TERRIBLE CAMP EXPERIENCE....DEATH OF A CARDS FAN!

As you read this article, keep in mind that Saturday was the Cardinal’s Fan Day. This past weekend I went to Cardinal’s training camp. For the past few seasons, I’ve always told myself that I would go to some teams training camp…but as a law student, time and money were LIMITED! So, needless to say, I was VERY excited to finally have an opportunity to experience my first training camp. As a reward for my recent struggles my girlfriend agreed to make the 2.5 hour hike to Flagstaff with me. On Tuesday and Wednesday of last week, I sat for the Arizona state bar exam and let me tell ya, every person who survives preparing for and actually taking that 12 hour beast deserves a treat. Tragically, my joy and excitement was VERY short lived. My camp experience quickly transformed into a bitter one.

I now understand why this franchise has such a minute fan base. A friend of mine went to Redskin’s camp this past weekend…there were nearly 20,000 people in attendance…Card’s at max had about 5,000. The "men" who comprise this team are the most disrespectful and downright disgusting individuals. How are they cocky and they’ve never made it to the playoffs?! I admit, I am not your average fan nor am I your average NFL blogger. BUT, despite my outward appearance I am (or shall I say used to be) a devote Cardinals fan. My passion, knowledge, and thirst for the game are unparallel. In terms of sheer football knowledge I possess more than the average man. So you shouldn’t let my appearance fool you. Funnily enough, a few of the pictures that I took this weekend captured the facial expressions of several players. In the photos that other fans took of me and my girlfriend you can clearly see players smirking and making faces at us in the backdrop. I can only imagine the denigrating or just plain mean remarks that were made. As a woman who’s been following this team for several years, who was THRILLED to finally get a chance to see her favorite players up close and personal, this experience was just plain hurtful.

First, Larry Fitzgerald is quite possibly the rudest person alive. I witnessed this "man" make a child cry by refusing to shake the little boy’s hand. Every other player took a second to give an occasional high five, thumbs up, or a head nod. Most players proffered some sign of acknowledgement to the children as they shouted their names….but oh no not Larry. He wouldn’t even look up. I was appalled! Doesn’t he know that if it wasn’t for these screaming and adoring kids there would be no mega pay day. The fans make the team so give the fans (at least the children) a simple head nod! Oh and we haven’t forgotten the paternity (abortion request) debacle…Larry could use some positive publicity!

Secondly, Antrell Rolle is the personification of disappointment. I went to camp primarily to interview Rolle about his transition from CB to S. It’s a move that many have suggested since he first left Miami. Rolle has long been a favorite Card for me. I think he has the potential to be a respectable talent if he gets his confidence back, focuses and puts in the time to learn the new position…after all nothing comes easy in the Not For Long (NFL) league. Additionally, I was curious about the support system that Adrian Wilson is providing Rolle. As one of the league’s best (and most underrated safeties) I think he will be a huge reason why Rolle succeeds. And finally, I wanted his take on rookie DRC. As you loyal AZ fans know, drafting DRC was a slight gamble…so after ten days of camp I wanted to know what a Vet, an actual AZ CB (former), thought about DRC’s progress. As you can see I was stoked for the opportunity, I just knew this man wouldn’t reject a five minute interview…ON FAN DAY! Boy, I was oh so wrong!

In an effort to get Rolle’s interview, I decided to approach a coach as opposed to just running up to Rolle. Momma didn’t raise no fool, I knew there would be an immediate presumption of impropriety. So, I opted to ask an older black coach, I erroneously assumed that as a minority himself he wouldn’t judge me! Well, we all know what happens when you assume…I was certainly made an ass out of. The man, Anthony Edwards, gave me lip service stating "sure, I will see what I can do…I’ll come find you and let you know." I saw this man at least two times after this dialogue and he wouldn’t even look in my direction. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to see Rolle after practice, as he and every other big named player ran immediately from the field to their dorms (please remember that Saturday was fan day, and a large percentage of the crowd drove great distances to see the players.) Naturally, I felt defeated. I had blown my opportunity for the interview that I was going to use to launch my new Cards blog site.

