Stick a Fork in the Seattle Seahawks

If yesterday proved one thing to me it wasn't that the Arizona Cardinals are capable of playing a nearly perfect game and dominating an opponent. I watched the playoffs last year so I know what this team is capable of doing in a given week when they bring their A-game. What this game proved to me is that the Seattle Seahawks of 2009 and the foreseeable future are not the same team that dominated the NFC West four of the past five seasons. The Seahawks are an old, broken down, shadow of their former selves. The NFL, like most things in life, is a cyclical system right now we're watching the downward spiral of the Hawks. Over the next five years or so we should witness the complete rebuild of this team and I for one, can't wait to see them suffer.

Star-divide

Take a look at everything they have to replace:
  • Quarterback: Bad-beck is obviously done and his value to the organization at this point is just to mentor whoever they draft next year or the year after.
  • Running Back: There's no way around it, the Hawks backfield is terrible. Julius Jones isn't too old but he's proven many times that he's not a starter in the this league.
  • Wide Receiver: T.J. Houshmandzadeh hasn't been a terrible signing at wide receiver but many questioned why an old team would sign on old WR. He's 32 years old and Nate Burleson and Deion Branch have been inconsistent threats when they're actually healthy.
  • Offensive Line: At the very least the Hawks need a left tackle. The right side of their line and center are fairly young but left tackle might be their biggest need heading into this year's draft.
  • Defensive End: Patrick Kerney is still a force on the outside when he's healthy but yesterday's game was a microcosm of what his game has become. He's capable of killing a quarterback and then limping off the field on the very next play. At 32 years old and a growing history of injuries it's time to look for his replacement.
  • Secondary: With so many other needs the Hawks might push this to the back burner and hope that some of their young guys pan out but without Marcus Trufant playing at his 2007 level this is a poor group of spares.

Even the linebacker corps, which was easily the strongest group heading into the season, looks like a shell of it's former self now. Leroy Hill, who received a big contract in the offseason, has only played in one game and their middle linebacker and defensive leader, Lofa Tatupa, is gone for the season now. To make a long story short, the Seahawks have already been falling and they might be starting their free fall right now.

The Hawks enter the bye week at 2-4 but with road games against the Cowboys, us and the Vikings in the next four games (with a home game against the Lions sandwiched in between) the Hawks could be staring a 3-7 record right in the face. The rest of their schedule is pretty manageable (@STL, SF, @HOU, TB, @GB, TEN) but even with several winnable games left it might be an accomplishment just to avoid double digit losses.

Either way, their time in the sun is over. It's the Cardinals time now!!

Well written, though obviously biased post

In all reality, the Seahawks are simply a healthy O-line away from being a team that could content for the NFC West title. And I don’t mean a new O-line, I mean a healthy O-line.

I find it hard to believe that any team in the NFL could be without 3 starting lineman and still have a productive offense.

The stark difference between the game vs. the Cardinals and the prior weeks’ game versus the Jaguars was the pass rush. When Hasselbeck is protected (like he was during the Jaguars game), he’s very much capable of leading numerous long, effective drives to scores. When he’s not protected, he’s unable to be effective as the Cardinals very effectively showed.

While I do agree with many of your points (Kerney’s is old and overpaid, below average RBs, weak secondary), I don’t think it’s as bad as you think.

After this bye week, we’ll improve at multiple positions: secondary will improve with Trufant, linebackers will improve with the return of Leroy Hill and Hawthorne stepping into Lofa’s place (he did VERY well in week 3 vs. the Bears). That and we’ll have our multiple O-lineman back from injury.

By no means do I think the Seahawks will overcome adversity and suddenly start winning enough games to with the NFC West this year … I think that boat has sailed. However I do feel they’re closer to a contender than they are a rebuilding team.

P.S. Congrats on the win this week.

The demise of the Broncos in '09 is our future. Pray hard.

