Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

The week of weeks.

They say that a watched pot never boils, but time flies when you're having fun.  Well I've got a new one for you...

Reading sports blogs makes a week take longer.

Yeah, I'm no poet and I can't think up something that rhymes or is witty but you get my meaning.  At this point I'm mostly lurking in the blogs with mostly nothing to say.  In fact, as an Eagles fan, there's really only so much that I can read that hasn't a) already been said, or b) is just conjecture on the upcoming event.  I just can't take it anymore, it's wednesday and this week is dragging on.

What's also interesting is that while "everyone" is saying that Eagles will win this game, if you do any digging at all you'll find that it's a pretty even split between reporters who say the Cardinals will win or that the Eagles will win.  I know that the Cards want to play this underdog card, but probably in the minds of the players it's not really there.  It's a media driven fabrication.  Even on ESPN you can find people that swing both ways...

Ha.

Anyway, onto my initial point.  At what time do you say to yourself, "I'm completely full of the spin and they hype and the story-lines and it's time to get up from the table completely."  At what time do you say that you can't eat another bite and just want to sit back and relax, and wait for the game which will inevitably be here...

...Heck, I've got dental work to get done on Monday and I can't wait for this week to finish...and I hate the dentist.

For the Eagles-Cardinals game, in your honest opinion do you think...
the story-lines/media/spin/hype will affect the Eagles

the story-lines/media/spin/hype will affect the Cardinals

the story-lines/media/spin/hype will affect both teams equally

the story-lines/media/spin/hype are a non-factor and generated by fans and media types to bring more significance to a game which already is significant.

Fifth NFC Championship game in the past decade, this must be routine for Eagles fans

For Cardinals fans, this is anything but “routine”. We certainly would rather it be Sunday already, but all the Cardinals-related information/stories/discussion is interesting to read/write as well. Hell, this is a season’s worth of “face-time” in a week by typical Cardinals’ standards.

The “us against the world” motivation tool is pretty hackneyed. The Patriots tried to play that angle last year; after going 18-0, everyone had heaps of respect for them so playing that motivation cards was pretty weak. For a Cardinals team that most NFL fans loves to ridecule (well deserved for the most part over 30+ years), the “no respect” card works legitimately this time. If they make the post-season next year, not so much. If they play in a fifth NFC Championship game in the next ten years, the “no respect” angle is laughable.

I’ve heard on local (Sacramento, CA) radio and even on XM/Sirius comments that if the Cardinals make it the the “Big Game”, people wouldn’t watch the game. “Cardinals? Super Bowl? That’s not my Super Bowl”. So here’s a piece of pure conjecture to ponder: think the NFL would prefer better SB ratings out of the Eagles-Steelers, or be okay with a Ravens-Cardinals match-up? What do you think the advertisers would prefer to see in the current economic environment? Tampa tourist authority? Hotels full of Steelers and Eagles fans or a big unknown of “are there enough Cardinals fans to fill the Motel 6 by the airport?”.

We all leave footprints in the sands of time, just watch out for the discarded fish hooks!

Fifth NFC Championship game in the past eight years

/fixed :-)

Having said that…. For us, the only routine thing about this is getting to this point and being the favorite to move onto the Super Bowl only to have it blow up in our faces. I’m farily certain that out of 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004, the only time we weren’t the favorite in the NFCCG was 2001… against Kurt Warner and the Rams. That game we came out with our hair on fire and we into the locker room with the lead, only to see it evaporate and our dreams crushed. But there was a sense of, “Hey, no one expected us to be here! This is the start of something special! We’ll get ’em next year!” And you know what? We did.

2002 came and brought with it a sense of entitlemet… We belonged! We were a team to worry about. Then we got back to the NFCCG easily and laid an egg. Now it was, “Geez. Didn’t see that one coming, but we’re gonna be back next year! Woo hoo! Next year is the year!” And the record played again… Another trip to the NFCCG, and another defensive back crushing our spirits. Fuck you Ronde Barber… Fuck you. At that point, my feeling was, “Jesus Christ. Not again. Fuck.” Then 2004 came, and the fans demanded change! Now! And we got it, in the form of T.O. We breezed through the regular season and Roy “Horse Collar” Williams broke Owen’s ankle in the waining games… but we moved through the playoffs easily without him… This time, we laid a whoopin on the Falcons (who didn’t deserve to be there), and finally made it to the Super Bowl! We rejoiced! It was finally our year! Nothing can stop us now! DAMN IT!!!!! Then it was, “You know, we’re only gonna get so many shots at this. Why can’t we just win one!”

Since then, McNabb has been a permanent walking wounded and we’ve had suspect play coming from all over the field. We’ve cobbled together some pisspoor seasons and one magic run with Jeff Garcia at the helm for the remainder of 2006 to ride into the playoffs. Our defense has been overhauled at almost every position over the past three years and we’ve added alot on offense as well. There are only a select few members of the 2004 team that remain. And ever since that year, the feeling has been, “My God, did we miss our opportunity?”

Trust me when I say that this is anything but routine at this point. We’ve learned our lessons the hard way… Don’t look past anyone. Don’t expect to have the same shot every year. You need to take advantage of your opportunities when they’re presented. I can only imagine what a life long Cards fan has been through with so many poor seasons, but trust me when I say, we’ve felt alot of heartache the past 8 years as well. If anything, our past has taught us not to take things lightly; and to seize the day. Honestly, this is the first time that I feel the team as a whole has this mindset… 5 years ago, I think they thought they would get back to this game every year for the next 10 seasons. So I’m hoping they remember what it’s like to loose this game repeatedly, and play like it’s their last opportunity.

Just my opinion

"I tried to run him over but Eli had his big boy pads on and he kind of stopped me from getting in the end zone. The next time I’ll try to jump over his head.’’ - Asante Samuel

OK, Foos05, I like your stuff...

but I’m sorry to say there is only enough room for one residential longwinded blogger in this forum and unfortunately that position has already been filled by Hawk, so we are going to have to ask you to wrap…!

Just kidding Hawk and Foos05, I like your shit.

That does have to be really frustrating though dealing with that year in and year out for almost 10 years. At least with the Cardinals being perennial losers we knew what to expect.

Who would win in a fight, Whisenhunt or a Hurricane?
Hold on, hold on, what if the Hurricanes name was Whisenhunt?
Daaaaaaaaaa Cards, Da Cards Da Cards Da Cards Da Cards!!!

45 minutes away from Tampa and when we make it, I will do my best to get tickets, within reason.

To start the season I heard Chris Carter say that Coughlin somehow convinced his team that they lost the Superbowl and to watch how strong they would start. Well he was right. They started very well. If Whiz can somehow convince the Cards that they have already lost the SB maybe we can get that type of production this week. I want to go to my first SB. Now accepting donations for tickets. Sorry, had to throw that in there.
