Francisco? Ware? Adams? Who will make the final 53

Seems odd to be thinking about the final 53 when it isn't even May yet but that is what happens after the draft. Here is my best assessment.

By my estimation there are 47 players that will be on the roster for sure.  The number is more important than the names but I wanted to show who I was counting:

5 Receivers: Fitzgerald, Boldin, Breaston, Urban, Doucet

4 TE: Spach, Becht, Patrick, Pope

3 QB: Warner, Leinart, St Pierre

8OL: L. Brown, E. Brown, Lutui, Keith, Sendlein, Wells, Gandy, Vallejo

4 RB: Hightower, Wright,  Wells, Kreider (notice I did not include Castille),

6DL: Dockett, Robinson, Watson, Branch, Campbell, Iwebema

2 ILB: Dansby, Hayes

4 OLB: Berry, C. Brown, Okeafar, Haggans

4 Corners: DRC, McFadden, Toler, R. Brown

4 Safetys: Wilson, Lewis, Johnson, Rolle

3 ST: Rackers, Leach, Graham

=47

2 more ILB as depth (Highsmith, Togafau, Hobson or whoever)= 49

Back up Center= 50

1 more DL (Maybe Dykes) =51

That leaves you 2 spots.

Do you keep one of the two return specialists we brought in? Do you add Long or Morey as receiver?  Do you keep W. Davis as OLB?  Do you keep H. Johnson?  Do you include Castille?  Or do you keep an extra corner or safety?

I think that Francisco, Ware, and Adams are all gone.  But suppose you could keep one of the three which would it be?

If I were to keep 1 of these 3 I would keep Francisco.  Adams is ok as corner but he is really a special teams player.  Francisco is a better special teams player.  Ware plays safety well but he is not strong in open field tackles where Francisco does better.  Many note that Francisco does not do well covering burners deep.  I agree.  If he is on the field, I put him up closer and allow Johnson to play deep.  Others note that he lost the Super Bowl because he blew his assignments.  If you watch the game again you see it wasn't Francisco who blew the coverage.  He was actually coming to try and help others.  DRC and R. Brown were out of position in a couple of the zone coverage break downs in the last few minutes.  Francisco did not blow any of his assignments in those last 2 minutes.

That said I am sure we will spend the summer rehashing over and over various options for the final 53 so let the fun begin:-)

Slight disagreement

Impressive list, like you said most of us (myself included) aren’t ready to start coming up with the final 53 yet. However, in looking at your list I see a few differences in how I anticipate the final roster to look (albeit minor differences).

First, I’d be surprised if they have 4 TE’s on the roster. I don’t think both Becht and Spach will be with us, my gut tells me that Becht is probably coming to camp to ensure they have both Pope and Patrick’s undivided attention. Second, I think they will keep Castille and carry two FB’s. The remaining picks will be very interesting, as I think big Herman will be a very possible addition to the squad, and I could see Will Davis there as well. But I’d be surprised if Ralph Brown isn’t, as he seems to perform pretty well as a nickel and the release of Hood seems to have saved a spot for him as I’d be surprised if they don’t carry 4 CB’s. Ware and Francisco will have their hands full with Rashad Johnson on board. In short, as the DB’s go I think the list you have is pretty accurate.

Like you said, it will open up a lot of interesting dialogue.

never too early for a look at the 53

Here’s how I’d tweak you’re ‘49’ and any positions that I don’t mention, I agree with you:

 - TE: I think they’ll start with three (Pope, Patrick, Becht) and Spach will be on the PUP. After six weeks, Spach will be activated and Whiz will make it clear to the other three that whoever is hanging from the bottom rung of the ladder is gone.

 - OL: This will end up being the best battle in camp. We assume the starters are set with Gandy, Wells, Sendlein, Lutui and Brown and there will be three backups. The problem is that there with Vallejo, Keith and E. Brown, there is no backup center and we’d probably lose Big Johnson if we tried to put him on the practice squad. Putting all that together, I’m going with Vallejo, Keith and Big Johnson as the backups but I bet we hear abunch about Wells working at center during camp (he becomes the backup).

