Jeremy Bridges

Obviously 1 game is a small sample size, and I didn't spend the whole game watching the LT spot, but my first impression is that Bridges should remain the starter at LT no matter what Gandy's status is next week.  The Cards frequently chipped at Allen with TEs and RBs, and that helped, so its hard to judge how much of the success was due to his performance and how much was due to changes in scheme.

Will Bridges remain the starter?  Should he?

Nah

The scheme gets a lot of credit. We call for it every time Gandy has a down game but it never happens with him — Whiz played it safe today and it worked out.

I will say that Bridges validated his spot on the roster, at the very least. His play makes Bezekira look smart for predicting this game will be a kind of audition for Bridges next year — either with us or elsewhere…

They might give him a shot at starter next year, but I don’t see it this year. He’s too useful as the utility guy, and it’s clear coaching is uncomfortable enough with him to give him a lot of help over there.

I wouldnt bench Gandy but....

I think they should leave Gandy at LT and put Bridges at RT, then move Brown to RG where he is better suited IMO. I like Deuce, but I think this lineup would be better for us.

Bridges got all the help we've been pleading for Gandy/Brown to get

And it worked splendidly against the Vikes, the best defensive front-four team in pro-football this year. If Gandy returns, I’d expect to see more of those formations as they were effective on runs and on passes.

We all leave footprints in the sands of time, just watch out for the discarded fish hooks!

yep......that's exactly what we've been clamoring for

It only took Whiz and Grimm a year and a half but it worked to perfection.

Over confidence in Gandy/Brown or...

…not wanting to tip their hand and get too much film out there?

Regardless, I enjoyed seeing Becht and Patrick lining up next to each other.

And kudos to Brandon Keith for his first “real” NFL play.

Agreed

It only makes sense with a QB like Warner who can read defenses so well and receivers who can make plays. Give Warner the time he needs to hit the deep routes when open.

IMO Bridges looks like a better run blocker than Gandy. He’s a little more physical and has a nasty streak. It’s hard to say how we would hold up pass blocking without the help he got last week. If Gandy is not 100%, they should stick with Bridges and let Gandy get healthy fo the playoffs. Character issues have been a big problem with Bridges in the past. He is a gamble in that way.

credit both our OT's

Bridges got a ton of help but he held his own in some one on one situations as well. With that performance alone he’ll get a decent contract next season and I hope it’s here. He may or may not be a starting LT but he’s the perfect 6th man on any offensive line.

Lost in all of our praise for Bridges was the job done by Levi Brown. With the LT getting TE and RB help, that basically meant that Brown would be on an island against a decent DE and Brown more than held his own. Overall just a great job from the OL as a whole. Maybe their best game of the entire season.

also forget to add some "atta-boys" for Hightower's blitz pickups

How many times did you see a Vikings LB or safety coming free only to see Hightower step into the whole and stone wall the guy. Great game all around from Timmy.

Even after the fumble...

I think Timmy more than made up for it. He was phenominal and I couldn’t find one negative for the game. This was by far the best overall game of the season to me on all five fascets: Offense, Defense, Special Teams, Coaching and the 12th Man ( I would leave the room after every commercial break, but would run back when I heard the crowd. I never missed a play).

Life's too short. Be a fan. Orlando Magic, Arizona Cardinals,Tampa Bay Rays and of course "the U"! What a winning combo.

Yea man...

I think for me this is the 2nd most complete game we have played, the first being the game in Seattle this season. This one is just more impressive because of who we were facing. I definitely think this is the most complete game we have ever played at home since Whiz took over.

by Pyromnc on Dec 7, 2009 7:59 AM MST up reply actions

12th man

I was at the game, and I agree the noise was deafening. Probably the loudest it’s been all year except for maybe the Colts game during the Manning pre-snap circus.

Agreed

That’s why Timmy is still the starter. Beanie has come out and shown he is a beast in the running game and is coming to when it comes to catching the ball, but he is not as good as Timmy is in blocking. Timmy picks up the blitzes very well and has been overlooked by many because of how good Beanie is. It’s great that we have this problem of who to start at runningback now. :-)

Man, how scary is our team starting to become now that the running game is getting in the mix?

by Pyromnc on Dec 7, 2009 7:58 AM MST up reply actions

absolutely

there was one block that lifted the blitzing safety right off the ground and into the dirt. It was great! Warner got hit by the second blitzing linebacker but he got the ball off in time because of Timmys pancake block.

Never do card tricks for the group you play poker with.

Hightower and Brown both deserve praise

Levi is a better run blocker than pass blocker when he gets his assignments right. Levi’s problem is not that he isn’t physically capable of blocking anyone he faces. He just makes bad decisions and misses assignments way too often. He looks really confused out there sometimes.

by WeiWuWei on Dec 9, 2009 5:00 PM MST up reply actions

very true on Levi's inconsistency

He does seem physically capable and it really seems like the problem is between his ears.

What? I didn't break it, I was just testing its durability, and then I placed it in the woods becuase it's made out of wood and I just thought he should be with his family.

I still think with the extra protection that had Gandy been in he would've been beat, and Warner sacked.

That’s why I think Bridges should at least start the rest of the regular season. We can see how he does without the extra protection next week @ SF and if he doesn’t get beat all game then he should be fine for the remaining schedule. Then Gandy would be good to go in the playoffs. The only thing worse than Mike Gandy is an injured Mike Gandy. At least we’re not in Seattle’s position when it comes to the O-line. lol

"The only thing worse than Mike Gandy is an injured Mike Gandy"

LOL

I disagree with you almost completely, but that’s a good line!

by tw3kr on Dec 9, 2009 1:25 AM MST up reply actions

so the logic is to sit Gandy, even if healthy, until the playoffs?

That doesn’t seem to make much sense to me. He’s obviously been good enough to hold down the job for quite a while with little to no help and one game of watching his replacement get tons of help shouldn’t be enough for us to do a knee-jerk reaction.

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

by Bezekira on Dec 10, 2009 9:47 AM MST up reply actions

There's a reason Bridges is a journeyman lineman...

…and why he didn’t make the final cut in Washington, why Carolina didn’t keep him, why the Cards didn’t keep him originally, etc. To anoint a player on a one-game sample size falls into the Al Davis school of management.

We all leave footprints in the sands of time, just watch out for the discarded fish hooks!

by Hawkwind on Dec 10, 2009 10:42 AM MST up reply actions

No the logic is to make sure he's healthy for a playoff run.

Bridges is a solid option at LT, and could hold it down for a couple of weeks to let Gandy heal. If the pelvic injury was worse then thought, and surgery comes up as an option, that’s usually a problem (regardless if he’s been cleared to play). Point being, it would make sense to leave in a healthy, solid back up rather than playing a beat up, less then 100% Gandy, just for the sake of doing so. Maybe I’m a little biased against our starting tackles (for good reason), but it still seems pretty clear to me. If not, what exactly does Gandy have to offer that would make him an upgrade right now?
