Thursday Confessional: the "Other" Team(s)
Last week we looked into the origins of our fandom for the Arizona Cardinals. Through these revelations we have come to know the RotB community a little better and hopeful have developed a better appreciation for our fellow Redbird fanatics. This week, step into the cardinal's confessional booth and confess your gravest sin: what other NFL team(s) do/did you consider yourself a "fan" of?
First off, there is no shame in admitting that you may have been, or even still are, a fan of another NFL team. Being a fan of professional american football is bliss already; being a fan of the Arizona Cardinals deserves you sainthood. Still, there must be some other team that keeps your hopes alive to root for someone in the playoffs, considering the Cardinals dreadful history since 1948...
As I have already mentioned, I live in the Sacramento metro area, and have since 1973. Clearly it was all Niners and Raiders. Early on when I became cognizant of football, I was rooting for both teams. I just couldn't find Jim Hart on the tube regularly. It was really all that was on local TV aside from the Steelers and Cowboys. After the Traitors moved to LA, I was solely rooting for the Niners during the Walsh-era. Wershing. Ring. Cooper. Wright. Reynolds. Those were my heroes in those days since I could only read about the Cards in the boxscore of the local paper Monday morning. I kept rooting for the Niners but kept an eye on my other teams I wished the best for, namely the Cards (Oilers too, I loved Earl Campbell). It was during the time that the Niner-greats had to go to other teams (Lott to the Raiders/Jets, Montana to the Chiefs, Craig to the Raiders) to finish their careers I started to become bitter with the Niners. It was also around that time that the Cowboys started to own the Niners. It was also around that time that Eddie DeBartalo was stripped of his team and had to give it to his sister. Thus the York era of the Niners began. Jim Drukenmiller was drafted rather than Jake Plummer, even after Walsh told the ownership to draft the "next Montana". WTF?! When Plummer went to the Cards, I bought DirecTV and gave the finger to local telecasts and the Niners. I've never looked back.
Sadly, my "sin" continues still to this day. No, not the Niners. May they choke on giant donkey balls. :P I married a woman from Massachusetts. So aside from the constant Red Sox and Bruins headaches, I have to admit I've come to following the Patriots too. I have no choice gentlemen. You understand? Please?
If you care to add your confessions, do so, friends, so we may rid ourselves of our burdens. In such relief, our faith in the Cardinals will only grow stronger. Well, as long as we keep spiking this Kool-aid.
Peace.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Revenge of the Birds' (ROTB) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of ROTB's editors.

Good stuff Hawk
As I said in an earlier thread, I’m also Steelers fan. Growing up in the heart of Cowboys’ country, but hating the Boys, I picked two teams that Dallas fans loved to hate. Thus my affiliation with the Birds and Steelers. It comes in handy since we’re now known by some as the ‘Steelers of the West’ and I’m hardly ever torn between my two loves considering that they rarely play each other.

Bradshaw and Co.
This ties into AJ’s logic a bit, but it always seemed that the Steelers and Cowboys were in the Super Bowl. I couldn’t root for the ‘Boys, so I’d find myself rooting for Pittsburg…until Earl Campbell came into the league with the Oilers. The Oilers were the “other team” in Texas, all the more reason to root for them too.
With the advent of fantasy football and the focus on the individual abilities of specific players, has it made rooting for another team easier? Hold that thought…this could be next week’s “confessional”.

"Cleveland Rocks! Cleveland Rocks! Cleveland Rocks!"
I can empathize on that thought. It was tough, though, as I dislike the Giants, Redskins, and Eagles quite a bit too. I sure was rooting for the Giants against Dallas in last year’s playoffs! ::wonk, wonk, woooooonk::

I married a huge sports fan
And she is a homer from Gainesville and now we both live in Orlando, where I am from. She loves the Gators, I love the Hurricanes, but we both agreed (well she agreed and I said yes ma’am) to like the Bucs. Unless they play the Cards and all bets are off. Although we will be a house divided tomorrow when UF plays Miami.

Pewter vs. Orange Creme
The Bucs were always those sorry losers I felt sorry for, especially with their old uniforms. I thought the logo was pretty cool, it was just the team colours. Ugh. When they revealed the new uniforms I was stoked. Even the team became good. Coincidence? There seems to be a parallel between teams modifying/changing their uniforms and getting good. Bucs. Pats in the ’90’s. Jets going old school. Seahawks. Titans. Falcons.
Then there’s the Cards…bucking trends for 110 years now. ::sigh::

Didn't the Broncos win two in row with their new uni's too?

The epitome of new uniform, new success. I knew I was forgetting a few.

