Arizona Cardinals Injury Report; Gandy To IR

The Cardinals remained relatively unscathed at midpoint this week, with only eight players landing on the injury report. Most notably was left tackle Mike Gandy. He however, won't come off the report as he was put on injured reserve late Wednesday afternoon. Gandy has likely seen his last moments as an Arizona Cardinal and I can't say he'll be missed much.

Other notables that made the report were Larry Fitzgerald (knee), Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (toe), Bryant McFadden (hamstring), and the still-injured Neil Rackers (groin).  Aside from Rackers, all are expected to be fine and play on Sunday.

Some less fortunate to make the list were Sean Morey and Ben Patrick, who are both suffering from concussion-like symptoms. That news isn't good for Morey, who has dealt with concussions in the past. Losing Morey is a blow to a special teams unit that has been tops in the NFL so far. Also doubtful for Sunday's game is linebacker Will Davis. He recently returned from knee surgery, but should be ready once the playoffs begin.

Making other news yesterday was linebacker Pago Togafau, who was pulled up from the practice squad to back up Gerald Hayes. Togafau should see most of his time on kick off duties. In his place, the Cardinals added Ali Highsmith to the squad as he cleared waivers, a fact that would not have happened after the previous two training camps.

Highsmith cleared waivers

When Ali hadn’t been drafted out of LSU last year he was at the top of most “pundits” lists as the best URFA available and when the Cardinals were able to sign him it implied the Cards’ were no longer the “armpit of the NFL”. Ali was raw in the preseason but still made the squad with a couple other players that were too good to clear waivers for the Practice Squad. He proved his roster value on Special Teams last year until his knee injury in St. Louis when the Cards coverage teams started to noticeably slack afterward. It was assumed that Ali’s knee was 100% but his production on the field this year has been poor; how he went undrafted is not as much a mystery anymore but the fact that he cleared waivers when there are several LB starved teams late in the season is a surprise. Ali has some work to do, obviously, to improve his LB ability as his ST work isn’t enough anymore. I’m glad he will get that chance with the Cardinals as the glimpses of ability I’ve seen are promising and another off-season, a healthy off-season, should give him the best chance to shine next year when the Cardinals could be hard-up to find LBs on the roster familiar with Bill Davis’ system.

Rethinking the original picture of Gandy above...

…I have to wonder if that’s when he got the hernia. ::smirk::

Not a fan of Highsmith

The back-up inside LB really needs to be upgraded. I know you need bodies that are familiar with the system this time of the year. Lets hpoe that Highsmith does not have to see the field and if he does it is strictly on ST’s. I sure won’t be missing Gandy either. I do wish him the best however and a speedy recovery.

Now what does concern me is this hamstring deal with McFadden. His veteran presence on the corner is crucial. Hopefully it is not that serious. This is not the time in the season to be getting hamstrings pulls and such.

Patrick?

When did Patrick get a concussion? I must have missed that play. Too bad, he made a really nice play last game, a reception he almost reached the pylon on.

Good bye Gandy! Thanks for all the sacks!

Well I have to say I will not be missing Gandy and his contributions to opposing players stats. I really would like to see what Coach Grimm does with the line in the offseason, I’m thinking there’s going to be a big shakeup and for the better.

I’m very happy with Bridges and how he’s played. If the Cards just give him some help while he’s transitioning to being a starter I think we’ll see far fewer blind side Warner hits and subsequent fumbles.
