Name Your Pick from the Carolina Panthers
Last week, over at Big Blue View, they had an interesting piece asking the community which Arizona Cardinals they would like. It put an interesting perspective on our team, and it really shows that the grass is always greener on the other side. I liked the idea and now bring it to ROTB to discuss. I won't count out any Panthers that you can't take, so it will be interesting if I hear the name Steve Smith. It's pretty simple - which Carolina Panthers would you like to have on the Arizona Cardinals? I'll name a few:
To Panther fans - I'm not the most knowledgable person when it comes to the Panthers, so if I sound out of my mind just let me know.
Julius Peppers DE: Yeah I said it. Peppers may be having a "down year" in terms of what we're used to but he's still one of the best pass rushers in the league. It wasn't long ago that he was putting up 14.5 or 13 sack years and he has 76.5 in his career. The good thing - he's only 29. He's said he'd like to play standing up more and wanted to play for a 3-4 defense, which is what we run here.
Jeff Otah OT: This seems like an easy pick if you ask me. With the recent struggles of Levi Brown not living up to his 1st round pick status, an upgrade over him would be vastly appreciated. Otah is only in his second year but he's already been a solid contributor on the line and hasn't missed a game. He's kept Delhomme safe, and has also helped open up holes for their duo of running backs.
Jon Beason LB: Another young player in Beason, would have a huge impact on our defense. He's an amazing run defender, and can both pressure and cover if needed. With Dansby possibly leaving next year, there's no doubt that he will fill a big hole. He'd also bring some youth to a young linebacker group.
DeAngelo Williams RB: Even though we drafted Beanie Wells and Tim Hightower is only in his second year, Williams would bring the much needed spark to the running game and compliment Wells tremendously. Williams can break a long run at anytime and would give us one of the best offenses in the league. He's also has good hands and would fit the offense in that perspective as well.
So those are who I would want on the Cardinals. Which player(s) would you take?

My first pick by a mile would be Jeff Otah
That guy is a serious player and we could stick him over there at LT and forget about the position for 8 to 10 years. He may not be as good as Ryan Clady but he’ll make it to his share of Pro Bowls.
Peppers is almost 30 and sounds like he’s got some serious motivational issues. Beason would be my second choice.

Like those picks.
Otah is a freaking beast and would be a substantial upgrade over Gandy. I would have to take Otah first as well.
Peppers is starting to get old and we have enough old players on our defensive front and like you said it sounds like he is having motivational issues.
Beason is one of the better young MLBs in this league and is also a good defensive leader. He is not afraid to call out players that are not playing well and he is just all over the field when he plays. Beason would also be my second choice.

Imagine getting Beason
and keep Dansby. Would be some good ILBs
What? I didn't break it, I was just testing its durability, and then I placed it in the woods becuase it's made out of wood and I just thought he should be with his family.

Would be a good combo.
Beason plays a physical, bruiser type game and Dansby is more of a finesse guy. Then you bring in Gerald Hayes to the mix and you got probably the best ILB unit in the league.

As a Cardinals fan, I think we could really use the leadership and skill set of Jake Delhomme. In fact, I think we should all petition the Cardinals front office asking them to petition the NFL to allow for a late trade.
I know, as a Cardinal fan, that the Panthers would sorely miss Jake Delhomme. His statistics are misleading, he is really a top notch NFL quarterback.
So whatdy’a say guys, let’s do everything we can to get Jake Delhomme out of Carolina. They may even be willing to send us John Fox, too!

Jonathan Stewart
Stewart reminds me of " clock killing " Corey Dillion. Stewart is a big, strong , powerful runner with excellent contact balance, vision and strength. He is a physical back when running inside, with the speed to grab the corner. Stewart can make you miss in space and move the pile when defenders make contact.
He is younger and has less wear than Williams with greater long term durability becauase of his superior size.
He would compliment Wells while pushing Wells to play to his potential. Stewart would be a feature back for all but a handful of teams in this league.

so what's the difference between Stewart and Wells?

Wells is bigger
That’s why Williams would make a better fit with Wells.

Wells Vs Stewart
Wells had trouble staying on the field at Ohio St. His toughness had been questions by "draft experts " and he was not targeted by the FO (Donald Brown.) He effort was inconsistent in college (was not dominate week to week.) He has been nicked-up with something all season. He looks like he needs to 100% to play well. That said, I have written in earlier post that I thought he had the potential to be the best feature back of the 09 Draft and the best back to wear Cardinal Red since O. J. Anderson. So I do like him as a player.
When watching Wells I do not see a player that is a paticularly physical inside runner. I dont think that he runs to his size. That could change with an attidude shift but right now I THINK he runs like a smaller back in the 210-215 pound range.
Again, I am not being critical of Wells. Is there a reason why he has not established himself as the starter by now ? Of course. It can’t be pinned on the coaching staff. If he wants it, he has the talent to do it. Scat backs are less difficult to find but backs with the mentality to hammer it up inside with dicipline are much more difficult to defend (clock killers.)