Hey CGolden
If you grew up in the very heart of Cowboy Country, then it must have been a long way from your double-wide to the entrance of the trailer park.
Credentials and residence requirements are hardly essential for participation in a sports blog, but it does strike me as a bit strange that so many of the frequent contributors to this one do not reside in Arizona. Does it occur to any of you that your franchise of choice gives rise to precious little zealotry among those who spend their daily lives in close proximity to the team?
Do you really think that by importing a bunch of people passed over as replacements for Bill Cowher that the Redbirds have somehow grafted a new culture of achievement onto an organization synonymous with failure? Buddy Ryan would be happy to tell you how he assembled his vaunted 46 defense in the wilds of the Sonoran Desert. “Steelers of the West”, indeed.
I will not label you a “homer” in light of your prediction of a 10 and 6 season. I, too, would like to believe that last season’s welcome mediocrity (Do you think your Steelers would welcome mediocrity?) was a result of real progress and not a direct product of an incredibly soft schedule. On the other hand, when you wonder in print about the Cardinals players involved in the final cuts and the manner in which they may fare with other teams, I do question your grip on reality. Do you believe that the Cardinals (old regimes or current regime) are considered as astute judges of talent by others in the NFL? While the Cardinals have improved depth in some areas and it is entirely proper to acknowledge those improvements, have they assembled such a rich stockpile of future Hall of Famers that other teams would grovel for their cast-offs?
As we approach the beginning of yet another season, I would welcome more material about the starting quarterback situation and the starting nose tackle merry-go-round. If my heroes are indeed committed to ushering in a new era, it causes me no small amount of concern that these issues appear very muddled so close to show time.
Like you, I am certainly no Cowboy fan. When I read about them in my local paper, however, I am immediately struck by the manner in which they “expect” Felix Jones, drafted long after DRC, to be an important part of the offensive scheme. The Cardinals brain trust, on the other hand, is so incredibly leery about its collective ability to evaluate talent that they “hope” their first-rounder will contribute in some nickel packages. If a franchise refuses to elevate expectations year after year, pretty soon there won’t be any expectations. And their veterans will want out during the term of their contracts or immediately after those contracts expire. And, well, you know the drill.

glad to hear your opinion
But how brave are you when you don’t even mention your own favorite team. We just discussed this a few weeks ago how long it would take some idiots to find this site and degrade it with their OPINIONS. We are Cards fans and that is it. Nothing you can say, no matter how eloquently presented, can change that. Hope this clears the air, NON BELIEVER. Oh, and just so you know, expectations are being elevated. And if you haven’t noticed, this is becoming a destination, not a final resting place for players. Look it up!!!

To be honest I'm not sure what to make of all of that
I’m guessing that some of it was meant as a joke, but I’ll address a couple of things.
- Why does it matter where a fan is from? I’ve been a Cardinals fan since I gained ‘football consciousness’ and where I reside has no barring on my level of fandom.
- I’m assuming that you’re talking about Buster Davis when you’re talking about us mentioning former players involved in cuts, is that correct? If so, why is talking about what system Buster Davis would be a good fit in, a reason to question my “grip on reality.” This isn’t the Associated Press or USA Today, it’s a blog and we’re nothing more than a group of fans talking amongst each other. No one said he was a future Pro Bowler or a future Hall of Famer, all we were doing was guessing at which defensive system would suit him the best. Sorry if that somehow offends you.
- You really want more stories about the QB situation? If you want to be beaten to death with “who’s the Cardinal’s QB” talk, I can send you about 5 links a day for your viewing pleasure. I think I’ve covered the position at least a couple of times a week since the start of camp and I’m not sure how much more I can beat a dead horse. I will say though, that if you’re, or anyone else, isn’t happy with the stories that I’m posting or you feel that I’m not covering something, you can post you’re own story as a FanPost. That is your platform to discuss anything regarding the team or the NFL.
- As far as DRC, I think it’s a completely different situation to compare him to Felix Jones or almost any other first round pick for that matter. First of all, RB is a position that’s much easier to learn that CB and DRC was drafted with the understanding that he would have to adjust to the speed of the NFL game b/c he came from Tennessee State. If you really want to compare him to a first round pick though, why don’t you look at any other corner drafted in the first round? Not a single one of them is projected to be a starter.
I would also ask what changed in your opinion of ROTB considering that six days ago you said:
Go Cards and keep up the great work on this site!!!!

