Ask FieldGulls about this Sunday's SEA v. ARI matchup

Hey Cardinals fans, I'm making a fanpost for you guys to ask any questions you may have of us Hawks fans about this Sunday's game. This game should be a pivotal game for the division (especially if those pesky 49ers don't go away) and it looks like we have the early makings of a great 3 way division race (sorry STL fans). So go ahead and ask any questions you have about the Seahawks, and I (along with other FG posters) will do our best to give you good answers.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Revenge of the Birds' (ROTB) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of ROTB's editors.

It would be nice to see this division get tougher with the Seahawks, 49ers, and Cardinals playing well.

How long do you think it will be until Hasselbeck is fully healed?

Hasselbeck

I’m not sure what the exact timetable is on Hasselbeck’s full recovery, but he’s fully participated in practice since the Jaguars game. I’d guess he’ll be fully healed after the bye-week and relieved of most discomfort by then unless he aggravates it somehow.

A few questions

How has Edgerrin James looked so far?

Adrian Wilson has a history blitzing Hasselbeck. Are you worried he may reinjure Hasselbecks ribs if he were to blitz him?

How has Aaron Curry looked so far this year?

Has Housh met your expectations so far?

Are there any new looks we might see from the Seahawks that we haven’t seen from them in the past?

What is your biggest area of concern on the Seahawks?

Thanks guys

Hey, hey, hey hey hey, watch the language, ok? I have a family.

How has Edgerrin James looked so far?

Exactly what you’d expect for a RB his age. Nothing flashy, but somewhat dependable. Seattle hasn’t played him much, and likely won’t play him much throughout the season barring injuries.

Adrian Wilson has a history blitzing Hasselbeck. Are you worried he may reinjure Hasselbecks ribs if he were to blitz him?

Of course. Considering it’s a rib injury, any kind of hit is going to hurt. He doesn’t need to re-injure the rib, he just needs to hit him hard enough to cause a lot of pain. Hasselbeck doesn’t have a history of playing well while injured/in pain.

How has Aaron Curry looked so far this year?

Good. He is so fast getting around the edge, it’s ridiculous. When he’s got a few years under his belt, opposing RBs are going to be looking behind themselves more than looking forward when playing us. That, and he really hits hard.

Has Housh met your expectations so far?

From a pure statistical point of view: no; but it isn’t really a fault of his. Two of the five games we’ve played thus far were with Seneca, who has 0 repiore with Housh. From a relative “make the team better” standpoint, absolutely. He really has delivered as the reliable 3rd down conversion man. He has made our ability to sustain drives so much better, it’s quite shocking actually.

Also, a lot of people have ragged on him a bit lately for making diva-like comments, but I like it a little. He’s giving the team a little attitude, a little swagger, that it has missed.

Are there any new looks we might see from the Seahawks that we haven’t seen from them in the past?

I think you’ll see some unusual blitzes and coverage packages. You’ll see DEs drop into coverages and an OLB rush around an “empty” LT so to speak. Bradley has thrown some interesting looks this year, and from a Seahawk fan standpoint, it’s so exciting to see the vanilla playbook in the trash.

What is your biggest area of concern on the Seahawks?

Getting healthy. We’re struggling more than we should because we’re missing key guys on offense and defense. I’m worried that once healthy, the team will take too long to “click” as a group with everyone finally back in place, so to speak.

That and the o-line. They’ve struggled with the new zone blocking scheme. This could be mostly in part because there have been 10+ o-line combinations in 5 games, probably because we’ve had so many injuries. They need to gel and start playing more consistently if we want our running game to be even average.

The demise of the Broncos in '09 is our future. Pray hard.

Someone else feel free to respond as well.
How has Edgerrin James looked so far?

He has looked ok. He really hasn’t played much until this past week’s Jags game, and we mainly used him because he’s supposedly a non-fumbler who doesn’t lose yards. Julius Jones is more explosive, and Forsett seems to have a lot of fight in him (hard to tackle and won’t go down), so out of our three RBs, I’d honestly say that he’s the one I’d least like to see, especially since both Jones and Forsett are decent pass blockers and can catch out of the backfield.

Adrian Wilson has a history blitzing Hasselbeck. Are you worried he may reinjure Hasselbecks ribs if he were to blitz him?

I’m worried anytime Hasselbeck gets hit or anytime he scrambles. That injury by Patrick Willis looks like a freak accident though, just hit the wrong spot. It doesn’t help that we’re on our 4th string LT (who sprained his MCL in last week’s game) and our 3rd string LG (who was our 3rd string center to start out the season).

How has Aaron Curry looked so far this year?

