What About that Other Guy?
[Note by Hawkwind, 03/01/09 1:54 PM PST ] First off, welcome to RotB, BH. While the Warner FA Drama plays out, BH offers some thoughts some of us have already paralleled. So...what abot that "other" guy?
Please pardon my learning curve, but with all the money the Cardinals paid to get Matt Leinart, what's up with that option? Warner got the Cards through a great season, but he's 38 years old, for crying out loud. Paying him 14.5 million dollars and blowing the cap is crazy. At some point, that other guy has to start performing. He was a great player in college and he's got skills. Now that the Cardinals have the attention of the entire league and all the fans of the NFL, they should capitalize on their grab of Matt Leinart.

There's no guarantee Kurt Warner is going to take them to another Super Bowl. They squeaked past an inattentive Philadelphia Eagles team that should have and could have beat them. They almost lucked out against Pittsburgh after their gross error of not opting for offense at the start of the game. None of their post season play mandates a blank check for a 38 year-old, injury-prone quarterback..
The Cardinals need to build a running game and find a defensive agenda to support the growth of their young QB, Matt Leinart. I said the same thing years back when Eli Manning was being shadowed by uh.. oh yeah... Kurt Warner in NYC. Give the young guy a chance to gel and develop and you have a long future of post-season shots at the title.

If it isn't to be with Warner, then I say give the kid a one year shot.
If not, draft a nice replacement.

if its not warner
then i say trade boldin for draft picks. if we could get a deal like the dallas one. that would enable us to sign a couple players and draft maybe a good tight end and get a running game going.

It's a tough decision.
I always feel that we need to build a balance on the offence but if you don’t give Warner the money can we say that this 10 million plus will get the players required.
Warner deserves the money and has proven he can lead this team to within 35 seconds of a Lombardi trophy so I hope he comes back and does it again.

I say trade Q to Detroit for a 2nd and two 3rds. Financially no one wants a 1st rounder. Contracts are too big. Value is in the 2nd round. There can be only 32 1st rounders, but out of 300+ schools (all divisions included) there has to be more than 32 1st round quality players.

False — by definition.
But I’m just nitpicking with your wording. Agreed, otherwise.

It made sense to me.
Rounds are overrated… If there wasn’t rounds and just picks, there wouldn’t be big fusses and surprises. But the first round is what everybody watches and makes the 5 hour first round somewhat interesting.

Well,
all I meant was that there are only 32 first round picks, so by definition, there are only 32 guys that are “first round quality”. Are there guys who go in the 2nd who might have gone in the 1st? Of course. Like I said, it’s really nitpicking more than anything else.

I find it amazing that we we're even talking about Warner leaving honestly...
It seems like yesterday that it all seemed like it was in the bag, but now it seems like we’re just waiting for the shoe to drop and plant the future of this team on Leinart.

It's still
just a question of money, I think.

The title of this
makes me laugh.
When was the last time Matt Leinart was ever referred to as “that Other Guy”?

Yeah
He probably gets the most exposure out of all of the back up quarterbacks.

blah blah blah
The eagles should have won, the panthers didnt play well, the steelers let them come back but controlled the game. Blah blah blah. The Cards BEAT ALL OF THEM! Even the Steelers. Look at the game agin. The Steelers didn’t even score a single TD. A no catch and a leg on the ground. Not to mention the Holding, cliping and other non calls and bad calls. Oh and the 5 seconds left in the game that were never played. I emailed NFL films wit the picture of what some call the greatest catch in Super Bowl history. The picture shows the right toe not on the turf. The front picture show that if both toes had been in, then his right foot would be 3 inches longer than his left. NFL Films emailed back. “Thank you for your email but you wont see the film clip of the catch any more. But officially we just film the games.” They even know it. So blah blah blah, keep saying how bad the Cards are, it only shows how good the Cards are. People have to beat them up because they can’t fathom being beaten by them.

The team back together
Sign Warner. 2 million back to Q! Why not? Trade Q and you will not get value back. What type of luck would the Cards have to have to get back as much talent as Q. How many number 1 picks has Detroit used and only got 1. Now lets get a solid RB in free agency and then draft another. Three front with Hightower as the 3rd down guy. Spread out Q, Fitz and Breaston. I’d like Bo Scaife, but I doubt that will happen. Then go get another DE or LB and get it done ALL the way and don’t let the refs take it from us.

Warner was a Cardinal first. Green wasn’t patient for McCown or Warner and Leinart fell to #10 so why not? Green wasn’t patient once again with Warner and threw Leinart in for trail by fire. Leinart gets hurt and Warner takes off. Ride this bird until his tail feathers fall off.