Is a healthy OL really possible though

Sure if Walter Jones returns to his 2006 or 2007 form then maybe they’ll be alright but he’s closer to retirement than ever playing the role of an above average offensive tackle again. At the very least the Hawks will have to look at an LT in this year’s draft. They can’t wait around another year for Jones.

And even if they do find a quality LT before next season, how much longer can they wait before finding Hasselbeck’s replacement? At some point they’ll have to address the RB position as well.

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

The Jaguars

They have no pass rush. They couldn’t sack Warner and nearly gave the Rams their first win in Jacksonville. I wouldn’t base anything off beating a weak Jagaurs team. We did and got spanked by the Colts the next week.

On another note, the Seahawks have youth they can build on, Curry, Carlson, Wilson, but do need to draft smart the next few years. They’re on the brink of a rebuilding year.

For the most part I agree.

Matt Hasselbeck can still play when given time in the pocket. When he gets raddled like yesterday, he becomes a completely different QB which a lot of QB’s are like. I do think that they have to start thinking about drafting a QB in next years draft to get someone to learn under Matt, I am a believer in the lets have the future QB sit and learn for two or three years. With them having two draft picks next year, one from Denver. If I were the hawks I would look into finding a replacement for the aging LT Walter Jones and possibly go after QB Jake Locker, looks like he could be a stud QB in the NFL, or QB Colt McCoy.

Not done quite yet

I think it’s a little premature to “stick a fork in the Seahawks”. They will be getting some guys back after the bye week and it’s not like Dallas is a powerhouse this year. If they can get by Dallas and the Lions, they could be sharing a 3-way tie for first place with the Cards and Niners in just a few short weeks.

Cards have to play at Giants, then Panthers (which should be a win, but not an easy one), and then at Chicago. They could easily lose 2 of those 3. The Niners have to play at Houston, who is looking pretty good lately, and at Indy which is definitely one for the L column. They get a home game against the Titans, but the Titans have to win at some point, don’t they? I see the Niners losing at least 2 of those 3 as well.

All these teams could be easily locked up at 4-4 going into week 10 and guess who the Cards get to face? If the Seahawks lose that game, then I’ll put a fork in them.

I don't see the Carolina game being close.

Agreed

Key to beating Carolina is to just take the run game away from them, Something the Cards have been able to do all season.

Yeah, I am lloking forward to seeing

if the D can stop both Williams and Stewart. It would be sweet.

Delhome has to still have noghtmares about that playoff loss as well.

Welcome to ROTB

I also think we should be able to win against Carolina by a big margin. Sure they will be coming in with a chip on their shoulder for what we did to them in the playoffs but they have too many problems to use that chip. Their defensive star in Julius Peppers won’t play hard, which is a big blow. Delhomme has shown he can’t be trusted with the ball in his hand. Steve Smith does not even have a TD this season. The only thing they have been good at this year is running the ball and if the Cardinals control that, like they have all season, than I think we win that game in a blowout.

I think you're being a little too optimistic

That’s like me saying “Yeah if the Cardinals win out the season and the rest of the NFC West loses we’ll make the playoffs.” Teams win and lose games that you’d never expect. The Lions could beat the Seahawks. That goes for beating the Cardinals and 49ers too. We have a tough stretch ahead but looking at the teams we face, the Giants haven’t faced anybody good but the Saints(Redskins, Raiders, Chiefs, Cowboys), who killed them. The Panthers have too many problems, mainly at quarterback. And what will the Bears do to beat us? They don’t have a threat at receiver, which has been a weakness for our D. Realistically, the Cardinals will struggle the next three weeks, and if we can we at least two games I’d call it a success.

Their receivers aren't great

But Cutler has done a good job getting the ball to them. They look a lot better than they did with Orton and Grossman throwing the ball to them.

The Bears will have to throw the ball to win the game, and considering how bad their O-Line is right now and how Forte was only able to run against the Lions [Cutler had almost as many yards running the ball as both of their running backs combined on Sunday] I think it is a winnable game.