PUMP YOUR BREAKS FAN, all was not lost. As God would provide, I ran into Adrian Wilson at a local gas station right after practice. A glimmer, a slight iota of elation returned. Ordinarily, I would NOT have stopped Wilson, but I REALLY wanted Rolle’s interview. After debating it for about two minutes, I decided what the hell, to succeed you got to be thirsty! I introduced myself, stated my purpose, and gave Wilson my business card in hopes that he would pass it on to Rolle. I must say, Wilson is the MOST intimidating individual I’ve run across. He is HUGE, doesn’t crack and smile and is VERY dismissive. When I told Wilson that I too was an NC native, he just blew me off! I once again felt defeated. I knew that there was no shot in hell he would be passing that card along.

WELL, brace yourself readers! On Sunday night, around 10pm I get a phone call from a Miami number…I immediately think WTF is this about!!!! Could it be, NAWWWWW no way! Low and behold it was Antrell Rolle! I couldn’t believe it; I didn’t know what to say. Ironically, I got his phone call as I was preparing an in-depth research project concerning community needs in New Orleans for another former Cane (who I pray doesn’t also turn out to be a sexist male chauvinistic bastard.) Anway, I was F-L-O-O-R-E-D! As you can guess by now, my excitement was short lived! Within two minutes I would have my face cracked yet again! I presume Rolle either realized I wasn’t a groupie whore or he doesn’t like female fans. Either way, I’m without a Cards interview for the launch of my new Card’s blog.

I will admit, there was one lone player who took time after practice to sign every single autograph. He even agreed to take photos with me and my friend. I pray this young man stays humble and remembers his fans as he goes through the maturation process. Clearly his teammates have missed the essence of FAN DAY!

I have struggled, fought, grinded and straight busted my tail for the last four years trying to break into the sports profession. I attended a top undergraduate institution, continued straight to a top twenty law school and graduated at the age of 24. I immediately moved myself to Arizona, the up and coming "sports capital" of the US. I cannot begin to count the "informational interviews," volunteer programs, internships, cold calls and random emails, and degrading jobs that I have taken in order to break into sports. I understand that to succeed in this industry you must crawl before you can walk. Well, I’ve been crawling for 4 plus years and I’m still fighting on both hands and knees.

At each angle I’ve been shot down and pissed on, I’ve been told to tone down my image, advised to get a "beard", instructed to start with a white client as they would be more inclined to trust a black woman, and had David Falk himself tell me that he nor any of his clients would ever contemplate working with a black woman. I cannot help but wonder how much easier my plight would be if I were male or even a white female. Pam Oliver is the only black female face we see within sports, and that’s a darn shame! Oh and in case you are wondering why I didn’t just apply for a Cardinals press pass…well, I did…I went through Darren Urban and Mark Dalton both. And yep you guessed it, I was shot down.

In conclusion, I must admit that after the Rolle debacle I was a bit dejected. It was disrespect up close and personal. But, despite the ignorance of some, I want you (my supporters) to know that I’M NOT GIVING UP! God didn’t bring me this far to leave me. I will succeed within this industry and I will make my mark…the struggle continues! YES WE CAN, CHANGE IN 08!

Hi Rhonnie

I worked on the corporate partnerships side of sports for the past 7 years and I am now beginning my law schools apps. I am not sure what your goal in sports is whether it be as an agent, general counsel or marketer, but what I can say is don’t be surprised by the actions of most of the players. The majority of the players have been coddled their whole life and are largely jaded. However, at the end of the day they are all mid-20s males and act accordingly. Keep your head-up and get after it. It’s a tough biz to crack but once you do the industry is great. The biggest suggestion I can make is to not put them on a pedestel and treat them like you would any other individual at the same age.

also on the press pass

I’m not surprised at all that you got shot down for a press pass as a blogger. Very few organizations recognize this as a legit form of media, especially if you’re not affiliated with a major newspaper or of course the official team site. Just as an example the Dallas Mavericks banned all bloggers regardless of their affiliation from the locker room last season and that even included one of the Mavericks’ beat writers for the Dallas Morning News. I’m not sure that principle is going to change any time soon either. The fact is that anyone can start a blog on any topic and if a franchise granted press passes to every person claiming to be a blogger there’d be more media than fans in the stands. I wish there was some way around that because I’d love access to players and coaches but I don’t see it as a problem that’ll be fixed anytime soon.

