Got Questions About The Houston Texans?

Howdy, ROTBers. I'm Tim from Battle Red Blog, the SB Nation site for all things Houston Texan. Seeing as how our respective squads are set to tangle on Sunday, I figured I'd head over here to see if you have any questions about the NFL's youngest franchise.

Want to know how Antonio Smith has looked in his first few games as a Texan? I'll opine. Dying to know if I think the Houston secondary can handle your explosive passing game? I'll quietly begin sobbing and attempt to choke out an answer. Wondering if I would take Andre Johnson over Larry Fitzgerald? I'll respond and tell you why.

So fire away, Cardinal fans. Here's to an exciting game on Sunday that sees everyone emerge healthy.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Revenge of the Birds' (ROTB) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of ROTB's editors.

not really a football related question

but is Houston all cleaned up from the big hurricane last year?

Re: Ike

For the most part, Houston is cleaned up. Galveston, Bolivar, Gilchrist (the places right on the water)…not even close. They were hit ridiculously hard.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

the city is back. houston was affected primarily grid wise, meaning we all lost power for a couple of weeks…. but that was the biggest thing. now as was previously stated by tim, galveston and all those affected areas are STILL in the process of trying to rebuild, same as Kemah and places like that.

I'll just pick up from where you left off.

How has Antonio Smith looked?

Out of Fitz and AJ, who would you rather have?

Who gets credit for your 9th ranked pass defense? The D line or the DBs? And how has your secondary looked so far this season?

Is Matt Shaub the long-term answer at quarterback?

Do you think the Texans will still make the playoffs and why?

What areas on the team to the Texans need to address before Sunday?

Hey, hey, hey hey hey, watch the language, ok? I have a family.

1. He looked very good against Oakland a couple of days ago. That was really the first time he was consistently visible. The first three games of the year, he wasn’t exactly a difference-maker.

2. Although I’m admittedly biased, give me ‘Dre. I think he’s the best WR in the league. Can’t really take issue with anyone who’d rather have Fitzgerald, though.

3. That ranking is VERY misleading. The Houston secondary is abysmal; it simply hasn’t been statistically ravaged yet because NYJ, TEN, and JAX were all able to run at will against us. If you guys don’t come out throwing early and often on Sunday, you’re missing a golden opportunity.

4. I believe so. Give him time to throw, and he’s as good as anyone in the league. He’ll never be Roethlisberger-esque in shaking off pressure, so if you get in his kitchen, he’s very vulnerable.

5. I called 10-6 and no playoffs before the season starts. No reason to adjust my prediction on the lack of a playoff appearance at the moment, as the defense has not looked playoff-caliber.

6. Secondary, Defensive Line, and Running Back.

schaub, like it or not, is our guy. he doesn’t throw bullets, but he throws the nicest spiral in the league, and his balls are catchable. i think that’s the difference between him, and a guy like russell for the raiders. a guy can run a 5 and out and jemarcus will gun it like he’s 30 yds downfield. lol.

Two Rooks

Cushing and Barwin are two guys that we were interested in heading into the draft. How have they looked so far? Are there any other rookies who are worth mentioning?

Re: Rookies

I was as anti-Cushing as it gets leading up to and after the draft, so understand that I do not say this lightly: Cushing has exceeded all reasonable expectations. While he doesn’t look great in coverage, he’s been a revelation against the run. He may already be the best tackler on the squad; if he’s not, he’s definitely in the discussion.

Barwin has been used almost exclusively as a third down pass rusher and hasn’t really made any sort of impact yet. He’s young and inexperienced, however, so it’s going to take some time.

In terms of other rookies you could see, Glover Quin (CB/S) could very well start again on Sunday, depending on whether Jacques Reeves is healthy and/or ready. After having a strong preseason, he looked lost until the OAK game; there, he looked very solid. Brice McCain (CB) could also see the field in dime packages; he’s small, but lightning fast.

Have to agree on the cushing part with Tim...

Cushing is a monster…and I mean monster. The guy is damn near lineman size and lightning fast and strong.

I mentioned this in another thread but I watched him run THROUGH a leadblocker (FB) in the Jacksonvville game on his way to crushing MJD.

Fun stuff.

Watched Cushing get the safety last week, extremely impressed

He is quality.

I think your defense was great last week, but I can see it coming into a top 5 defense with just a little work in the secondary.

When the defense actually plays the way it is designed to...

They are really really good.

Problem is, we have had alot of mental mistakes. busted plays because guys miss their assignments.

They are getting better as they learn the assignments and gaps they are supposed to cover. If they get it all together soon, we will have a defense that can give our offense easy shots at winning the game.

