Arizona Cardinals News/Rumor: Ravens Make an Offer for Anquan Boldin

According to various, unsubstantiated reports (notice this is in the rumor section), the Ravens have made an offer to the Arizona Cardinals for Anquan Boldin. According to John Clayton of ESPN, the offer is the Ravens first round pick and Todd Heap. Heap is a 29 year old tight end who has been a Pro Bowl level tight end when healthy in the past. The Cardinals will likely have to decide if Todd Heap is the player who caught 148 balls for 1,620 yards and 13 TDs between 2005 & 2006 or the guy who caught just 35 passes in 2008. He missed 10 games in 2007 but has played a full season in three of the past four seasons. Heap would immediately become the Cardinals starting tight end but it'll be up to the Cardinals front office to decide if Heap can be productive over the next three seasons. He's under contract until the end of the 2011 season but his cap charges might make the Cadinals think twice ($6.37, $6.67 and $7.37 million respectively). Those cap number might be another reason why the Raves are trying to move the tight end.

There hasn't been any official word from either the Cardianls or Ravens but this is a story that we'll update as soon as more is avaliable.

Yes, yes and HELL YES!

Heap an ASU boy and we’d get a number 1 pick, sign on the dotted line. I like this a lot.

wow, heap has some crazy cap numbers

Can we renegotiate with him and cut them in half? lol

This is a tough one b/c it all boils down to this: would you send the Ravens a third round pick for Todd Heap?

If the asking price is a 1 and 3, that’s the question that’s got to be answered. I’m torn but at least for now I’d wait to see if any other better offers came in.

That's what I was including in my evaluation...

I like the deal because when Heap is healthy, he is in the top five TE’s in the league. I do agree after looking at his cap numbers, they need to be restructured.

yeah but you wont be paying a 3rd round pick what we would have to pay Heap

so it doesnt balance out that way. Plus how many freaking TE’s would we have?? Heap, Spach, Becht, Pope, Patrick, am I missing anybody?? If they could for sure trade Pope for a 4th or 5th rounder then maybe. Most teams carry 3 tight ends some even 2,.

Never do card tricks for the group you play poker with.

by sc464 on Apr 22, 2009 1:48 PM MDT up reply actions

didn't count Shor

but he’ll be cut regardless of who is drafted and/or traded for. Spach probably starts the season on the PUP list and every other tight end (Becht, Patrick and Pope) will be some form of free agent after the season so it’s not like it’s a big loss to cut any of those guys.

by Bezekira on Apr 22, 2009 1:51 PM MDT up reply actions

Aaargh....

Heap is not the player he was and his current contract is way to heavy (that’s 2X what Boldin will make in his current contract). I think the right price for Boldin is three picks (e.g., 1st, 3rd, 6th). Heap would be, however, a good add to a deal that includes mutliple picks…so add in a 3rd rounder and it’s do-able (and I like that the Ravens are in the AFC). The Cards have all the leverage here and should hold out for a sweet deal.

Thats one pricey TE. Is Spach going to be good to go next year? ACL takes a while to rehab.

When I first read the article Hawk hadn't updated cap info.

That is pretty pricey, recant my former statement. Only bring him in if he takes a pay cut.

new contract info

I just read somewhere that if Heap is traded (and this is the same with Q) that the player’s former team is responsible for all of his bonus money. That means that Heap’s cap values are much more manageable:

2009: $3.6 million, 2010: $4 million, 2011: $4.6 million

Those are much better numbers to deal with.

by Bezekira on Apr 22, 2009 1:52 PM MDT reply actions

I don't think it works quite like that

the bonuses just don’t follow a player when he’s traded and I think the uncapped year (or possibility of) means that all of the bonus money owed to a player either cut or traded is accelerated as dead money under this year’s cap.

that’s the way I understand it but, my last name isn’t ‘salary cap’ or anything

by Bezekira on Apr 22, 2009 2:16 PM MDT up reply actions

This is a tough one

If he returned to full form it would be a solid addition to the offense. But if he was unproductive as he’s been, a 3rd round pick and Spach would be good enough for me. Two 1st rounders does sound good though. I guess we’ll just have to see how this plays out.

