New Blog: World Soccer Digest for Soccer Fans!

Greetings from BGN

Hello everyone, and greetings from Bleeding Green Nation (BGN).  I thought that I would come over here and start a thread for discussion regarding the Eagles and this week's game.  First, I'd like to use this thread for you guys to ask us any questions that you might have about the Eagles.  Obviously we know our team a bit better than the average fan from an opposing team, so use this space to clarify any questions you might have.  If you're wondering what some key matchups the Eagles might try to exploit (besides Westbrook) are, this would be a good place to ask.  Curious who might be the sleeper impact defensive player of the game to watch for the Birds?  Another good possibility.  I'm just throwing out some examples here.

Regardless of what any Cowboys fans might tell you, we're a pretty nice bunch of folks; for the most part.  There are always exceptions to the rule.  We may feel strongly about our opinions, but a great many of us will at least have some data to back it up.  I'm not sure if I'll always be the one answering questions (not that I'm the Eagles end-all-be-all anyway), but I'm sure some of my fellow BGNers will be more than happy to assist as well.  Good luck this week (just not too much) and I hope this thread works out well.

Fire away!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Revenge of the Birds' (ROTB) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of ROTB's editors.

Have to say that outside of Mcnabb and Westbrook I don't know a whole lot about the Eagles

Who is the most under rated (not well know but should be player) player on offense and defense?

I like DeSean Jackson...

when he’s not giving up his touchdown’s to celebratory fumbles on the half yard line, BONEHEAD! But seriously, he’s a stud.

Who would win in a fight, Whisenhunt or a Hurricane?

He'll be waiting on top on cover 2 help for Fitzy

We will not allow any deep stuff to Fitzy, Edge has better who up for you this week. We will not put 9 in the box. I expect 7 in the box, maybe 8 on short yardage stuff. Unless Boldin is out, than we may bring 8 men in the box.

I would say its Quinten Mikell and Sheldon Brown

The Eagles haven’t given much up in the air this year. Partially because the play of Quintn Mikell and Sheldon Brown. Granted, Brown has only 1 pick, but has been very good in coverage and has always been a solid tackler.

He plays a little tighter than Asante does, and some teams prefer to throw at Asante rather Brown. Since Asante sometimes plays off the receiver by a little.

Mikell has been our Defensive MVP this year, but I am sure you haven’t heard much about him. He is an undrafted free agent that has been around for years. He started as a Special team monster, then due to the departure of Michael Lewis combined with the bad play of Sean Considine, Mikell has proven to be a solid NFL starter and should have made the pro bowl. He was an AP all pro this year, but not a pro bowler.

I'm a big football/basketball fan. I know lots about your team as many others.

Since the trade suggestion between Anquan/Sheppard never materialized, what is his status for next season?

by hevchv on Jan 14, 2009 8:26 AM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Well, technically, he’s under contract with us… at a very reasonable price from our perspective…. He came into the season saying he was going to prove that he should be the starter, and hasn’t done so. Honestly, he’s been dethroned as our Nickle CB by Joselio Hanson for the better part of the season. Even when Samuel missed a game, it was Hanson that started; not Sheppard. Lito has been reduced to S/T duties and some light coverage.

Also, when he has gotten in games, he’s been beat like a readheaded stepchild. Teams are actually attacking him when he is on the field and it is paying dividends for them. If his goal was to show perspective trade teams that he could 1)stay healthy and 2)go back to a high performance CB, I think he’s failed. He is fairly mad, but he’s the one that signed the deal… and he can’t stay healthy as a starter. What did he expect?

I don’t know what to make of the situation. I know that the Eagles won’t simply cut him because he’s a great bargan at the price we have him at. And if the offseason was an indication, Andy will not trade him for less that what he thinks is a fair price. Will anyone meet Andy’s price? Due to Lito’s performance this season, I say no.

So, there’s really three scenarios.
1) Lito gets traded at what Andy thinks is a fair market price.
2) They tell Lito tough shit and he signed the contract; suit up or shut up
3) They do some kind of rework on his deal

Number 2 would be bad. That would lead to alot of bad blood, but again, our organization will stand up to players… see T.O., Corey Simon, Trotter (first time around), ect. So it wouldn’t exactly shock me. Number 1 is the best outcome, but I don’t see it happening… his value is too low, even for a nickle CB. The best scenario is that Andy sits down with him and says, “Look, we know you want a ton of money, over X amount of years, but we’re not going to do that… and neither will anyone else right now. Look at last offseason; no one was willing to give anything better than a 4th round pick for a two time Pro-Bowler? There are doubts. You need to prove to everyone else that you can still play to get that payday. We’ll restructure your deal to a one year deal with a bit of a raise… Come out, play hard, and you’ll be rewarded; either by us next year or someone else.”