We say that a lot too around here...

Unfortunately, mental mistakes are part of the game and if a defense can’t clean them up, that’s just their identity. The Cardinals should have been a top five defense the last 3 years. Sigh..

Coaching and WR

Per my interest in looking at things from a scouting stand point why would take AJ over Fitz, and where would you rate Boldin as a WR, please elaborate.

Why has Kubiak not been as successful as Texans fans would have liked ? Is it the owner ? Is it poor drafts ? Or is it a lack of symmetry structurally between owner, front office and the coaching staff ?

The fan support appears to be there.

by Cardsfan81 on Oct 7, 2009 11:11 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

I'll take this one

1. Mos of us would take Johnson over Fitz but like Tim said, you can’t argue with the other point of view. The thing is as Texans fans, we’ve seen AJ do everything. Fitz and Boldin are both amazing WR’s, both of whom are in the top 5 in my opinion, but both have their particular specialities. It’s not as if Boldin can’t go deep, but it seems as if Larry is better at pure vertical routes. Again, Fitz can run routes over the middle and bubble screens, but it seems that those are more of Anquan’s specialities.

We’ve seen Andre do all of th above, and with shaky QB play at times (David Carr). To repeat though, I’m not saying that Fitz or Boldin can’t do everything because they’ve both proved they can, I just think that Andre can do everything exceptionally well. Then again, you have to consider the source and discount for bias.

2. The first couple of years of Kubiak’s tenure met or exceeded our expectations considering what he inherited. Last year and this year is when we expect the most out of Gary and the Texans. Bob McNair is one of the best owners in the NFL. I believe that you can’t judge drafts (unless they’re obviously terrible) until about three years later, but it seems that our drafts have been at least average if not above. If they don’t succeed this year (a winning record) it’s most likely should be attributed to players not executing or coaching.

You know... for kids.

on Koob.

the other thing is, i believe it takes at least 3 to 4 seasons for a coach to put his “stamp” on a team. we are finally, for the most part, done with 3-13 seasons… and from our original team, we only have 2 guys remaining, only one still playing. im a HUGE koob fan.. he’s a hometown boy.

not really related to this game but

What big contract issues will the Texans face in the off season and what will be their needs in the draft?

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Re: Contracts

Depending on whether we head into an uncapped year in 2010, the following guys have contract issues:

1. DeMeco Ryans—cannot fathom him in another uniform.
2. Owen Daniels—Pro Bowler, but allegedly wants Kellen Winslow money, which could make retaining him awfully tough.
3. Dunta Robinson—supposedly turned down $23 mil guaranteed before getting franchised. Poor decision on his part, and I seriously doubt he’ll be back.
4. Matt Schaub—I believe that the Texans have a $10 mil bonus to decide upon concerning Schaub in the offseason.
5. Kevin Walter—proven he’s a legit No. 2 WR and could very well have priced himself out of Houston.

And Then...

There’s the matter of getting Super Mario locked up to a new deal and the potential to renegotiate with Steve Slaton, who will almost certainly want a long-term deal for bigger dollars than the rookie deal he’s playing under now.

Re: OL

I’d say Duane Brown and Eric Winston (LT and RT) are here to stay. Studdard replaced Pitts (who got injured and is a free agent at the end of the season) at LG and basically has the rest of the season to prove he’s up for the job. Brisiel isn’t setting the world on fire at RG, but he’s not a gigantic liability either. The weakest part of the line is likely at C; Chris Myers is a fine football player but gets blown up by big NTs.

blown up

implies many many pieces being fragmented. its more like “Vaporized” as he truly disappears, as evidence shows Mr. Jenkins of the Jets going thru him like a cloud.

Looking forward to not having an 8-8 year!

I would like to use the term

Bitc* Slapped.

Seems very fitting, considering what Kris Jenkins did to him on the home opener.

How are your special teams?

I keep hoping to see Breaston break off a big punt return.

Our special teams are very good...

Last week Jacoby Jones broke off a 92 or 96 yard kickoff return for a td.

Watch the video in this link to see the scoring summary of our last game. Will give you an idea of how the Texans offense plays somewhat.

Re: Special Teams

Kris Brown is as close as it gets to automatic (last week’s miss notwithstanding), Matt Turk generally booms ‘em high and long, and Jacoby Jones is a threat to take it to the house every time he touches the ball (he is just as likely to put the ball on the turf, however, so you’ve got that going for you).

Coverage teams are generally rather strong. The Texans don’t typically allow big returns.

Here's a link to Texans Offensive Lineman Eric Winstons Video Blog.

He talks about the game. Nothing earthshattering, but you may find it interesting to hear his opinions of the cards.