Heap's cap number

If Baltimore trades Heap, they’ll have to accelerate the remainder of Heap’s signing bonus and take it as dead money this year: roughly 7 million. That is a lot of dead money for Baltimore to swallow so this rumor is highly quesitonable. Assuming its true, Heap is due 3.6 million this year in salary and Boldin is due 2.75 so the deal would result in a 1 million dollar increase to salary and a one million dollar net cap hit.

Personally, I’d like to see the Cardinals get a deal done with Q. But if that is not going to happen, they need to get something valuable for him. Heap has no value anymore. He is constantly hurt and past his prime.

Plus, the Cardinals need a running back in the first round. There are two premium backs in this draft: Bennie Wells and Moreno. Both will be gone before Baltimore’s first round pick. The Cardinals need to move ahead of Philly or trade with Philly. The deal must get done with the Jets (pick 17) or Philly (pick 21). I would rather have pick 17 than have Baltimore’s first and third round pick.

BOLDIN AIN'T GETTING TRADED THIS YEAR.....

WHY ON EARTH WOULD THE BIG RED TRADE THIS GUY WITH TWO YEARS LEFT ON HIS DEAL? 10-15 YEARS AGO MAYBE BUT NOT NOW! THEY WILL TRADE HIM IF THEY GET A KINGS RANSOME BUT I REALLY DON’T SEE THAT HAPPENING! ALSO TRADING FOR HEAP WOULD BE ACCEPTING ANOTHER TEAMS JUNK! HE’S A PRIMA DONNA AND WOULDN’T BE A GOOD FIT HERE! IF HE’S SO GOOD WHY DID THE RAVENS SIGN LJ SMITH WHO IN MY OPINION IS AVERAGE TO SLIGHTLY ABOVE AVG.? PATRICK HAS POTENTIAL AND I WANT TO SEE WHAT HE DOES THIS YEAR!

I concur

we have the best #2 WR in the game signed for 2 years for mad cheap. It wouldn’t make sense to move him THIS YEAR, unless the offer was fantastic!

by CardsDefense on Apr 23, 2009 12:56 PM MDT up reply actions

Going off

the primary subject but it is still related. The Baltimore deal will not work as Newsome isn’t going to budge his draft picks and is trying to unload some end of career, mediocre players in a deal. We don’t need another TE or weak RB thrown into Arizona. So getting off of Baltimore and I am going to say that the Titans will pick up Boldin. (Yes, I know this was another huge post but I am putting this here anyways.) They don’t need that much on their team besides a DT, OT and LBs. They have a crazy amount of draft picks to give up the 1 and 3 rounds and still have 8 picks left. It is a deal that works out.

by kj197728 on Apr 23, 2009 6:47 PM MDT reply actions

Well instead of a 1st pick

how about Heap and Leron McLain? I also hear they aren’t happy with Willis McGahee so how about Heap and McGahee for Boldin? Although I want Boldin back at all costs he shouldn’t be able to mess with the teams future and keep causing everyone to second guess whether he will be back or not when his deal runs out. Get somebody productive for him while you still can because he will probably bolt when his contract his up.

AZ should make the deal!

…and I’m not just saying that because I’m a Ravens fan.

Heap’s bad numbers from last year are because coach Harbaugh used him primarily as a blocking tight end (because we were lacking an adequate OT). Heap is a receiving TE and his numbers of old prove it.

He is healthy and I have no doubt he would produce those numbers again in the right system…AZ has that system with KW under center! Baltimore will also have that system this year provided they draft an adequate ROT.

Honestly, I hope the trade doesn’t happen because Heap will be back to his old self again here in Bmore with the drafting of a “Michael Oher – like” OT.

by Bmore Dave on Apr 24, 2009 9:00 PM MDT reply actions

Give us Ed Reed and Terrelle Suggs and a 1st and we have a deal.

Yea that is ludicris along with all the other trade options posted. None of Bmore’s available players are worth our supplemental pick in the 7th. NO!!! Next team please?