Corey went from eating up offensive linemen

to eating up everything that resembled cheese. He wanted more money, the Eagles said no and released him. He signed a big fat contract with Indy in ’06 and ate his way out of football by April of this year.

I bleed green and I piss silver and blue

Cory was notorious for sitting out camp with contract issues. He would use his contract issues, just to rest up from camp. He always came in out of shape. He had some non-football related illness that surface in his stay with Indy. He think is currently out of football.

I don't think that Lito would be complaining about his contract any more. Maybe he just

shuts his mouth and stays with us. I don’t think he is a starter anymore. Can you say “Will James”. He has become a shadow of what he once was.

Lito is probrably untradeable now.

He is likely to get cut in my opinion.
Don’t get me wrong, he is still a good corner, but has struggled to get playing time this year. He is currently our 4th CB. The man used to be a pro bowler. Don’t get me wrong, at the time he was easily worth a 2nd rounder if not a low 1rst rounder. Now you’ll be lucky to get a 4th or 5th rounder for the guy. I never seen a player drop off soo fast in my life. Maybe he is not in the coaches graces any more. He hasn’t contributed much all year, its a sad, sad situation he is in.

DeSean is OK,

He doesn’t take over the game, nor has he been asked to do so. He is a solid contributer, and needs to have your defenses attention, for sure. Watch out for that reverse.

Good Question

I’d say, in my humble opinion, that Correll Buckhalter is the most underrated offensive player. He can do all the things Westbrook can (though not as well). And he’s a smart veteran who makes plays every time he touches the ball. Most of us wish he’d touch it more.

On defense, it’s hard to pick one person. Our DTs (Mike Patterson and Brodrick Bunkley) are both very underrated. Neither are Pro-Bowlers, but they are terrific at clogging running lines. Our linebackers are all young – most of us are high on MLB Stewart Bradley.

Buck is playing really good. Hope he gets some touches this week.

I hope we see Kyle Eckel getting like 10 attempts. That would mean that the game was over by the forth quarter. But that is just wishfull thinking.

I hope you aren’t black listed anymore Ajay.

Hmmm… I’ve got a few answers here for the O… I would say DeSean Jackson, but I think his rookie numbers and some timely dopeheaded plays (Dallas letting the ball go before the goalline) have drawn enough attention to him that most people have atleast heard his name. Also, if you’re a Cards fan in AZ, you probably have seen him play at Cal. I’m going to agree with ajay here and go with Buckhalter. Buckhalter was originally drafted to replace Duce Staley, but suffered major knee injuries three seasons in a row. I’m actually mildly surprised that he still has a career. Many teams would have bailed on him after the second injury. The emergence of Brian Westbrook allowed the Eagles to stick with him as kind of a side project, if you will. This has paid dividends over the past two seasons.

He is a very good sub for Westbrook in games that he has missed, especially this year. He played for Westbrook against Chicago and the first Washington game. For the two games his stats were 34 carries for 159 and 2 TDs and 7 receptions for 109 yards. That’s over 130 combined yards and 1 TD per game. Not too shabby. He is a little bigger than Westbrook and can break tackles a bit better. He is, still agile and has an icredible initial burst of speed. His presence in the passing game has evolved over the past season and a half. You also will see him in the backfield with Westbrook at some point. Usually what will happen is Westbrook will motion out wide or to the slot; pulling the defensive attention, and Buckhalter may get a carry up the middle or to the otherside of the formation. He’s a free agent this year and if the Eagles don’t resign him, he WILL be someone’s starting running back next year.