Press Pass

I think my biggest irk with the press passes was that I recently ran across an interview with Rod Graves and he was ADAMANT about finding minorities to actually cover the Cardinals, I guess to expand their fan base. So within my correspondences with the team, I asked what efforts were being made to diversity the Card’s reporting staff…..SILENCE, no response on that issue.

I hate to play the sex and race card, I’m not typically one to do that but in this situation is SO blatant how could I not? Just turn on ESPN, NFL Network, Fox Sports AND tell me how many black women’s faces you see…black men sure (retired players) and plenty of blond haired white women. It’s terrible and it’s a shame. It’s 2008, some of these mentalities that we still share and support must fade.

Overall, the whole experience was such a let down and heart breaker! I’m a fan just like any of you other guys, I had such high expectations for camp. Finally, I can assure you if a player (whom you’ve followed for years) had the audacity to call you at 10pm (that was issue number 1 actually) and then completely shut you down because you aren’t some groupie, you would be RIDICULOUSLY offended.

Furthermore, which I didn’t include in the article….as I was getting DRC’s autograph, a black man who worked with the organization had the NERVES, to shove me and my girlfriend aside and say “ok thanks girls, let’s keep it moving.” I’m 25 and she is 26, no shot in sin that we look like children…I’m a lawyer and she’s a doctor…why did we deserve to be called “girls.” You might read that as being too sensitive, but I assure you that none of you would have been called boys.

To your point...

...of the “girls” comment. Really? Your offended by being called “girls?” You are girls, right? I would not have been offended if they called me a boy or guy. The Merriam-Webster definition of the term girl is “a single or married woman of any age.”

Also, one of the pioneers in women’s broadcasting is Robin Roberts who is both black and a female. I agree with you in your belief it is a harder road for females in the sports world, but it’s a tough road for anyone.

Oh, almost forgot...

...try to make an appointment with Nona Lee of the Diamondbacks. She is the GC of the team and is a black female from the OKC Law School. She used to be the Assistant Counsel of the Suns when I worked there and she is very nice and personable. You might be able to get some good insight from her.

Um, I seriously beg to differ. If your a grown man and you are content with being referred as a boy, I’m bewildered. In my 25 years of existence I’m trying to think of a moment when someone referred to by father as “boy” I simply don’t remember a time. Secondly, I DOUBT this man was familiar with the actual Webster’s definition. Thirdly, just as the words bit&, fag(&, and nig(*&^ are defined in the dictionary…I don’t think we go around using such terms, due to their inappropriateness. Now, while these terms are not on the same level as girl they do prove my point…JUST BECAUSE IT’S IN THE DICTIONARY DOESN’T MAKE IT RIGHT! Your argument is HORRENDOUSLY flawed!

Lastely, I AM VERY FAMILIAR WITH NONA LEE, she also proves my point of women in sports. If you read my article in it’s entirity you will see a notation that I’ve been told to tone down my image. Nona, is very fair in complexion, she has a VERY short boyish hair cut, and she only wear pants and button down tops. Very scant make-up. I’ve been to lunch with Nona twice quite actually…I’ve volunteered for the Woman in Sport’s association in which Nona is the president. So, please do believe I’m aware of all of this.

I once again implore you to read the entire post…I’ve grinded out the last few years to make advancement….I’m aware of the issues and the mentalities and no arguement you can provide will weaken the reality. It’s a complex and delicate issue that I have studied and written several research reports on. I’ve had countless interactions with working professionals and pro athletes…and I think anytime my breast size enters the discussion or my attractiveness then we have a HUGE problem. During an interview at Gallagher and Kennedy here in Phoenix, these two topics entered into the discussion.

