The Arizona Cardinals waived special teams player Ali Highsmith today. He only had 13 tackles on the year and played poorly in the absence of Gerald Hayes.

Wow, really?

That’s something of a surprise…most be something more to this than on-field performance. Character issues?

LB corps are thin and though Ali hadn’t been stellar he’s been serviceable with still some growth potential there. What’s next, resign Buster Davis? ::throws shoes back from the earlier Francisco comment::

Good point

They also lost Harrington recently so now the Cardinals seem to really be spreading themselves thin at LB. I’m thinking this may have something to do with Mike Gandy’s injury.

What? I didn't break it, I was just testing its durability, and then I placed it in the woods becuase it's made out of wood and I just thought he should be with his family.

Highsmith gave Gandy a hernia? Ew

it might mean that they aren't going to put Gandy on IR

but they want to sign another OT just in case Bridges were to go down as well.

It’s odd that neither Urban, Somers or Sando have this yet. I wouldn’t consider it official until one of them reports it.

then again maybe he got injured and they wanted to put him on IR

but he didn’t think it was season ending.

So many possibilities but in the end he proved that he clearly wasn’t ready to play with the defense and with his lack of size his best chance at becoming a linebacker would be in a 4-3 defense.

Highsmith

Highsmith was getting blown out at the point of attack too often and really was not that great a ST player. I’m surprise he lasted this long. Bezekira does Highsmith have the speed to play WS OLB even in a reserve role in a 4-3? I have some question about that.

by Cardsfan81 on Dec 22, 2009 10:40 AM MST up reply actions

I think he might be best served as some teams nickel linebacker

Kind of like how Dallas uses Bobby Carpenter and then maybe after a couple seasons getting stronger/bigger maybe he could move into an every down role. He’s gotta get stronger before anyone looks at him in an every down role but stranger things have happened and he’s still really young.

He’s almost the exact size (or even bigger in some cases) or guys like Michael Boley or Keith Bullock or Mike Peterson.

then again I would have thought that Buster Davis could at least hang onto a roster spot somewhere, so what do I know.

I personally think he regressed from last year.

I admittedly was on his bandwagon after last year but now have switched gears.

well I'm sure his knee injury had some effect on that

It’s not like he was an athletic god before the injury and sometimes it takes more than a year to get all of that explosiveness back. Then again guys like him sometimes don’t get second chances.

Injuries

You know Bezekira, the knee injury is very tricky and is not talk about enough by the “media” when it comes to player performance. I did not know that Highsmith had been dealing with this. Hevchv he did look like a player that had lost some desire on the field to me.

Same for me, hevchv

Highsmith has been battling injuries since he joined the team, so it’s not much of a surprise if something or other was slowing him down.

yea this is odd

Normally Urban or Sando would have at least posted something mentioning it.

Not sure either guys

I’m sure we’ll find out for sure as the week goes on.

Yes two different positions...

But Beisel is a better fit on the inside anyway and he also plays special teams.

awesome news

Will was coming on strong before the injury. I am impressed by Davis’ rookie season so far.

Reggie Walker?

Haven’t seen Reggie Walker’s name much, I would have liked to see him try and fill in for Gerald Hayes, I really liked what I saw in preseason. He made a couple/several goal line stands remember?

they may be trying to keep him low profile (like hes not already)

because he isnt quite ready to be on the active roster and too good to stay on the PS so by not giving him the chance to play it doesnt show teams that he can. Just a thought. I am waiting on someone at the office so just trying to waste some time, haha

I am somewhat in doubt of this, seeing as he was an undrafted rookie FA

It does surprise me that they kept him in favor of Highsmith, but Highsmith got his shot with the D and didn’t really do much. Walker has been inactive most of the season, and with Beisel back I doubt that’ll change very soon.

It was announced that

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Arizona Cardinals released linebacker Ali Highsmith and fullback Brandon Renkart on Tuesday and signed safety Hamza Abdullah and tackle Cliff Louis.

There is a little bit more online but nothing substantial enough to add.

by kj197728 on Dec 22, 2009 6:59 PM MST reply actions

Renkart

Renkart is one that slipped through the cracks for me personally, this is the first time I have read that name.

Abdullah sounds familiar, Bears?

http://undrafteds.com/

by Undrafteds on Dec 22, 2009 7:16 PM MST reply actions

Yeah

Renkart was only on the practice squad. He signed up after they took and then lost Fui Vakapuna from the Bengals. Renkart wasn’t contributing overall so he was expendable. Abdullah I wasn’t familiar with but he has played with the Bucaneers, Broncos, and Browns. I am sure he is there for depth because of Matt Ware going to IR. Cliff Louis is probably there just in case for Gandy or Bridges.

by kj197728 on Dec 22, 2009 7:46 PM MST up reply actions

I'd heard of Abdullah -- mostly from Madden

Renkart confused me as well, but when I realized he was signed as a LB I remembered.