On the defensive side of the ball. I have one person that is underrated and one person that is not well known yet. The unknown person is Stewart Bradley. Honestly, he’s one of the top 3 or 4 MLBs in the NFL; no bias. This is his first year as a starter after seeing limited time last year. He has recorded 108 tackles, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, 1 int, and 6 passes defended. He is extremely quick sideline to sideline, but also fills for run support at the line well. You will see him playing in your backfield more than once per game. The one knock I have on him right now is his coverage flaws, but that comes with experience. I think the most underrated person on this defense (and maybe in the NFL) is Quintin Mikell, our SS. Before I get into my opinion of him, I’m going to draw a comparison to Adrian Wilson; and I mean no disrespect doing so. Mikell is in his 8th year out of Boise State. He played S/T alot and behind Sean Considine until about midway through last year, when Jim Johnson realized Considine couldn’t cover for beans. His stats this year, first as a starter, are 93 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, 3 ints, 2 sacks, and 9 passes defended. To put this in perspective, Adrian Wilson (2008 NFC ProBowl SS) has 75 tackles, 2 ffs, 2 ints, 2.5 sacks, and 5 passes defended. Mikell is an absolute beast in run support. In the Giants game, he stood up Chriss Snee (ProBowl RG) and stonewalled him to force a running play back into the backfield. He also hits extremely hard. He’s boardering on Brain Dawkins V2.0. Jim Johnson says the only way he can run his defense is having Dawkins and Mikell in the backfield.

Hope this helps.

Thank you foos05 for fielding questions

I’ve posted a parallel Q&A thread on BGN. If any RotB-folks care to chime in over there, feel free. Just keep it civil! For both teams to come this far is a testament to each team’s character and the devotion of their fans. Granted, Eagles fans likely outnumber Cardinals fans 10-to-1, but that doesn’t matter!

What are some significant injuries?

Im sure I could just glance at the injury report but id rather here from an Eagle fan.

by Andrew602 on Jan 13, 2009 10:32 AM MST reply actions   0 recs

Hmmm. Well that’s an interesting question. And unfortunately, I may not have the answer that clears the skies here, but cest la vie. As far as we know (Andy keeps alot under wraps) there were no major injuries in the Giants game and nothing really new for the past month or so. One thing that is brewing is the Shawn Andrews situation. He went down right after camp with a back injury and has been out since them. He was never IRed, and everyone wondered why… Well he’s back at practice. There’s an outside chance he’s back for the NFCCG, but he is a two time Pro-Bowler; and the best OL screen blocker in the league.

Umm, Avant had a knee injury against the Giants, and he’s been huge lately as McNabb’s sure-handed third down WR. Andy said that he’s moving around fine now, so that should be moot. Dan Klecko is nursing a shoulder injury I believe, but he went last game, so I don’t see why not this one as well.

Mikell and Asante Samuel spent some time out of the game Sunday with dehydration and a leg injury, but both returned and should be ready to go. The big question this year is how healthy is Westbrook. He missed a few games early and there’s been some games since that he just doesn’t look the same. He says he feels better than he has all year, but he’s not going to say otherwise. It’s kind of a mystery that I don’t think we get the answer to until after the season is over.

So to answer your question, there are no current significant new injuries, but then again, that’s just from what we know…

Hackneyed Question: Will McNabb be an Eagle next season?

He has a pretty high cap number for next season. Do the Eagles sign him to an extension or walk away?

Personally, the Eagles would be stupid (not as in “a tie is in the rules” stupid, but drafting Tommy Knight 1st overall stupid) to not keep McNabb until he wants to retire. Screw going home to Chicago.

We all leave footprints in the sands of time, just watch out for the discarded fish hooks!

by Hawkwind on Jan 13, 2009 10:36 AM MST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah I was waiting for this one. Short answer, Yes.

Long answer. McNabb has taken the bulk of the criticism (only surpassed by Andy Reid) over the past 5 years or so. Ever since the 2005 season when he started to get injured every year, the season end has brought rumblings of a McNabb departure, but it never happens. It’s so stupid. The vocal minority of fans and MSMers in Philly are McNabb haters and once the seed got planted, it blossomed, and continues to do so year after year. Last year he proved he could stay healthy. This year he’s poven that he can return to form. This is one of his best statistical years, ever. When the Ravens game and Cincinati debacle occured, I thought there was a 10, perhaps 15 chance that he got dealt in the offseason if the team continued on that path… Well here we are now, and I’m 100% certain that he will return next year; probably with a restructed contract.

yes, Unless he throws like 6 picks, fumbles 3 times and goes 1-99 for 1 yard.

However I must admit, this run probrably secured his run in Philly. He was just about done after Baltimore. But, ironically his performance against Arizona saved his run in Philly and Ironically our season as a whole.
