Ask a Norseman

Howdy, all a friendly Viking fan here who is interested in getting some banter started up about the upcoming game.  I know I am excited and I’m sure you all are as well.  It is nice to be playing a quality team after some of the lighter games we have played in the past.  So here it is a devout Viking fan here to help you understand the purple and gold.  Ask your questions any and all from players, coaches strategies and what AP eats the morning before a game.  I or another lurker from DN shall attempt to answer!  Personally, I hope that Warner is back for this game it would make one of the better games this week to watch.

Sunday’s game looks to be a good one lets all hoist a beer and yell SKOL!  (or squawk not sure what you all do over here.. J )

Questions

Any chance your team would be interested in playing golf all day saturday, drinking late on Saturday night (I’ll buy the tequila shots), and sneaking in another round on Sunday before the game?

I grew up in Iowa as a Vikings fan and loved the Farve move. Over the summer I was one of the guys that snuck onto your site and kept saying Farve was going to be a Viking this year, it was just a matter of when. Anyway, I cheer for the Vikings everygame except when they play the Cards. Can’t wait to see you guys go head to head with the Saints in the playoffs.

Any significant injuries in the last few weeks?

Any concerns about the increasing role of Farve and the decreasing role of the running game the last few weeks?

Cards special teams have been on fire lately. Any chance we can break a few off and keep the game close?

Our field is supposed the best playing surface in the NFL per a player poll (it sure cost enough to be able to roll it out of the stadium and park it in the sun). Any vikings players that don’t like the real grass? Have hayfever? Anything else?

by Drullin'OverDaCards on Dec 1, 2009 2:27 PM MST reply actions

You do realize that....

If the Saints and Vikings are playing each other in the playoffs, that means we are either in the top two seeding or we have been eliminated from playoffs.

by Pyromnc on Dec 1, 2009 2:44 PM MST up reply actions

Yes, I realize that.

I will be cheering for the Cards, but I think Vikings v. Saints in the NFC championship is inevitable barring significant injury to one or both teams.

Golf and drinking... not seeing the problem :D

Hrm that does sound like something I’m planning on doing but I’m hoping the team won’t. Personally, I can’t say I was one of the people hoping for Favre to come to the team this year. I mean that’s a lot of bad blood to get rid of… But now that he’s here (and kicking butt) I pretty much have to jump on the band wagon. Nice thing is none of the drama that was worried about ever happened so most of what I thought would have gone wrong didn’t.

We’ve been blessedly lucky in the injuries department. Other than Winfield being out for over a month we’ve not lost any of out starters to injury for any length of time. I don’t know if it’s their cnoditioning, or what but I hope they keep it up.

I think that the Cardinals will be the first team to try and beat us by containing Favre. I think this is what Childress was looking for. A time when people finally decide that they have to risk letting AP go. Now I’m not to worried about Favres arm as he’s had time to rest the last two games during the fourth quarter. Plus have you seen him play?

last year I would say that if you have a good specail teams then you’ll probably score at least two points off of it during the game. This year, out special teams have done a 180, and I don’t see any teams putting points on us through it.

Like I said before if Warner playes this could be a close game with lots of offense going both ways. I don’t thikn the field will be to much of a factor it is really nice (Been there once when I lived in Pheonix) and while we are apretty fast team I don’t think it will be to bad. Plus while we’re down there maybe Favre will look for a place to retire. Everyone else from MN does..

Hi im kdog69 from DN

I just wanted to add that I too hope Warner plays!
Win or lose, high scoring games are much better to watch then defensive standoffs.
On the injury front, our right guard Anthony Herrera left with a concussion not sure of his
current status. Artis Hicks is a veteran backup and will play in Herreras absence.
Heres hoping for an exciting high scoring game. Cheers Cardfans!!!

i fear that once the opposition figures out ...

…that focusing on stopping favre and the passing gave , and leaving 6 or 7 in the box, this will a) get favre to force more throws and thus , picks.. and b) just tell your D that when you tackle AP, hold him up and go for the strip and tho he may get 150/2tds, or so, he will also likely lose 1 or 2 fumbles.. i think THAT strategy may unfortunately slow the vikings current steamroller..

by BranFavrenton on Dec 3, 2009 9:50 PM MST up reply actions

Pass vs. run

Teams still stack the box for AP so we take to the air and the more we do the better the report
between Brett and the recievers. AP is always a threat and thats the beauty of the situation.

How the hell is Favre still playing like he is in his 20s?

Back when the season started I was expecting Favre to be there as a threat to pass the ball so some pressure is taken off of All Day, but it looks like the Vikings are evolving into more of a passing team, and I’m amazed Favres arm hasn’t gone out yet like it did last year.

How's your secondary playing so far this year?

