVo...

…I could pull an unscrambled feed off the hard drive. Judging by some of the comments on the TiVo message boards, I as likely to ruin my TiVo as to get anything. Apparently the newest generation of DTiVo boxes are PC compatible so I will look into that today…that way Janet can have her craft shows on the old box and football on the new one. :P

SENSE OF HUMOR

My affinity for the Cardinals began when I was constantly confronted by fans of the two professional sports franchises who follow those teams in a perpetual humorless trance. Yes, mindless devotees the New York Yankees and the Green Bay Packers have no ability to find anything funny about their teams or the players on those teams.

For many years, I was the guy who would sit next to the moron all decked out in a green and gold #4 jersey and wonder out loud whether Bart Starr’s wife, Cherry (God, how I loved that name), was truly happy after leaving him for the left side of the current defensive line. When Mr. Green and Gold recoiled in horror, I would ask him if Paul Hornung was fulfilled now that he was no longer a woman trapped inside a man’s body.

I freely confess to torturing Yankee fans by feigning sadness about the precipitous mental decline of the Boss, George Steinbrenner. Of course, I would quickly add, after listening to the mindless drivel coming out of that man’s mouth for over thirty-five years, it would be a brave physician indeed who could actually diagnose dementia.

As I have matured, however, I felt compelled to make up for some of the unfortunate karma accrued in my earlier life. By saying I am an Arizona Cardinal fan, and I am an Arizona Cardinal fan, I offer myself up as an unflinching target for the slings and arrows of every chromosome-damaged Cowboy and Cub acolyte.

Go Cards and keep up the great work on this site!!!!

Great Topic

Here’s my story: I became a fan when the Cards moved to Arizona. I followed the NFL as a young kid, but since we lived in Phoenix I didn’t really have a team to follow.

During the Cards first season, I turned 11. My dad had season seats in the first row of the upper deck (North end zone). For my birthday I got a Stump Mitchell jersey (which I still have, but it probably only fits my wife). The birthday cake was a Cardinals cake with mini helmets on top.

From there I was hooked. The comeback against the 49ers that year solidified it for me. Watching everyone throw their cups at the end of that game is a scene I’ll never forget (I think they went to paper cups immediately after that game, which lasted for awhile).

Since then I’ve learned that my grandfather was a Chicago Cardinals fan back in the day. It’s nice to feel like we’ve had something of a family tradition of rooting for the Cards, even across the cities.

Exact same story

Growing up in Arizona is friggin great, but the only pro team we had were the Suns.
When the Cards moved, I decided then and there that they were my team (bye-bye Niners/Chargers). It also helped that I ended up going to a lot of games the first 2 seasons since my dad’s company had Loge seats. For some reason, they would always have extras for games that didn’t involve the Cowboys or Niners. Go figure.
When the Cards beat the Cowboys in the playoffs, in DALLAS!, I was living in Houston at the time and one of my friends was from St. Louis so he was a huge Cardinal fan. Needless to say, him and I making fun of Cowboy fans that day was spectacular, when we weren’t dumbfounded that the Cards actually won a playoff game. It almost made Buddy Ryan worth it, almost.

Cardinals Fan Epiphany

My Realisation that I was a Cards fan came in 1999 at Miami’s Pro Player Stadium.
I was a Dolphins fan since I started watching football back in Ireland during Marino’s first season. When I moved to Arizona in 92 – I adopted the Cards as my second team and went to as many games as possible (it wasn’t difficult to get tickets back then).
I always cheered the Cards on but would look out for the Dolphions scores on the stadium scoreboard.

So when I arrived in Miami to see my first Dolphins game in the flesh I was with a bunch of Cardinals fans that had made the trip from Phoenix and I was having fun ribbing them about getting beaten by “My” team. About half way through the first quarter I realised that I had been cheering every play by the team in Red and that I could really care less what Marino and Co. were doing. So I gave my Dolphins cap to the person sitting next to me and cheered My Cards the rest of the game. We lost 19-16 but ever since I have been a die hard Red Bird.

I have moved back to Ireland the last few years and just have to confine myself to watching on TV mostly but I did get over to see the new stadium last year for 2 games.
Hopefully the Cards can emulate my hurling team here in Ireland who have got to the All-Ireland final this year for the first time in 45 years.

Here is a link http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12949,00.html to the first 4 weeks of live football here on Sky Sports which is a premium sport chanel here.

The feed is the US feed with CBS or Fox or whoever is showing the game with in studio from Sky announcers. It is pretty good and hopefully if the Cards get off to a good start they will get scheduled more for the second month.

A Cardinal in Denmark

Well, being a Dane I didn’t grow up with football at all and there’s no natural team to root for. Two years ago one of my friends, a long time Rams fan, introduced me to the game and he thought it would be funny if I became a fan of one of the rival franchises. So he hyped the Cards calling them a young, promising, offensive team with a great future (he didn’t say a word about the past, though)

By the time I found out how little reason there were to start cheering for the Cards at the time and how much people would laugh at me, it was too late – I was hooked.

Most people overhere root for the most succesful team. There are a lot of 49’er fans among those who were young in the Montana/Young era, it’s crowded with Packers fans as we in the small Denmark tend to like teams from small places like Green Bay, and right now the teenagers are all Patriots. In a few years, however, when everyone starts loving the Cardinals being the defending champions I can say that I followed the Cards drafting fifth, too.

Go Cards!

Representing in Denmark

It’s great to hear from fans across the “pond”. I suspect there is a concentration of Cards fans in Amsterdam considering that’s where Kurt Warner played for a year in the World League/NLF Europe. There used to be a lot of Rams-Warner jerseys in the stands of Admiral home games. When Kurt joined the Cardinals, the following season there were still Rams jerseys in the crowd but a speckling of Cardinals jerseys too.

Enjoy the season!

Grew up in NorCal

during a time the Niners were shoved down your throat and the Raiders were in LA. There were two responses to the onslaught of Niners coverage. Reject them entirely or embrace them entirely. No middle ground. I rejected them.

When I got down to ASU in 1998 I lived right next door to Sun Devil Stadium on “New Row.” I embraced the Cards as a trainwreck you couldn’t help but watch over the next 4 years and have been diehard ever since.

Fan for many years

I moved to Arizona the same year the Cardinals moved there from St. Louis. I jumped on the bandwagon and have been a diehard fan ever since. I lived in the Washington DC area for several years and often went to the Cards/Skins games back when they were in the NFC East division. Skins’ fans are best known for being ‘jumpers’, when they win its great and when they lose they jump. I have never jumped. Thank God for NFL Sunday ticket, and my DVR. Life revolves around football. I now live in the Denver area and fly ‘home’ to Phoenix for two games each year. The new stadium is awesome! Sure beats sitting on those hot metal bleachers at ASU. I have a room decorated in my house with all my red birds, my husband finally said, can we at least get all the birds in one room instead of having them spread out through the whole house. I agreed, and that is now my room, my decorated haven. I proudly display my flag each week and wear my red and white. I never miss a game. Each year is a new year, a new start and I always hold out hope that maybe, just maybe this WILL be the year.
