Miracle Season Falls Short, Arizona Cardinals Can't Beat the Steelers: Post Game Thread

What a seaon, what a month of January. I'm not liking the month of February so much though.

The Arizona Cardinals couldn't pull off the biggest victory in franchise history on the league biggest stage. Maybe tomorrow or later in the week we can talk about how great this season was, but for now all I can do is stare at the floor, slump-shouldered and disapointed.

What a finish though.  What a finish.  Congratulations Steelers.  This was certainly the most exciting Super Bowl I've ever witnessed.  Sorry Taylor/Montana.

I'm disappointed.

But I am very proud of what this team accomplished this season. All-in-all, excellent season by the Birds and that was one hell of a game. Just to have them be here and have that kind of showing….damn good stuff.

it took amazing players to put you in the position to win the game.......

and a never say die attitude……..unfortunately there was another couple amazing players on the other side too…….its a tough loss to swallow……….but atleast you can feel semi-good knowing your team gave itself every chance to win.

12/19/08 - Thank you KLJ for coming into my life.

Not big on moral victories, but thanks anyways!

Who would win in a fight, Whisenhunt or a Hurricane?
Hold on, hold on, what if the Hurricanes name was Whisenhunt?
Daaaaaaaaaa Cards, Da Cards Da Cards Da Cards Da Cards!!!

Well, thanks for inviting me...

If there would be an MVP for the losing team, who would it be?
And I hope the Cards can honor Pat Tillman when they return to Phoenix, because he was a part of this franchise. Thanks for inviting me to your gameday thread. Now it’s back to Gaslamp Ball talking about the Padres… Thanks, and good luck in 2009.

MVP choices at Hawk's pro-Cards party:

Dockett
Fitzgerald
Warner

That horrible play at the end of the first half was the difference.

agreed hawk (about that harrison INT)

my choice would’ve been dockett.

Thanks for the reminder about Pat Tillman

I’d forgotten he was a Card. Bless him and all our troops in the armed services, past and present.

As much as I cannot stand the Cardinals

I congratulate you on a great season, the Cards played their asses off and really deserved better than this. Wish you the best of luck in the off-season, I would love to have a guy like Fitzgerald on my team.

You have a sure-fire HOF player in Fitzgerald, and a future HOF player in Warner took you to an NFC Championship.

Awesome game

Wish it had fallen your way, but proud at how they battled back from what looked like a blow-out early. Fitz is one special player, and my Edgerrin contributed big as well. Good luck next year!

Good game Cards, good game.

Hats off, you almost pulled it off. Way to battle.

Everyone have a productive offseason!

Thanks for pulling for the Red Birds.

The blood pressure is finally coming down…I smoked for the first time in years after that game…time to hit the Maker’s Mark and see if I wake up and the score somehow was different.

Please come back Kurt. Boldin, stick around, no other place will give you the opportunities to shine like this. Dockett, thank you for an incredible effort. If I can rework my salary to make you happy, I would. Wilson…what did the punter do to you last year? Fitz, you are an incredible athlete and an even more incredible individual off the field. Whisenhunt, simply, wow. Haley, almost, I hope KC isn’t all the pundits claim in it is and you stick around. Grimm, keep working on that line!

Okay, this is turning into an Oscar speech, so goodnight. Hevchv, cue the draft talk!

I say we start with a Defensive Coordinator

Too many times players were out of position and it costs us. DRC, you embarassed me. I counted eight plays where you could have helped and you just pulled up and gave it away. I guess it feels odd to get picked on. He made a few good plays, then reverted back to being a rookie. Clancy, why did you go all out blitz when we needed to cover the middle? Wasn’t that last fumble a forward pass? My blood pressure is still up.
WUESSAA!!!
O.k. draft talk. First I think Q does get his trade for a first and third.
1a. OLB- I think Clancy is gone and we will get Pitt’s LB coach and go 3-4 full time.
1b. HB- Edge is done, but only if he doesn’t restructure. Regardless we need fresh legs.
2. LT- Gandy is just too slow for the speed rush and Levi is too weak on the attack. Levi will move inside and Gandy will move to the strong side, unless Kurt leaves then he will stay on the left side and we will get a right tackle.
3a. CB- Hood will eventually move to the nickle. Yes its true he has a short memory and moves on to the next play, but I just can’t forget how often he gets burned.
3b. ILB- Dansby will be back, but we need rotational players.
4. QB- Kurt is iffy right now and we need a project to mold as Matty’s successor.
5. OL- Just need depth.
6. DL- Need another big to slide between nose and end.
7. DL- Just need more depth.

From a Bronco fan:

Congrats on an awesome season. You guys proved everyone wrong by making it there in the first place, and you put together a helluva fourth quarter. I had a ton of fun watching you in the playoffs, and I was pulling for you all the way in the big one (not just because I bet on you, seriously.) Larry Fitzgerald is an absolute poet at WR. He’s the exact kind of player you want on your team. I heard he would even take a pay cut so Anquan Boldin could come back. Talent AND class. Gotta love it. Also, I love your uniforms (even if you stole your pants from us. :) )Anyway, I’m spending too much time here; I should be letting you guys celebrate your NFC Championship. Good luck next year!

