2009 Arizona Cardinals to Feature Two Offensive Coordinators
As reported by Darren Urban of AZcardinals.com, Coach Whisenhunt has announced that the 2009 offense will feature two coordinators. Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line Coach Russ Grimm will be promoted to Run Game Coordinator, and Wide Receivers Coach Mike Miller will be the Passing Game Coordinator. It is assumed at this time that Whiz will go back to being the lead play caller on game days.
Along with his new duties, it has also been reported that Grimm will continue to coach the offensive line. So for those of you keeping track, he will now be titled "Assistant Head Coach/Running Game Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach", so I expect you all to address him as such. :-)
In addition, in house Defensive Quality Control Coach Matt Raich has been promoted to Linebackers coach to replace the spot vacated by new DC Bill Davis. Two outside hires were also made, including former NFL quarterback Chris Miller to replace Rutledge at quarterbacks coach, and former Rutgers Offensive Coordinator/quarterbacks coach John McNulty will replace Mike Miller as wide receivers coach.
So, what do you fellow ROTBers think of the joint coordinator move? Has anyone ever know this to be done, and do you think Whiz should go back to calling plays?
Update: After some research, the Cowboys actually went with the running game coordinator/passing game coordinator combo during the Parcell's Era. In fact, our very own (former Offensive Coordinator) Todd Haley was the wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator for three seasons in Dallas. It looks like the Cardinals could be grooming Miller to be their 'OC of the future.'

Sounds brilliant
Grimm had done fantastic all year with the o-line and with him looking over the running game as well, he could make the running game much more efficient. Having the wide-receivers coach as coordinator of the passing game makes sense as well.

Grimm
has certainly been associated with some great running teams in the Steelers and Redskins…

My vote doesn't really count but.............
I can’t help but wonder what Kurt W.’s vote will be?

I'm on the fence
Until Kurt signs! Really tough to predict what USC (I always drink liquids outta a gravity bong) Matt would be able to do. Add that to uncertaintity at RB and this is just a plain tough question at this point.

I have reservations...
…on this concept. It’s kinda “old-school” in that I Whisenhunt will likely call “run”, Grimm gives him a multiple choice option, and Whiz goes with a play. On obvious passing downs Miller makes some suggestions and Whisenhunt picks one. I worry about the amount of time this all takes on the sidelines and getting the plays in quick enough, especially if Warner is under center and needing his time for pre-snap reads. Delay of game penalties could be all too common. Then again, if Warner is taking the snaps let him call the plays on the field and go truly “old-school”.
The reality is Whisenhunt will be calling the plays again but Grimm/Miller will be doing all the preparation work during the week. During the frequent TV timeouts they’ll powwow but while the play clock is running Whis ought to be doing 80% of the play calls.

There will only be one person calling plays...
I think it’s a great idea from a former lineman myself. Nobody has a better comprehension of the run blocking schemes than the oline coach and it will be great having the o-line and rb completely on the same page.
All the different coaches will contribute to will be game planning and I seriously doubt they all will be shouting out plays on the sidelines. I see more of Warner and Whis making the play calls than anyone.
Who would win in a fight, Whisenhunt or a Hurricane?
Hold on, hold on, what if the Hurricanes name was Whisenhunt?

I'd much rather have an in house staff that was part of the winning formula...
than somebody else coming in and trying to mess with what works!

I also don't think there over thinking anything...
There will still be another RB coach to work on fundamentals and Grimm will still work with the line. All it is going to effect is our gameplanning.
I think all of you are over thinking this!!!

probably just a one year deal
It sounds like Miller is following the Haley career path and I bet he’s named the full-fledged OC next season and he might even take over play calling duties.
I’m more concerned about the defense though. They’re still saying that they’re going to use some ‘hybrid’ sets instead of going all out 3-4. Maybe I’m just ‘hybrid-ed’ out but I’m ready to run a regular defense set.

I don’t see our offense taking too many steps backwards as long the O-line stays healthy. Miller would be my expected OC for next year as well. Adding Grimm’s name muddles things a bit; another strong season and Grimm will likely be a head coach in ’10 anyways.
The defense is where this team stands to make the best improvements and picking one formation over another is a step in the right direction. 3-4 is in vogue again so let’s get it done. As long as we have some diversity on the roster the 4-3 can be in the game plan when it’s an advantage.

to both of you and I totally think that this is just something among friends to add to Grimm’s resume` to prepare him for a HC job in ‘10. Miller will definitely take over OC full time in ’10. We also shouldn’t lose much momentum from this year. A win, win for all parties.

A matter of terminology
I’m more concerned about the defense though. They’re still saying that they’re going to use some ‘hybrid’ sets instead of going all out 3-4. Maybe I’m just ‘hybrid-ed’ out but I’m ready to run a regular defense set.
Every modern 3-4 system uses 4-3 formations, and 4-3 systems use 3-4 formations. It’s just a question of the proportions and personnel. Splitting defensive sets closely into 50-50 3-4 and 4-3 formations might give the D the advantage of unpredictability and flexibility — and I have no doubt that Dockett can be a dominant 3-4 NT.
If the Cards draft a tweener in the ’09 draft, that should help clear up the ambiguity.

Dockett
I think NT would be a waste of his talent, move him to end in the 3-4.

6'4 290lbs
and you want him to play as a 3-4 DE?

yes.
although he’s a great athlete that will command double teams, he is way to small to play 3-4 tackle. Robinson is 15 lbs heavier and was still too small.

Well
I think he’s still too slight to play 3-4 DE — I may be wrong, but that’s my sense.
