Arizona Cardinals Release TE Byrd, Sign LB Monty Beisel
The Arizona Cardinals have released their 4th string tight end Dominique Byrd today, and signed former Cardinal linebacker Monty Beisel.
Searching for depth at linebacker – especially after Gerald Hayes and Chike Okeafor missing games with back problems and having the inexperienced Reggie Walker and Ali Highsmith on the roster – the Cardinals brought back veteran Monty Beisel today. The Cards wanted Beisel when his contract expired after last season , but Beisel instead followed Todd Haley to Kansas City. Then Beisel was cut after just three games and has been searching for a job since. He had been in contact with the Cardinals in an attempt to come back since then.
To make room on the roster, the Cards decided they couldn’t hang on to four tight ends any longer. They released Dominique Byrd, who had yet to appear active in a regular-season game this season. With Anthony Becht and Ben Patrick taking hold of the two tight end spots on game day and Stephen Spach a more accomplished blocker than Byrd, Byrd was the odd man out.
Beisel, an ROTB favorite, was a special teams ace last year and should provide veteran depth to a linebacking corps that has been banged up the last few weeks. In the three years he was with Arizona, Beisel appeared in 40 games and registered 78 tackles. The Cardinals signed linebacker Pago Togafau and defensive end Jason Banks to the practice squad, both also being former Cardinals. They released FB Jed Collins and DT Antoine Holmes to make room.

this is great news
I’ve been touting Beisel since he was released. I hope this doesn’t mean that Hayes back is going to be a lingering problem.
Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
Let's hope not
He looked ok standing up Jackson on Sunday.
What? I didn't break it, I was just testing its durability, and then I placed it in the woods becuase it's made out of wood and I just thought he should be with his family.

Way excited to have Beisel back!
But I’m dissapointed to see Byrd leave, because in my opinion he never got a chance. We saw some preseason action and Byrd did well in the passing game, but I think I saw him play one snap in regular season, in which he made a catch (correct me if I’m wrong). I’ve never liked Stephen Spach, and would rather see him cut. He has the experience, but with that comes the wear on his body, and he’s shown he has trouble staying healthy. Yes, Spach is a better blocker, but with Becht and Patrick and the limited use of TE’s in this offense, they could have developed Byrd. But instead they would rather opt to have a well rounded TE drop into their lap in the off season. But I’m happy about Beisel, that was a move I’ve wanted them to make for a while now. He will make us a better defense and special teams.
Welcome back Monty!
if you saw Byrd in the regular season, it was in street clothes on the sideline
he hasn’t been active for any game this season.

+1 Haven't seen him in a reg season game either
Looked good in preseason though.

Who is the odd man out on game day?
Assuming Monty is dressed and playing on ST at minimum? Let’s assume Walker already isn’t dressing, Urban seems to be the odd man out with the WR corps, House and Keith aren’t dressing, BSP is emergency, so that leaves three more guys…thoughts? Spach…?
We all leave footprints in the sands of time, just watch out for the discarded fish hooks!
Spach was among them last week.
Think he is again this week.
Walker, Spach, House, Keith, Urban, BSP, Rashad Johnson, not sure who the 8th would be…
Right now we would have 2 QB’s, 7 OL, 5RB, 2 TE, 5 WR, 6DL, 8 LB, 8 CB, 3 ST.
My guess would be RB or another LB. Of the running backs it would have to be Krieder or Wright. Of the LB I would guess either Berry, Davis, or Highsmith.
I think we will see Monty active immediately
and see Highsmith or Walker out. Another though is Kreider or Wright as mentioned below. Maybe even LSH. LSH has been a dissapointment returning kicks thus far especially with his fall last week. I hate saying this because I really want him to make it in the league. The only thing that keeps him on the active roster right know is he ability to cover on special teams and down punts on the 2 yard line. That being said I think its Wright. We did see him at fullback at a crucial point last week and he made a sound block but i dont think he is enough of a bruiser. he can get a body on somene but I dont think he will be knocking anyone back anytime soon. Interesting Berry is brought up with Will Davis seemingly surpassing him on the depth chart last week. Cody Brown has got to be screaming mad he is missing so much time.
Urban may be done for the year with Doucets play on ST. He wasnt great but did make a good stop and was at least solid. The game when both were active urban only saw the field as ST, never as a receiver. Maybe if Urban goes inactive as well as one of the others we are discussing we will see not only Monty but Brandon Keith or Herman Johnson. I also think with Monty that Reggie Walker might not dress sunday (granted Chike & Gerald are good to go).

Yea, I really doubt it's LSH.
Leads the team in special teams tackles right now. He is very good in coverage and has been about average on returns. I think you got it right with Wright being the one to be inactive.
glad LSH wasnt inactive. He is playing out of his mind.

my money is on Walker
he has been active the past couple of games, I think.
Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
Right now we only got 7 inactives and we need 8.
With Walker, Spach, House, Keith, Urban, BSP, Johnson all being inactive. Need one more.
Greg Toler?

Possibly.
He’s played pretty well on special teams but we don’t really need to have 8 defensive backs active on gameday.
I was thinking one of the running backs would be deactivated for the game. Would have to be Kreider or Wright if that was the case.
LSH is not going to be the one.
He is still too important to not be out there they use him on passes and hopefully start using him on screens

I Don't think Kreider is going anywhere near the inactive list this season

+1 krieder is a beast and asset to the running game
I loved that he actually caught a pass last week. Beanie is starting to get his timing with krieder so right now he’s a keeper.
I’m glad urban has been deactivated and doucet is finally playing ST. That was his only knock before. I think he’s going to prove that he can make those catches that urban has been dropping.

sc464, I have to disagree with you regarding LaRod Stephens-Howling. The Cardinals are 12th in the league in opponent kick return, and Stephens-Howling has accounted for 13 tackles. The Cardinals average 22.6 yards on kick return. 22.8 yards is LSH’s average, and he has a long of 53 yards. The “only thing” you mentioned is an incredible tool to have. He is screaming fast, so whether this leads to a tackle, a forced change of direction from the receiver, or a downed punt at the 2 yard line, he has been a fantastic rookie (aside from the 7th round status).
P.S. Herman Johnson will be a project for the rest of this year and most likely, the following year.
This is only going to improve
An area that I think is really strong this season is ST. This has been the first year of many I havnt been worried a return man is going to make a game changing play when we punt or kick off the ball, in fact, quite the opposite.