 - ILB: I’ll agree with the four (Dansby, Hayes, Highsmith and Hobson) and Highsmith and Hobson might take some reps at OLB just in case.

 - OLB: I’m going with five because I don’t think they want to let Davis get away. At worst he’ll be nothing more than a special teams guy but they lost their sixth round pick last year (supposedly they wanted to keep him) and I don’t think they’ll risk it this year.
-———————————————————————————————————-
Ok so I added an OLB and subtracted one tight end so we’re still sitting at 49. Here are the final four:

 - I think Aaron Francisco’s spot on the roster is safe because of his special teams ability (Urban raves about him and that’s coming from somewhere).
  - With the same thought in mind, I don’t think they can cut Sean Morey after his Pro Bowl season so his spot is safe as well.

Ok so we’re down to the final two spots and there are a number of ways that we could go. Looking at needs based on this roster, we still need a kick returner but I can’t see any other major need except for backup center. The problem with that is that we don’t really have a backup center on the current roster so they may be SOL. Maybe Canfield works at center or maybe they sign one or maybe they’re ok with Wells being the backup. Either way I’d say the last two spots on the roster come down to the best KR and one pure wild card spot:

 - KR: LaRod Stephens-Holwing vs. Michael Ray Garvin
 - Wildcard: possible options include Keilen Dykes, Lance Long, Trevor Canfield, Elton Brown, Dennis Keyes or even Tim Castille

I just don't see Gandy making the cut this year.

Wells has played tackle before and gives up a lot less sacks. We have tons of guards that can take his place on the interior. That way Kurt would be better protected on his blind side. Plus, with all that $$, why won’t he get a haircut.
Not to mention his huge cap hit this year. I think he is expendable. Or maybe he and Wells just switch. He can’t be on the outside giving up all those sacks. He is just too slow. Wells moves a lot better on his feet and his hands are awesome.

I think we might be too hard on Gandy

He’s a decent tackle, certainly not great but at the very least serviceable. He gave up 6.25 sack last year which isn’t great but the Cardinals do pass more than the average team, we have a statue for a QB and the staff (for whatever reason) give him very little help. Rarely will you ever see a running back come out and chip Gandy’s man and our sad sack group of tight ends certainly didn’t offer any help. I’m not saying that I’m starting a Gandy fan club or anything but I think he’s better than we give him credit for and $5.8 million isn’t a crazy amount for a LT. I think he’s got one more year as the LT and then he’s a free agent. In 2010 it’ll either be Levi Brown moving over (and that’s only if he really progresses in his third year), Vallejo or a first round pick next year.

Oh and I don’t think Wells would make a good tackle at all. If Gandy is gone this year for whatever reason, it’ll be Vallejo that steps into the LT job.

Gandy played very well last year. He got abused in the SB, but only the elite left tackles can stop those pittsburg Lbs

+1 His pass blocking is something to be desired and his hair looks like a Chia Pet gone wrong...

Gandy

The other thing that doesn’t get enough mention is how in the playoff games against Carolina and Atlanta that we virtually never heard mention of either Peppers or Abraham, so he and Levi Brown must have done something right to have shut two of the elite NFC pass rushers down.

I think we’re all just jaded b/c he got torched in the last game that we saw him. He’s worth the money and not going anywhere.

He got burned most of the season.

I’ve been over it before and don’t feel like rehashing all of the past conversations and breakdowns, but he was by far our weekest lineman in the pass game. He was constantly having to get help from Edge and got burned several times inside throughout the season. Don’t take my word though, go back and watch a few of the regular season games and see for yourself.

Exactly!

Not every missed assignment lead to a sack, so the stats can be a little skewed, but he gave up so much, that the Kurt was always rushing passes he shouldn’t throw. He was terrible. And yes, Edge was his Savior. Did I mention we couldn’t run off tackle to the left side? I’ve been so upset with his lowsy pass protection, I forgot he couldn’t run block either. Our best runs were up the middle behind, you guessed it, Sendlein. The draws were pathetic, but when they worked, they were run up the middle. I don’t think they were ever able to run to the outside.