Seeing as how airing it out seems like our best chance of winning, I’m hoping the answer is terrible.

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

by Bezekira on Dec 2, 2009 6:21 AM MST reply actions

Better than expected

Usually our secondary is a glaring weakness, but I think they are scheming the front four out of run defense being their primary goal and using them to put more pressure on the QB. this is allowing our secondary to reap some benifits. As well since we rush with just the front four (on most downs) it allows our line backers to cover the insides. I always worry about other teams tightends, but this year we’ve been very good about shutting down the opposing teams big playmaker receiver. However, I’m not sure we’ve gone up against someone of Fitz’s caliber either. Would be nice if Winfield would get back out there. Never a good thing when your missing a pro-bowl corner from your line up.

by Grime on Dec 2, 2009 6:45 AM MST up reply actions

it depends which Cards team shows up

lets just say we’ve been a little erratic at home this year

even if Leinart plays, the Vikes love to let teams back into games o0

Not recently however

granted it was against Detroit Seattle and Chicago, but they did a really good job of finishing those teams off

TE up the middle...

was our problem early in the season…
but as Grime reports, SO much pressure from the front four that our secondary has been adequate without Antoine Winfield.
We expect him back and would very much appreciate his skill against your WRs.
LBs have lifted their game too… but it all comes back to the Four Norsemen up front!

I BELIEVE...

by ArizonaVikingsFan on Dec 2, 2009 12:19 PM MST up reply actions

The first week that Winfield was out,

(and I can’t remember which game that was), certain members of the secondary were pretty awful, but most of that seems to have been cleared up.

As others have said, the biggest thing we have going is that our front four can usually pressure the QB without blitzing; that both puts more guys in coverage, and still doesn’t give the opponents QB all day to find a defender. It seemed like we were blitzing more early in the year, but it was evident that we were less successful when we blitzed, and so it seems they’ve backed off of that to a great extent.

by Migrant lurker on Dec 2, 2009 7:27 PM MST up reply actions

interesting to see what you guys think about your old QB

I think the Cards and Vikes are in similar situations in that we’re both enjoying pretty good success led by very old QB’s who could conceivably retire in the near future. Considering both of our backup plans contain more question marks than answers at this point, I’m wondering how you guys feel about your future in a post-Favre era?

Also, considering that Favre was probably one of the most hated players in the Vikings’ country about a six months ago, how will he ultimately be remembered among you guys? In a decade will he be remembered as a Viking or a hated-Packer?

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

by Bezekira on Dec 2, 2009 7:15 AM MST reply actions

i agree!!

…best scenario for #4 to retire as a vike …he wins TWO super bowls.. (he only has one in 17 yrs as a packer).. THAT would likely cause mass suicide in wisconsin..i, for one, (as an ex-favre hatre, now fully believe he is the second coming of JC!!

Jarred Allen

Jared Allen gets a lot of publicity becuase guys that get the QB do. Do Viking fans appreciate the Williams wall and understand the impact these two great DT’s have on Allen’s performance and untimately that defense overall ?

What is the long term future of Pat Williams if there is one?

by Cardsfan81 on Dec 2, 2009 12:02 PM MST reply actions

JA gets the press...

He’s the ‘character’ on the line, but YES, we understand that it is the front four that make this work.
We are calling them the FOUR NORSEMEN… they like to be called the Williams/Allen gang – with the rest of the defense known as ‘The Outlaws’. Overall, the D is a very strong unit and it all starts up front.
Pat is aging and we recognize that something will need to be done there in the near future, but quietly, we’ve been building some DE skill on the other side of JA and depth at NT/DT with Fred Evans and Jimmy Kennedy.

We love us our Williams Wall!!

I BELIEVE...

3 men and a mullet

ya know, come to think of it, Cris Carter changed the spelling of his name because of collinsworth … lol

by quid pro quo on Dec 3, 2009 12:15 AM MST up reply actions

Phat Pat

Is the bomb and Kevin is staunch. Jared Allen is not a very good run blocker. Without the Williams we would be facing a lot of teams eager to run on us. I know that Pat has another year on his contract after that I would think the team would let him retire as he would be 35. Kevin is a bit younger so we have a fewmore good years to look forward from him. In the game this week you’ll see Jamey Kennedy sub in for Pat quite on passing downs as we try to keep Pat up and running for the entire game.

As for a prima dona I don’t think anyone on our D fits that bill, hell JA will be out deer hunting in a high hide after the game I’m sure… There seems to be a lot of cohesion on this team. We saw it on the defense last year and now we’re starting to see it on the offense as well.

by Grime on Dec 2, 2009 1:11 PM MST up reply actions

Pat and Kevin don't get press

It’s because they are brutally honest. I mean they probably can’t even publish half the stuff they say. I remember reading a Pat Williams response to the whole starcaps thing…funny stuff if your not offended by strong language

It is looking like Warner will be better in time for the game.