Stewart has had the same injury problems.
He player a lot of last year injured with an injury to his foot. Stewart has not missed any regular season games because of injuries but there are some instinces that he probably should not have played.
Wells played well in the preseason game agianst the Packers and he was not close to 100%. He played against the Giants with an injury that had him listed as questionable all week, think he played fine there. Wells has also ran in side just fine from what I have seen. The times he has not is because he either had no patience and ran the play too fast or the blocking was just bad. Wells has always been a physical runner and a great compliment to him is a DeAngelo Williams and Leon Washington type.

Wells smashed Pierce up the middel a couple times from what I remember.

Yea, I think when Wells struggles up the middle or running in general is just because he is still learning, Whiz says he does not have a lot of patience yet, or because the blocking has been bad. We have seen when he gets adequate blocking and runs smart we get a very dangerous back, like the Giants game.
by Pyromnc on Oct 30, 2009 11:52 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think this is just a case of only seeing Stewart from a distance while overanalyzing Wells
Any scouting report you look at for Stewart says that he almost runs to contact too much and that he’s constantly dealing with nagging injuries, both at Oregon and in Carolina.
You do realize that this time last year DRC hadn’t won the starting job from “I’ve been cut twice in six months” Eric Green and DRC didn’t miss OTA’s and 3/4’s of training camp? Whiz doesn’t like throwing rookies into the mix early on, why is that Wells’ fault?
Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Yup
Which means Cody Browns injury could be a good thing. Develop on the sideline and learn before next year.

We can't agree all the time Gentleman
It just wouldn’t be great discussion if we did. Hey Bezekira, I am able to watch Stewart EVERY week on game tape with the Ticket and Cut-ups courtesy of Superfan. We agree, playing with injury is par fot the course at the RB position.
The next ten games will go a long way towards telling us if I am right or you all are about Beanie. Believe you me, I want to be wrong and see Wells become the Franchise Back WE think he can be.
We are talking Fantasy football right ? By complimenting Stewart it would seem to some that I’m bashing Wells. That simply is not the intention.

Agreed on the Outside Linebacker.
I think Reggie Wells has done a nice job at the LG spot. Deuce Lutui has not been great but he has been fine at RG as well. The part of the line that have been bad has been the LT and RT positions. I imagine if we take an offensive lineman in the next years draft, it would be a tackle.

Man, that would stir up a lot
What would we do with Brown? Bench him or move him to guard? I don’t see Whiz drafting an OT. He seems committed to the line as it is. If anything, we take a LB if Dansby leaves.

we'll have to address LT eventually
Gandy is a free agent after this season.
I’d say our biggest needs heading into the offseason (as of right now) are OLB and LT. Hopefully Cody Brown will be one starting OLB next year and maybe Haggans can hold down the other starting spot for one more season but we need another young talented pass rusher to eventually take over that other side. If we don’t draft an OT to start next year we’re probably looking at Brandon Keith taking over at LT next year and despite how highly he’s regarded, he still hasn’t taken an NFL snap.
ILB jumps into the mix if/when Dansby is gone.
Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
by Bezekira on Oct 30, 2009 10:36 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Depends on what they do with Gandy next season.
Gandy is in the final season of his contract and has not exactly played well this season. If he does not take a pay cut, I cannot see him really comming back next season.
If he does not come back than you have to evaluate whether you think Herman Johnson or Brandon Keith are good enough to start at the LT. If not, than we probably are looking for our next LT in next years draft. I doubt they move Brown to that spot either.
It does not look like Brown will get moved from his current spot, even though I think he is better suited for the guard position based on how he has played. Whiz has also said many times how much he likes the current group we got now too.
If we do go Tackle it will most likely be to replace Gandy. Otherwise I think your right, we most likely will be going with a linebacker in the draft whether it is OLB or ILB.

Question for Cards fans...
Why are you guys so high on Jeff Otah?
Otah is very solid at RT, no doubt. But it surprises me you’d pick him for your O-line over our Pro Bowl LT Jordan Gross.

Otah is younger, and is still learning how to play despite already being solid. He also has a more favorable contract.
Gross has a huge contract which is not a good thing right now for the Cards. they have too many big contracts with Wilson, Fitz, Warner, Brown, and then players looking for big / new contracts are Docket, Boldin, and Dansby.

I honestly just hadn't thought about Gross
but he’s a 29 year old Pro Bowler who’s missed one game in 6 1/2 seasons soooooo, I’d take him in a heart beat too.

Yeah sounds like a good tackle to me.
How about both, then we can get rid of Gandy and Brown. Problem solved.

Well for starters any talented OT right now would be better then Levi Brown
But Otah is younger and a long term solution at OT would be more favorable.