For the first several games Aaron Curry looked like a rookie with enormous potential. He would overpursue on one play or get juked out of shoes on an open field tackle, but then he’d explode and just blow a guy up. He seems to have made leaps and bounds in his awareness on where to be, and on the season he has 2 sacks both of which have caused fumbles. His coverage skills also seem to be as good as advertised. I was personally not very enthusiastic about picking a LB with the 4th overall pick, but he certainly is proving his ‘safest most NFL-ready’ label.

Has Housh met your expectations so far?

His stats aren’t eye-popping, but yes. Hasselbeck was a bit rusty in the first game, then he got injured, and Seneca Wallace isn’t the world’s best throwing QB when it comes to passes over 10 yards (or over the middle). He has a competitive fire, great hands, and is a great route runner. Hasselbeck is usually a equal opportunity distributor anyways. He’s pretty much the anti-Jake Delhomme in that regard. One thing of note, Housh had a costly fumble when we played Chicago, but I think it was because he hurt his hand on the previous play or drive, so at the least you can say it was because he wanted to stay in the game (both good and bad).

Are there any new looks we might see from the Seahawks that we haven’t seen from them in the past?

Brian Russell is no longer here, but Jordan Babineaux isn’t exactly Ed Reed. He (along with everyone else) was out of place on both of Gore’s 70+ yard runs. Also n defense, we had LoJack last year, but he was a rookie and couldn’t do anything right. This year he looks to be doing a much better job at getting to the QB with (4 sacks I believe), as is Darryl Tapp (who is a beast!). Tapp is a RFA this year, but I’m afraid some team that runs a 3-4 will want him to play LB because he is not as big as your typical DE, and he has made some great down field tackles, as well as doing a good job of disrupting the pocket for the opposing QB.

What is your biggest area of concern on the Seahawks?

Besides injuries to our O-line and Hasselbeck, I would say the running game. I thought I would say our defense, but they’ve done a pretty good job (except against Peyton Manning, but can you blame them?) Combined with your run defense, I’m not sure if our running game will even factor, but hopefully we get good Hasselbeck (sometimes he lacks any zip on his throws, and seems to take two seconds too long to decide to pass), and it won’t matter much. The SF game was a bit of a disaster for our defense as well but we had Tatupu hobbled for a half before pulling himself out, our best DT Mebane out for the entire game, our OLB Hill out (he’s out until the bye), and our top CB (Trufant, PUPed at the beginning of the year, best case scenario is back after the bye) and our nickelback (Josh Wilson who’s starting because Trufant is out)

Additional notes

Re: Edge: I’d say Edge fulfils what we brought him in for; grinding out reliable yards. I do disagree slightly with LantermanC on one thing: I’d say Edge is a clearly superior pass blocker than JJ, and definitely more than Forsett. With a decimated line, the pass blocking quality of our RBs and TEs becomes that much more important.

Re: big rushes: while our safeties certainly earned no points there, it should be noted that – unlike what the pundits write – those long runs did not so much show a structural weakness in Seahawks run defense as they did the value of Mebane in run d.

Re: biggest concern: if we’re talking this game, it has to be O-Line. I think Seahawks fans might have got a bit too much swagger in our shoes due to how weak the Jax D looked against us, but a significant pass rush will make our O that much weaker. And this is a simple, cold fact: our O-line did not take the Jax pass rush away, the Jax pass rush took the Jax pass rush away. Even a halfway competent pass rush will be a nightmare for our patched-up O-line, and in turn significantly hamper Hasselbeck’s performance.

If ’Zona gets a pass rush going from the first down, this might be a blowout in the other direction. The same is obviously true in the other direction, as Warner is similar to Hasselbeck in getting flustered by consistent pressure. And neither team has much hope of starting up a good running game.

I agree that Edge is a superior pass blocker.

But I think Jones is pretty good as well, certainly above average. And Forsett, even though he’s a little guy, I would call average as well.

Agreed with the pass rush analysis. Our o-line is decimated, and JAX has the worst pass rush in the league. This week Hawks fans will see if it’s adequate despite injury or if a decent pass rush makes the wheels fall off.

Can we get John Carlson from you before the trading deadline?

we will give you Jerheme Urban, Ralph Brown, Anthony Becht, and a 6th round pick………

think about it

by CardsDefense on Oct 16, 2009 4:58 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Maybe

but you might have to switch Urban with Q, Brown with DRC and the 6th for a 1st. And you still might have a lot of Hawk fans feeling ripped off.

How 'bout Kelly Jennings?

He really likes the desert!

by Renman on Oct 17, 2009 7:03 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

He's playing nickel CB. I'm fine with him covering Breaston.

He can get killed by tall receivers, of which Breaston is not.