For what's it worth

That was one hell of a game. You guys had a great season, and I’ll look forward to seeing you in the playoffs next year!

Congrats guys

Steeler fan here. You guys played an amazing game and came within inches of one of the greatest come from behind victories in Super Bowl history. Obviously LF and Kurt played great games, but your defense had some heroic moments as well.

I think you guys have a whole lot to be proud of this season. Congrats on a great game and a good season.

From a Giants fan

great game. I didn’t think I was gonna care as much as I did, but it was really hard not to get sucked into your story tonight, and by the end I was on the edge of my seat. I’m disappointed with the outcome, but you guys should be proud of what the team accomplished. There’s no shame losing this one, though I’m gonna have to respectfully disagree with it being the most exciting Super Bowl – nothing will ever top last year for me, but I think for most casual fans it would be splitting hairs asking them to choose between the last two. All football fans should be happy that we’ve gotten to watch back-to-back incredible Super Bowls. Hopefully whoever is there next year can keep it up.

by cjmulrain on Feb 1, 2009 9:52 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

oh

and I would trade my liver for Larry Fitzgerald to be on the Giants. That guy is an absolute monster. I hope you guys get a bunch of national games next year, just so I can watch him play.

Yeah, one of the regular posters

at Purple Row was remarking that, although not being a Cardinals fan, she didn’t realize how invested she was in the game until she found herself getting angry when the Steelers scored.

Congrats

on a great season… As everyone has already said you have a lot to be proud of. Enough is enough with people treating this team as the underdog… Even though a lot of your guys don’t seem to mind it and even embraced it, its pretty clear this team has the talent to play with and beat any team in the NFL. If not for one play the Cards would be champs. Keep your heads up and once again be proud, you had a great season and you have a bright future. Maybe after this your team walks into next season with the swagger to win it all!

Great game and season, Birds

I’m a 49er fan, but today I was a Cardinal fan and was wearing my old school Phoenix Cardinals hat all day and was rooting hard for your boys. You not only had a great season, but I’d say that your franchise has officially been turned around and I welcome the divisional competition for years to come. You all have a lot to be proud of.

Dolphins fan here.

I just wanted to drop in and congratulate you guys on an amazing season. And a big thanks for a truly remarkable Super Bowl. I was pulling for the Cards all postseason (after the Fins got the boot, of course) and was disappointed in the outcome, too. I know I have no idea what it’s like to lose a Super Bowl like that, after coming from behind like you did, but you guys have nothing to hang your heads about.

Oh – and if I give sell you my soul, can you guys send either Fitz or Q to Miami? I’d really appreciate it! lol

Congrats again, guys. And thanks for a tremendous game!

So very close, but still happy

We may have lost, but I cant be mad about it. Because finally the Cards are legitamit, finally they are no longer the doormat of the league. Victory would have been amazing, but to have gone so far when all doubted us makes it a victory in my mind.

Now all that needs to be done is keep this team in contention.

Another Steeler fan here.

Hey guys, it already seems that most of you don’t feel too down about losing tonight, I know what it’s like to follow a pathetic loser of a team that can’t seem to get anything right (that pro baseball team across the parking lot from the Steelers). You guys have been there before, I’m there now. The Cardinals are much more amazing than I expected them to be. I mean they’re just damn incredible and I can’t imagine them not winning 10+ games and making the playoffs next year. Maybe we can all meet up again for Super Bowl XLIV! Unlike some of the recent Super Bowl losers, this team has a real future ahead of it.

Also, for what it’s worth, I like you guys a lot more than St. Louis Cardinals fans.

I'm even more disappointed after trying to sleep on this loss.

After the game, I was okay with the loss and was proud of the season [see first post in the thread] but then something came over me while trying to shut my eyes and get on with counting sheep: a game that exciting should not have come down to a Steeler QB taking a knee.

I would like to see game film on just who was downfield and what the coverage looked like as Kurt was trying to uncork the last pass that would have, no doubt, ate up the remaining seconds on the gameclock. Catch, drop, or pick, that game deserved a hail mary ending that it never got; I’m just wondering who would have likely been involved. The ending that wasn’t could possibly be crudely re-created by checking the arm position, direction of Kurt’s look, and what the player confirgurement was like down toward the endzone. Dropped pass or not, I cannot help but fantasize Fitgerald jumping in the air and attempting to pull down the ball near (or in) the endzone. With Larry, I honestly believe that he just wills plays to happen — it’s as if he just wants it more than anyone else on the field and is determined to get it done [whatever IT just happens to be].

So, does anybody have any idea where the ball was headed and what the situation was downfield. I mean, heck, I know it looks like I’m into torturing myself by examining something that is pointless to examine but I just cannot help thinking that Kurt didn’t see some kind of opportunity as he made the decision to let ’re rip instead of tossing one out of bounds to stop the clock.

Welp

Not much to say at this point. We had a great ride and it was definitely disheartening to lose, but that was a great 4th quarter. I could have done without the game long fellatio of Big Ben by Madden, but all-in-all it was an enjoyable experience.

It’s time to get the countdown to training camp going here on RotB.

Congrats on the game guys

Your team played great football, and you should be proud of what they did this year. I’m sure you guys will contend again next year, you are clearly the class of that division.

Good luck, and good game.
