Arizona Cardinals Expected to Release Edgerrin James
The news that Edgerrin James has been waiting for since Febuary the 2nd should come sometime this week as the Arizona Cardinals are expected to release the eleven year veteran before this weekend's mini-camp. With the selections of Chris "Beanie" Wells and LaRod Stephens-Howling, the Cardinals have five running backs on the roster and another could be added as an undrafted free agent.
Edge has been up front about his desire to be released since before the season ended and the Cardinals haven't exactly said that he's part of any long term plans either. I'm sure that James will find a new home rather quickly but it'll be very interesting to see if someone hands him the starting job that he thinks he deserves. Do you think Edge is still a Cardinal by the time mini-camp opens this weekend? Where will he end up if he is released?

Extra cap space is
Most likely for the rookie contracts, although it could help in resigning Q, Wilson, Dansby, etc.
Hey, hey, hey hey hey, watch the language, ok? I have a family.

that and restructure Fitz & Warner to sign Boldin
— still would have rather traded him.

I doubt Boldin
gets resigned unless Dansby and the Cards part ways next season. Even then I wonder if this is Boldin’s last season with us.

rookie contracts
I think teams are required to set aside a certain amount of cap space for rookies each year that is based on the pics they have going into the draft. This $ should already have been accounted for when calculating the current cap room.

Edge will be missed
If (more likely when) he is released will be a sad day for me. Edge has been such a hardcore back and I for one was very excited when the Cards first signed him. I never bought into any of the negative media coverage that came last year when he was benched. He has played at a high level for much longer than most backs could ever dream of. He will be in the Hall of Fame one day and he could be a great pick up for many teams needing a back with his skills. He can still play and if given the right opportunnity will continue moving up the list of all time leading rushers.

Agreed
I really wish he would have changed his mind after we gave him his starting position back in the playoffs but he never did. At least we got a good back in Wells that could be a franchise back to replace him.

I feel a little bit sorry for Edge
Edge was, and remains a consumate professional. From living on the facility during the season to his conduct when unfairly benched, he has made a huge impression on me. The organisation has ruined his chances of finding a landing spot by refusing to cut him before the draft, and he has not uttered a word. The man has also lived through an horrific tragedy recently, which has not received a jot of coverage in the media apart from a footnote by Darren Urban. Conversely, Anquan Boldin’s whining has occupied a veritable team of reporters. Edge is worthy of Canton, but I fear that he hasnt run his mouth enough, or broken enough 70 yard runs to make it. I hope that he finds a team that want a proven veteran and a great leader, and wish him all the best.
If anything, this whole situation has proven that the more noise you make in this league as a star, the better treatment you will get.

Well said
I think Edge is a shoe in for Canton, and his stats alone can prove that. But factor in his production, the footage showing his dedication, as well as the story behind his benching and then retaking the starting role to take the Cardinals to the SB. I think that’s the icing on the cake.
Side note, even though Indy picked Brown, what do you think the chances of Edge ending back up with the Colts is?

that might be up to Edge
Will he want to go to the Colts and be the second or third back or will he go to a team where he’ll get more immediate playing time.

From the way he reacted
to being a number 2 or sometimes even number 3 I would say he wants to be the one carrying the load. I can’t see him getting this from any team but I have been surprised before. I bet he ends up with the saints being the number 2 back or with the Pats.
