Official ROTB Free Agency Open Thread

News is coming fast and furious but unfortunately I can't find the Arizona Cardinals linked to a single free agent. I haven't heard of a single player coming to Arizona for a visit or any offers that are on the table. All the other news including Bart Scott, Derrick Ward and many others are after the jump.....

Any Cardinals related news (other than waving bye-bye to JJ, oh wait, there's a snag?!) will be here on the front page.

  • Update #1: Bryant McFadden's first visit of free agnecy will be to AZ.  He'd be a significant upgrade to the secondary. Here's what we said about him a week or so ago. A rumour that there are two Steelers visiting instead of just McFadden is floating out there.
  • Update #2:  Antonio Smith has signed with the Houston Texans.  It's a five year deal worth $35 million of which $12.5 million is "sure money".  Thanks for the years of service, Antonio.  See you back at UoP with the Texans this upcoming season.

Star-divide

  • The Redskins broke the bank for Albert Haynesworth and DeAngelo Hall (thoughts DbacksSkins?).
  •  The Jets picked up Bart Scott for a pretty penny ($8 per season) and are hot on the trail of fellow ex-Raven DB Corey Ivy.
  • The Pats took a couple of older veterans off the market by signing Fred Taylor and Chris Baker (TE).
  • The Rams seem to be the front runner for Jason Brown, the top interior lineman of the free agent class.
  • The Texans retained the services of defensive back Eugene Wilson.
  • The Eagles opened the purse strings for former Bengal offensive tackle Stacy Andrews.
  • The Titans lock up their venerable QB Collins for two years at $15 million.
  • The Browns traded Kellen Winslow to Tampa Bay for undisclosed draft picks.
  • The Ravens signed Dominique Foxworth to a four-year, $28 million deal that includes $16.5 million guaranteed (That's somewhat significant to the Cardinals b/c it sets the market for top-flight corners, if they're serious about McFadden.)
  • Todd Haley has acquired his first player as Chiefs' head coach and it's Mike Vrabel, formerly of the New England Patriots. Have fun with him Pendy.
  • The Eagles finally find a home for Lito Sheppard with the NY Jets.
  • The Rams and Jason Brown have agreed upon a five-year contract.
  • The Redskins welcome back Derrick Dockery after Bills released him.
  • Arizona East?  I think not.  Try New England West as the Chiefs trade for Matt Cassel.
  • Broncos free agent "all you can sign buffet" continues with Brian Dawkins, Andra Davis, and Darrell Reid.  Broncos...Redskins West?
  • The Cowboys replace a fomer London Monarch with a former Barcelona Dragon in rare player-for-player trade.  Keith Brooking joins Jones' circus as well.
  • Former Cardinal Bryant Johnson has signed with the Detroit Lions, whom we play in 2009.
  • Rocky Bernard will now be plugging the A-gap for the GiantsChris Canty also signs giving New York an even stronger defensive prescence.

This is your forum to cuss and discuss any and all free agent news. As new signings happen, leave a comment and we'll add them to the story.

Scott & Brown

I thought we would at least bring in either Bart Scott or Jason Brown. What are we doing to get better? The offseason kills me every year! Go out and at least TRY! I am really concerned about next year. Probably no Smith, and an aging d-line, average o-line with an old LT. They need to go after Jason Brown and especially if someone in the NFC West is trying to pull him.

The Vikings traded a 4th round pick for Sage Rosenfels..

Then gave him a contract extension for 2 years worth $9 million.

I was just thinking, Bert should be cheap and it would keep some of the blocks in place.

Still plenty of miles on that body...

J Brown doesnt want to play for Rams according to Sporting News:
The good news for center/guard Jason Brown is that the St. Louis Rams are willing to pay him $7 million per year.

The bad news for center/guard Jason Brown is that no one else is.

A league source tells ProFootballTalk.com that Brown doesn’t want to play for the Rams, and thus wants someone/anyone to step up and match the offer St. Louis has made to him.

by sc464 on Feb 27, 2009 3:31 PM MST reply actions

this sounds(and looks)

a lot like what the baseball Cardinals did, or didn’t do, during the off-season. Their mantra all winter long was sign the “low-hanging fruit”, AKA mediocre(at best) FA, and they’ve even failed to follow through on that, for the most part. Once again, it seems like the “big names” are steering clear of Glendale. I guess your reputation does preceed you, afterall.