Lastly, let’s not negate the fact that women, especially black women, are at the bottom of the totem poll in terms of sports. The last two major lawsuits involving sports teams have been brought by black women…the Knicks and now Nascar….you cannot negate this reality. It’s funny that when sex or race enter into the discussion every member of the majority jumps into defensive mood…sometimes we should accept reality as it is.

I apologize in advance if my post seems a bit harsh, no insult or rudeness intended. I’m just VERY passionate and VERY tired of everyone saying you will be fine. It’s not that easy of a situation….I have talents, skills, and the educational tools to make me successful, it makes no sense that people will not even give me a chance because of the “risk” associated with young black females within front offices. The two recent lawsuits will actually only make it more difficult. Nona is also got to be in her 40’s.

This is a event I did in law school (I post to show I have the capabilities)...I cannot tell you the hurdles that were faced trying to get sports professionals together. I have a funny story regarding the Wizards…I was essentially called a groupie to my face while I was requesting an athlete’s appearance….my “personal relationship” with Gilbert Arenas was questioned….which was weird because I don’t know the man. BUT, in all truthfulness, it was by another black female who worked in the community relations office.

I read the whole post

Please do not assume otherwise. The post sounded to me that you were denied player access because you were an uncredentialed blogger. Do you think you were the only one?

I sent a response to your post that basically said good luck and get after it. You respond with accusatory remarks and belittling comments. I extended a handshake and you responded rather immaturely. I am fully aware of the issues with NASCAR and the Knicks. I am so sorry those have affected you so dearly. I didn’t have any part of them. I tried giving you advice regarding Nona and you bite back at me saying you are “VERY FAMILIAR” with her. Well, good for you. I certainly wasn’t trying to be offensive by giving you a suggestion that may or may not benefit you.

Good for you on organizing an event while at GWU. I actually do know how hard it is to get professionals together for an event as I organized events at UofL, University of Ohio and Georgia Southern while I was a grad student at the University of Louisville.

I undesrstand you are from NC and the terms “boy” and “girl” are particularly sensitive in the South. Here in AZ? Not so much. You and your girlfriend were called “girls” because you are female. Nor would I equate the term “girl” to any of the three terms you listed. If you didn’t mean to equate them, then why would you list them?

I never negated the fact that the road was hard for females in the sports world. At no point was I ever defensive regarding this issue.

And sorry you are “VERY tired” or people telling you that you will be fine. Appreciate the fact that people are being supportive of you. The real world slaps everyone regardless of race, gender or class. Get used to it.

Thanks! God Bless and thanks for your remarks. Have fun this season, go Cards! Admittedly, my response was harsh, and I think I corrected that in my second post. Secondly, we just have to agree to disagree on the usage of girl…because I’m a female I become a girl..ok, that simply removes the racist undertone but simply promotes the sexist overtone! But, let’s agree to disagree ok boy! Actually, no I don’t even feel proper calling you a boy, that’s just inappropriate!

...promoted a sexist overtone? The term “girl?”

oh and as for your support, THANKS, seriously! I guess I misconstrued the regurgitation of the definition you provided as being condescending…coupled with the listing of black women who do work within in sports. Sorry, my sincerest apologies!

I didn't simply list

black females that have become successful. I mentioned Robin Roberts since you said black females are at the bottom of the totem pole. Nona I mentioned as a potential mentor for you. I don’t understand why you brought up the fact she had short hair and wore pant suits. If you are concerned with the perception of black females in the profession, then it doesn’t make sense to me why you are concerned with her appearance. Kind of hypocritical to me. Would you like me to forward your opinion of Nona to her?

You just seem like some self-entitled girl that stomps her feet when she doesn’t get her way. You are 25 and having a hard time breaking into an industry you damn well knew was hard for a woman to break into. Stop acting like a little twit and keep after it. This is a blog and both cg and I were supportive of you, if you can’t take this itty bitty bit of criticism then maybe it isn’t the industry for you.

....to lump cg in this comment. I was just remarking on those that have been supportive of you on this blog. Regrets to cg.
