RotB Pick'em: Week 4 Results & Week 5 Picks
The table is getting expansive as various tie-breakers sift out the standings with a new player to the Pick'em League at its acme. Those with a winning percentage above 70% are in the first table; the rest are found on the subsequent table after the jump. In addition to RottPhiler, seven other participants posted 7-1 records in Week 4 and earned 0.12 Week Won Points. Congratulations RottPhiler et. al.
It wouldn't be a RotB Pick'em League unless the Rules Lawyer made an appearance at least once. As some have noticed and commented, there is a "loop hole" in the rules that allows a participant to pick some games but withhold the the MNF game pick until after seeing the results from their first seven picks. If their record is good and the MNF match-up "obvious", then a MNF pick is made and the week "counts". If their record is poor and/or the MNF game doesn't have a heavy favourite, the game isn't picked and the whole week's results are "thrown out". This is the "Elmer Fudd Tactic" as Drullin'OverDaCards insinuated via metaphor. As we can all recall from our Looney Tune youth, Bugs Bunny always outwitted Elmer and thus the Rules Lawyers have a new decree:
Any week that has a Thursday game as one of the eight selected games, the entire week's selected games must be picked before the Thursday game kick-off.
So Elmer Fudd is welcome to go "huntin' for wabbits" Week 2 through 9, but the remainder of the schedule it's pick'em or skip'em. My stalling tactic to see who Red Reign picks minutes before the Sunday AM games is no longer valid either. Bummer. So not only do Thursday games mess with your fantasy football line-up, they force your hand prematurely at Pick'em. Geez, you are a dick "Hawk".

Cincinnati and Cleveland haven't gotten much "love" on the Selected Games section so make their first appearances on the slate of eight games. I imagine NBC wishes they could flex out the Colts/Titans game in favour of the Patriots/Broncos game at this point.

Before I forget with all the packing...
Baltimore (The Bengals are the AFC’s Cardinals so I’m happy for them with their start but an irked 52 could literally get you shot)
Cleveland (Anderson nearly did enough to get a tie last week, against the struggling Bills, that should be a W)
Carolina (Redskins are the medicine they need on both sides of the ball)
Atlanta (Old NFC West match-up, Ryan will help the Cards out)
Arizona (As long as BSP doesn’t finish this game, we should be okay)
New England (How did the imploding Broncos end up 4-0?)
Indianapolis (Colts have been on the Pick’em Schedule so much you’d think they were in the NFC West)
NYJets (’Phins and Jets too)

I picked Fudd as I expect my strategy to work about as well for me as it does for Mr. Fudd.
Putting on the rules lawyer hat – When the thursday games start will it still be allowed to change picks up until start time of the game being changed?
I for one am fine with changing the rule effective immediately. I would suggest the rule when changed be: In your first post you have to pick all 8 games, but can change (but not eliminate) any pick up until game time of each individual game.
Respectfully submitted,
E. Fudd, Esq.

I'm with you on that
I don’t think there’s any problem changing picks, I just don’t think you should be able to strategically NOT pick on purpose.
Put your best 8 guesses out there, and change them a million times if you want to, but at each game time you’re locked in.

The latest time-stamped entry is the "boss"...
…as long it posts before the respective kick-off times. So if JaMarcus Russell falls off the bus just before the game and cracks his head open, you can change your Raider pick to be in favour of them since any other QB gives them a better chance of winning.
The Elmer Fudd Tactic is a clever use of of the rule from last year that was in place for folks that forgot about the Thursday game and picked it just before kick-off. Rather than make hasty decisions on the rest of the week’s games, they were allowed give those remaining picks at a later time. Using that flexibility to ween out a bad week of picks is smart, frankly, even if a bit “cheesy”. So rather than squelch the cleverness entirely, stalling on the MNF game is only available for part of the season, weeks that don’t have Thursday games.
Forcing people to pick the eight games before the Thursday game will hopefully lead to some hasty decisions which could “mix up” the standings and add some drama to the Pick’em League.
A more common tactic used is to just not pick a particular week that has tough games. If you have a nice record and don’t want to drop in the standings, just skip the week entirely. That’s something that can be done up to eight times.

Redoing my Week 5 Picks.
CIN – The Bengals come back stronger after a mediocre game last week.
BUF – Browns won’t do what they did against Cincy.
WAS – Their defense and running game put them ahead.
SF – Too strong for the Falcons.
ARI – Texans struggle against the 3-4 and I think we finally see a run game out of Wells.
DEN – Brady always struggles at Denver. People shouldn’t doubt the Broncos this year.
IND – I think Titans try to win this one but the Colts are doing too good now.
MIA – Miami is on fire and I think Sanchez still isn’t ready for a MNF matchup.

My picks
Baltimore – This team is more hungry then the browns
Buffalo – Cleveland will have problems on the road
Carolina – they will get their first win
San Francisco – San Fran is too physical for Atlanta
Arizona – cards win after extra week of rest
New England – Broncos will get exposed
Indianapolis – Too easy
Jets – Miami won’t have the same rushing success they had last week
Hey, hey, hey hey hey, watch the language, ok? I have a family.

Week 5 picks
CIN – Baltimore is FLAT after being cheated out of/losing to the Pats because of Clayton’s drop.
CLE – Derek Anderson at least has the arm to air it out, and the Bills’ secondary is currently lacking their starting FS, starting SS and starting CB. They get the nod here, and avoid a 1-15 record.
CAR – Lets see who disappoints the least.
SF – Falcons simply have no offense, while San Fran shouldn’t have a problem shutting down Turner and forcing Ryan to beat them. And here’s the kicker – I don’t think he can.
ARI – Because if they don’t, I swear to god…
NE – This’ll be interesting in that Belichick will basically be tasked with shutting down his very own offense. Denver’s defense is better (yes, that’s right), but I’ll take Brady and his weapons over Orton any day of the week.
IND – TEN will go balls out, but Peyton is simply insane right now. He’s the best football player in the league, and it isn’t even close. Without a consistent pass rush, he’ll have all the time he needs to do what every other QB has done this year – shred the Titans’ overrated secondary.
NYJ – Miami gave it their all the last time they were on prime time, but I just don’t see them having the defense or offense to put away the Jets, though they sure as hell will try their best yet again.

CORRECTION NEEDED
I was given credit for 7 wins last week when I only had 6. I changed my original pick of New England beating Baltimore to Baltimore beating New England before the game started. I also had Tennessee winning which didn’t happen. By my count that puts me at 25 wins and 7 losses for the season, and a weeks won score of .06 still. Although I will gladly take the extra win, it was given in error. Let judgement be passed and a ruling made…
Having said my piece, here are my picks for the week:
Baltimore
Buffalo
Carolina
Atlanta
Arizona
Denver
Indianapolis

HOU – matt schaub/aj too much for our secondary.
DEN – brady got lucky last week.

I should skip this week, cause I'm feeling too good with my picks. But I'm way too competitive for that.
Bal- Cin comes back down to earth.
Buf- Buf gets out of their own grave.
Car- With the riff between Portis and his fullback, I could see blocking of “The Program” persuasion.
ATL- Honestly think SF wins, but we need to catch up.
Ari- See above.
NE- Don’t ask me why.
Ind- Be a shocker if they didn’t win.
NYJ- Who has the better D?
Life's too short. Be a fan. Orlando Magic, Arizona Cardinals,Tampa Bay Rays and of course "the U"! What a winning combo.