I will not answer for CG but...
Does it occur to any of you that your franchise of choice gives rise to precious little zealotry among those who spend their daily lives in close proximity to the team?
I admit to some surprise at the low ratio of Cards fans in AZ here on RoTB. The fact that “local” zealotry is not dominating this site doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. There’s plenty of that to be had on azcentral.com’s message boards. There’s plenty to be had on azcardinals.com boards. I understand that this particular fan outlet is just getting itself going after an aborted first attempt. Give it time. I think that the most “zealous” are the bandwagon jumpers; they will come out of the woodwork when the Cardinals are successful. At this time, bandwagon jumpers will go with the old reliable teams (Cowboys, Steelers, 49ers, Raiders) so they don’t stick out as being “different”.
Do you really think that by importing a bunch of people passed over as replacements for Bill Cowher that the Redbirds have somehow grafted a new culture of achievement onto an organization synonymous with failure?
Any time a coach is sacked, the new staff is expected to bring in a new attitude and to change the “old culture”. That’s what they’re hired to accomplish and in the process win some games. Do we think the Pittsburgh “rejects” can do that? Of course. We thought the same of Dennis Green too. ::shrugs:: Does that make us “inferior” fans because our team is “synonymous with failure”? Only in the eyes of the insecure. I’m secure with my choices in life, are you SanAntone?
Do you believe that the Cardinals (old regimes or current regime) are considered as astute judges of talent by others in the NFL? While the Cardinals have improved depth in some areas and it is entirely proper to acknowledge those improvements, have they assembled such a rich stockpile of future Hall of Famers that other teams would grovel for their cast-offs?
I suspect that these are rhetorical questions as much of the post was, but I’ll attempt to answer anyways. Yes, I believe “others” in the NFL see the Cardinals as being “astute” judges of talent, certainly within the Rod Graves era. Recognizing that talent, drafting that talent, and then getting that talent to perform at the expected levels are completely different matters. “Grovel for their cast-offs” paints a cute picture, but isn’t reality in the NFL. Just ask Daunte Culpepper and Chris Simms. I do believe that the Cards have had to cut better players this year than any previous season in recent memory. And if you’d prefer to use a more realistic term, the Cards are well on their way to “stockpiling” Pro-Bowl-calibre players.
The Cardinals brain trust, on the other hand, is so incredibly leery about its collective ability to evaluate talent that they "hope" their first-rounder will contribute in some nickel packages. If a franchise refuses to elevate expectations year after year, pretty soon there won’t be any expectations.
If you really question the expectations of the Cardinals’ “brain trust” as being anything less than post-season any given year, then I don’t think I could explain it to you. Rogers-Cromartie is the first 1st round pick in a few years that wasn’t expected to start immediately because the Cardinals haven’t completely dumped that position in the off-season. There’s a few cornerbacks on the roster that can play in the NFL, perhaps not at Pro-Bowl level, but well enough to let the lad to learn the system and adjust to the speed of the game. The “brain trust” has high expectations of DRC and those will manifest as the year progresses.
Thank you for your counterpoint opinion.

My time on ROTB is limited...
Because Big Brother is shutting me down at work. They have slowly started to revoke privileges to access the site from my work computer. The man already took fantasy football from me and my brethren at work, where will it stop?
On another note, while I can still add my two cents, where did San Antone come from? I actually think this is a Hawkwind alter ego, AKA Chris Gaines, AKA Machiavelli, AKA San Antone trying to spice this website up a tad with his wannabe Hannibal Lector retorts (or maybe it was CG, hmm?). But seriously dude, I was born and raised in AZ and I have been a Cards fan since I really started following the NFL. I also know of three buddies I have turned on to ROTB that are daily frequenters and die hard Birds fans from Phoenix as well. I frequent another site "azcentral.com" where I can get dirt on the Cards, and I completely agree with CG when he referred to beating a dead horse on the QB controversy. All that is left of poor Seabiscuit is a smelly heap of intestines and hooves. If you want to find ROTB’s input on it, go lookup some archived articles. If you’re sad because you were a late arrival to the discussions, we’ll help you feel included and maybe give your two cents a look-see. ::stands up:: My name is Noah, I am a "homer" for the Cards, and I am not afraid to admit it.
Prediction: Cardinals 2008-2009 season 19-0
GO CARDS!

I certainly hope you could also pick up my sarcasm there too:-)
Did you miss the Tupac referance?
My bestfriend missed my Ray Finkle referance, “the laces were out” when I compared Rackers to Finkle. I have been guilty of thinking everyone has my same sense of humor.

Sarcasm I picked up on, Tupac no.
But I’ve been known to be pretty dense at times too. :P At least my wife keeps telling me that as she waves her Patriots gear in my face. ::sigh::

Shouldn't come home for lunch.....
Wow. Hevchev says that he is glad to hear my opinion and then calls me an idiot and a NON-BELIEVER. I would hate to read the gracious manner in which he receives opinions he is not glad to hear. I thought that excoriating non-believers was the exclusive franchise of Jim and Tammy Fay. How did you avoid the Kool-Aid at Jonestown?
Then Hawkwind asserts that he is “secure” with his choices in life and wonders if I am similarly satisfied. Every site needs a resident Dr. Phil. Please save your pop-psychology pronouncements for the next time you visit Britney in the squirrel cage. By the way, Hawkwind, I am thrilled you feel intellectually superior to those posting on AzCentral. Your recent Pewter vs. Orange Creme ruminations set new standards for prose style. Puh-leez.
In response to Boogatt66’s harried observations from his workplace, Emeril Lagasse himself couldn’t “spice up” this website.
So sorry to interrupt your tea party, ladies.