Denver Broncos add two more.

This is Hawkwind. Do Not Panic.

The Cardinals have not been prone to first day signings in FA in recent years because historically those signings have been stinkers. Graves will let the feeding frenzy settle down and make smart decisions soon enough. Those who “win” today are not assured of any success in the regular season. Shooting wads of cash at FAs like cheap hookers is instant gratifcation for a fanbase desparate for change. The Cardinals are not in that situation for two years running and last year’s results seemed to have worked out well enough. Remember, the Cards didn’t sign anyone early last time with LaBoy being the first one a week later. Warner signed a week into FA in ‘05. It’s all good.

No worries on Arrington, he’s very replaceable.

No worries on Warner. Collins signs for $15 M, so $20 M isn’t so bad. A deal will happen, the market just has to show the Cardinals are being reasonable.

Smith is talking to the Texans? No worries. Calais is ready to go. Kenny too. FA is just starting and the draft is yet to come.

This is Hawkwind. Do Not Panic.

by Hawkwind on Feb 27, 2009 6:15 PM MST reply actions

Kerry Collins isn't Kurt Warner but...

…two years at $15 million, $8.5 gauranteed seems reasonable considering the parallels between the Titans’ QB situation and the Cardinals’ (Young and Leinart). Kurt deserves more money considering what he did for the team last season (and the year before) and $20 million for two years seems a reasonable adjustment compared to Collins. I’m thinking Warner’s agent thinks the Cards would have franchised Kurt if Dansby had a long-term deal signed last summer. I don’t think they would have.

Holy Hell...Cassel to KC

The Pats must feel good about Brady. I just don’t know about making that trade now if you are NE.

by Red Reign on Feb 28, 2009 12:28 PM MST reply actions

For a second round pick too.. with Vrabel

First and foremost, in the Pats’ eyes Vrabel is obviously done, so lets assume that. Lets also assume Brady is back with a vengeance.

Two reasons why the Pats gave the Chiefs such a good deal:

1. They’ve seen Cassel play around poorer players than the Pats’ starting O (ie running with the 2nd string for the last few camps/years of practice) and know that he’s a product of their system. Plus they trust O Connell to be a servicable backup for similar reasons.

2. They franchised Cassel as they thought that there would be a frenzy of interest for his services from desperate teams such as the Chiefs, Lions and Vikes. Lions are drafting a qb, vikes got Rosenchoppa, so it was either deal him on the cheap, or keep him on the not so cheap.

Im inclined to believe #1, solely because I cant imagine the Pats ever making a personnel mistake as espoused in option 2.

Apparently there's some wording in the contract that didn't "fly"...

…with the NFLPA. But that’s my pure speculation. Anyways, the wording is such that it nulls the contract and effectively JJ would need to sign a new contract. That may not happen though since Denver is looking to bring Ward in for a face-to-face. So JJ could be left at the altar.

3 FREE AGENTS TO VISIT

D. Urban is saying that the cards will have 3 FA’s coming in today to visit. I imagine 1 is McFadden, who are the other 2?

Anybody know much about Andra Davis??

by sc464 on Mar 2, 2009 8:17 AM MST reply actions

Signed with Denver Saturday

His write-up from the 12th’s outside linebacker article:

Andra Davis: He gets very little pub because he’s played his entire career in the wasteland known as Cleveland, but he’s got experience in the 3-4 and he’s been productive. He’ll turn 31 in December and he racked up 90 tackles and a pick in 2008. He’s not much of a pass rusher (8.5 sacks in 7 seasons) but he can find the guy with the football (three season over 100 tackles and two seasons over 130).

Time dilation.

There’s always been a lot of speed in Oakland — indeed, sometimes, that’s all they do; they have no actual game plan, but their guys are told to indiscriminately run around.

If you’ve got any training in Einstein’s theory of General Relativity, you’ll understand that this is obviously time dilation….
