Dennis Green Returns to Professional Football!?!?
Dennis "that's why we took the damn field" Green is returning to professional football (notice I didn't say the NFL) as a head coach. He'll coach the San Francisco franchise of the start-up league known as the United Football League. The UFL will have just four teams but all four with have former NFL head coaches with Ted Cotrell, Jim Haslett and Jim Fassel joining Green.
The UFL, according to their site with play on Thursday and Friday nights in the fall and their games will be on the VERSUS network.

Hmmm...
LeRon McCoy may have a job this fall with Denny then.
An October through Thanksgiving schedule makes it ideal for a “farm” league of the NFL, but it doesn’t satisfy my Spring football fix. Expect the UFL camps to start the week after the final NFL cuts and practice squads are set. The league may hurt the PS around the NFL if they pay more.
With the AFL suspending operations this year I’m surprised individuals think there’s an opportunity for another start-up professional league. Their market choices make sense (Vegas, LA, Orlando, Hartford) but trying to tap into SF and NY in the fall may be near impossible. Having a TV contract means they’ll likely go a season but this could be another XFL “one & done” league.

yea I have no idea how they expect to have any long term success
they do seem like they’re making a point to say “we’re not competing with the NFL,” which is probably smart. You’re probably right though, at the very best, they’re going to be a practice squad farm for the NFL (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing). The NFL is the only major sport that doesn’t have some form of minor leagues or developmental league, but who knows what they’re long term future is though.
On a site note, is it bad for hockey that their network picked up this ‘fringe’ league? Not that the two are competing but it might hurt their credibility as they try to recover from their work stoppage.
I didn’t think Versus was owned by the NHL. I have a NHL Network on DirecTV (channel 214 I think) which is mimicking the NFL Channel concept. MLB has a network too now. Anyone watch programming on Versus enough to clarify?

no you are correct
I didn’t mean that they were exclusively on Versus but I think (at least before NHL Network), they were almost exclusively on Versus with the exception of their playoffs and maybe that rare outdoor game. I’m probably the last person that should be trying to talk hockey but I think that is correct or at least was at one time.
VS is channel 603 on Directv I think.
And there’s a lot of WEC cage fighting on that channel when I pass through it. I’m a UFC guy so it doesnt appeal to me.
Hey, hey, hey hey hey, watch the language, ok? I have a family.
Revenge of the Birds
What a joke. UFL? XFL? WFL? USFL? Farm system maybe, doomed to failure more like it. For a “farm” league to succeed it needs to be in hot football markets with smaller stadiums that will fill up easily and inexpensively. San Antonio, Birmingham, Memphis, Columbus and Sacramento come to mind. Orlando is good. Hartford? Vegas? Not sure about that. New York and San Francisco I suppose are requirements to be “legitimate”.
yea the markets are.....eh....at best
If you go to their website, they have two cities listed as ‘future’ sites and one is in Mexico so that would be interesting.
Odd as 'ell
I checked the UFL site just a moment ago and reading their Market data and literally “Sacramento” popped up as a market choice. Someone from UFL must be reading RotB or Cardinal_Fang has connections.