Do you think the Vikings defensive players have enough respect for Warner to try not to hit him too hard? I don’t think anyone there would want to end his career.

The Vikings Offense

Brett “Quarterback Barney” Favre (reference to the puple uniform and Favre’s offseason shenanigans) has been sesantional; playing the best football I think of his career. His presence has really help in the development of the skill players around him. That said. Chilly came to Minnesota as a offensive guru. Why has “Chilly” not been able to develope Tavaris Jackson ? How less explosive would your offense be with Tavaris under center ?

Sidney Rice is really ballin’ out. Playing at a Pro-bowl level. Is Sidney Rice the next Anquan Boldin ?

Your rookie Percy Harvin is a dynamic and explosive player. Very dangerous with the football in his hands. Can or will he be able to line up as an X or Z WR down the road ? Why is he listed on the injury report every week ?

Steve Hutchinson, while still a stud, looks to be declining just tad when you look at him on film. Any concerns moving forward?

by Cardsfan81 on Dec 2, 2009 3:41 PM MST reply actions

Hutch isn't alone...

Im finding myself more often now screaming at the TV that our line is getting blasted into the backfield. Adrian’s rookie season we were clearing the field for him. NOW!… Hutch and Fat lazy Mckinnie are literally 3 yards in the backfield as AP is getting drug down, knocked outta bounds or fumbling to get back to the line of scrimmage. He’s a 1,000 yard rusher, but I have unrealistically high hopes for AP, and truth be told AP has unrealistically high hopes for himself too. :-)

P.S. This game feels like our biggest test since Favre’s reunion with chees ville.

...add #4 to the mix and see what you get... Championship.

by Macdaddy4508 on Dec 2, 2009 6:52 PM MST up reply actions

Another Vikes fan here,

Answering one of the questions – Harvin has migraines, which limit him in practice with some frequency and that has him popping up on the injury report almost every week.

Rice looks a little bit like Larry Fitzgerald (if you squint – from a distance) and his style reminds me a little more of him as well; he is not near that level yet, but then who is. He will go and get the ball and Favre seems to be trusting him to do that more and more every game.

by Migrant lurker on Dec 2, 2009 7:18 PM MST up reply actions

I thought Rice was a pure burner?

Is he not the down field threat that I thought he was?

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

by Bezekira on Dec 3, 2009 7:09 AM MST up reply actions

He's 6'4"

And has great hands. He’s not fast but will go for the ball and if nothing else make sure their isn’t an interception happening off of it. Reminds me of Moss with less speed. A lot less speed :p

by Grime on Dec 3, 2009 7:27 AM MST up reply actions

ok so Fitz then

That’s basically what he does. Not run by the guy but get in position and simply out jump them

Does it still feel weird having Favre on your team after hating him for so many years?

another Favre question

You guys watched Favre throw a INT for every 1.5 TDs he threw during his 16 years in GB but suddenly this year he’s throwing an INT every 8 TDs. What has happened to him this season? Did he suddenly realize that he can’t fit every ball into triple coverage?

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

by Bezekira on Dec 3, 2009 9:59 AM MST reply actions

Only he really knows, but I think it's a couple of things:

One, I think the arm injury last year and his bad performance after it really had an effect on him. He really realized that he’s older, couldn’t do everything he once did, etc. etc. Of course that’s just speculation, but I think there’s some truth to it. Also, his throwing actually looks better than it has in years. Interesting that Elway won two Superbowls after he tore loose the same biceps tendon. Maybe they ought to just surgically remove that particular tendon from every QB on day one.

Second thing is that he obviously came in here with a mindset of taking care of the ball. The first two or three games of the season, there were nothing but short passes, he hardly ever moved out of the pocket and didn’t even move around much in the pocket. It appeared that he was just being super cautious and if he didn’t have a really open receiver he would just stand there and take a sack. The passing game has opened up a lot since then, and he’s become a lot more mobile, but I think the mindset is still there. He has decided that not turning the ball over is a big priority.

I also suspect that his relationship with his coaches, both of whom he has known for a while, has something to do with it. He’s listening to them and I’m sure they are preaching the same thing (as any coach would).

by Migrant lurker on Dec 3, 2009 10:44 AM MST up reply actions

Not only that, but I think this is a statement year for Favre. Sticking it to the Packers, and all the haters. Just like Jordan said at his HOF induction, every time he someone said he couldn’t do something, that’s another log in the fire.

by dsludo on Dec 3, 2009 8:18 PM MST up reply actions

Good game guys the best team won

Hope to see you all in the play offs… Just maybe the best team will have changed :D
