Around SBN: Interview With UMD Athletic Director, Dr. Debbie Yow

Arizona Cardinals First Round '09 Pick: Chris "Beanie" Wells, RB, Ohio St.

And your first round pick in the 2009 draft is none other than Chris "Beanie" Wells.

Height & Weight: 6'1, 237 lbs.

Combine Results:497944_medium

  • 40-Yard Dash: 4.59
  • Bench Press: 25
  • Vertical Jump: 33.5
  • Broad Jump: 10'8

Positives: Wells is your ideal, large downhill runner. He has the perfect size( Upper body, arms, legs, shoulders), and speed to be dominant runner in the NFL. He has great vision and is able to burst through holes at ease. He runs through tackles with a force, and carries defenders with him. Once in the second level, he becomes even harder to bring down. He usually wins a challenge, and adds extra yardage after the first hit. Arm and leg tackles rarely bring him down. Most defenders have trouble with him because of his speed and elusiveness as well. Although he is a bull runner, he can hit the burners in the secondary, and makes more then one cut at a time. Wells is also a smart, patient player, who will adjust to new plays and formations. Wells has good leg drive, and has the best stiff arm in the draft.

Negatives: Wells doesn't have home-run type speed, and may struggle against quicker defenses. He is fit to run between the tackles, and has problems when bouncing it to the outside. Has had fumbling problems and needs to work on his ball security to keep a job in the NFL. Doesn't have any character issues on or off field, but may need to be spoiled to stay happy. His work ethic has improved, but he may still miss some workouts. He has never had to be a leader at Ohio State, and some feel this may be a larger weakness then it appears. He rarely caught the ball in college( 15 catches in 3 years) and needs to polish his route running. Has a good initial pop in pass protection, but isn't NFL ready to block big defenders.

Overview: The knock on Wells is that he isn't your typical multipurpose back. He is a straight forward runner, and dominates defenses.  Most think if he were to become a genuine leader, he would be a franchise-type running back. If he can improve his overall game and fill multiple needs, he can eventually be one of the best running backs in the league.

Cardinals DID NOT follow the Draft Principles

The number one cardinal rule (excuse the pun) in the draft is to not reach for position. This is especially true in the first round, but the principle is true all the way through the draft. When you reach for position you almost always get a bust.

The Cards have graded out all of the draft options based on football ability, thier fit into Cards scheme, and character. Need does impact the grade but not disproportionately. Last year they drafted Doucet based on grade not on need. So what might this mean at 31? A RB may not be picked in the 1st round.

Even in the most generous grading there are only three 1st-round-graded RBs in this draft. On the other hand there are 6-9 1st-round-graded DE/OLB that are projected to play OLB in a 3-4. Unless a RB of a higher grade falls to 31 the odds are that the Cards are going OLB at 31.
*****************************
This running back was a terrible choice. He used to run out of bounds in the Big Ten. We lost the Superbowl because of defense. We needed to draft Defensive Depth. Maybe the Boldin issue was too much of a distraction for the front office. Why sign Kurt Warner to a big contract if you are going to ask him to hand the ball off to this running back?? I like what Coach Wiz has done with the franchise, but this feels like a step backwards And what is with the name Beanie?

Name one player on the board at #31 that is better than Wells

he was the best guy available in both talent and need.

It’s all good. I had done exactly the same and posted it before realizing you had done the same thing 40 minutes earlier. So I deleted mine and changed the title of yours.

Disagree

Beanie Wells was not a reach at #31, and even though the ROTB mock draft had him going to us I never thought it was realistic for him to drop that far in the first. This is a great pickup, a 235 pound back who is a north and south runner, has crazy athleticism for a man his size, and has enough speed to go the distance on any given play. For as much of a screw up as it was not to get Adrian Peterson, this may be just as much of a gift to have gotten him so late.

+1, He'll be a grinder and a fore in the backfield...

Hightower and Wells are going to be a badass 1-2 punch this year. I like his size and how athletic he is more than anything. I didn’t think there would be any way he’d fall to us either. Good pick up Cards!

He will be a running back who runs with the ball after the quarterback hands it to him. He will play football with a football.

i can live with beanie

he was my 3rd choice of the top 3 rb’s but i know he can run the ball when healthy. i thought the second pick was a total reach! what are we going to do with an undersized de? maybe convert him to a rush olb but he ain’t better than what we already have! jarron gilbert would have been a much better choice here!

Brown (DE)...

was ranked as a 1st rounder on a lot of mock drafts and I’m extremely excited about a young DE/OLB that can get after the QB and he won’t be asked to deliver much this year. That was a depth/starter for next year move. He could be the next Boobs, Timmy or DRC. I love it.

Loved the Brown pick. Not a reach or a steal in my opinion. He was drafted right where he should have been.

Uuuuhhh....the guy is 20 years old....

Doesn’t turn 21 for another four months. Seems a bit of a bad rap to complain about his not being a “leader” at Ohio State. That team is loaded with top end talent, most of whom are older than Wells.

Beanie is 2 years younger than Knowshon Moreno, 20 pounds heavier, and had better college stats. He was ranked as the top RB prospect on more lists than not, and the top RB in any draft is generally taken in the top 10 picks. Calling him a “position reach” is pretty silly.

by robert ethan on Apr 25, 2009 9:21 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

As for his pass catching, the kid has 10" hands and 34" arms. Even if he was a 6’4" WR, the scouts would be raving about huge hands and long arms. Given his relative youth, I’m sure that with a little work he could turn out to be a pretty good receiver out of the backfield. Wells is a pretty awesome physical speciman. For those complaining about his 40 times, remember he was close to the size of LenDale White when he ran at the combine. Anything below 4.75 for a 240 pounder is considered fast I think.

Great pick imo

FINALLY we have someone that can run it up the gut, and tire defenses out. Our main offensive problem is that defenses know exactly what to do with us, either sit back in pass coverage, or blitz warner to through him off his game. This gives us the option of keeping them honest, and not letting the safeties and linebackers cheat back to protect the pass.

AND, think off all the draw plays that we can run…

Beanie was by far the best player on the board at #31

That’s why the saints tried to jump back into the 1st round ahead of the cards. We should all thank Jeremy Shockey for using up the saints 2nd round pick, otherwise we would not have gotten The best back in the draft at such a bargain price.

In a few years we will see!

Best back in the draft?

We got Donald Brown?!?! Awesome!

I wanted D. Brown too but...

I believe we got the best guy on the board…. and after watching more footage of Wells, I believe he will shine in the desert!

besides was there anyone better at # 31?

by CardsDefense on Apr 29, 2009 11:05 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think we got the best of both worlds here.

We drafted for need, which you shouldn’t do, but it just so happens that the need was the best player available.
