Berry, who is entering his 12th season, reportedly is upset with the one-year, $1 million contract he signed this spring. Sources confirmed an earlier report by KGME-AM (910) that Berry turned down a better offer from the team because he wanted to see what was available in unrestricted free agency......Berry didn't find the offer he was seeking and returned to the Cardinals, who by then had decreased their original offer.
What?!?! So he went searching for big money and it cost him some cash, but he still signed his name to a contract. Now, less than three months later he's so unhappy with his contract that he's not showing up to OTA's. I already ranted about this once, but now we find out it's officially a contract related problem. Would I be the only one who wouldn't mind the Cardinals saying...."if you're so unhappy with your contract, we can cut you and you'd be free to find a better deal elsewhere"?

Devil's in the Proverbial Details...
What isn’t (and probably can’t) be reported is: what the Cardinals said to B-Train when he announced he was turning down the original contract in order to “test the market.”
Did the Cards issue a word of caution (i.e. “Go ahead and test the market but be aware that the orginal contract terms might not be there should you decide to remain a Cardinal.”)?
Or did the Cardinals leave Berry with the impression that the original contract would stand?
Consider, too, the possbility that, had the Cards cautioned Bertrand that the original contract would not stand, this might have been construed by Berry as “pressure tactics.”
My point – Things are not always all they seem.

very true
but no one was holding a gun to Berry’s head when he signed his name. If he’s that unhappy with his contract now, he had to have felt the same way when he signed it. And if that’s the case, why agree to the terms? It’s not like training camp was about to start and his free agent options were running dry. It was the middle of March for crying out loud.

The OTA's are voluntary for this reason
He is a veteran – I don’t really have a problem with him not being there. He doesn’t have anything to lose by missing out.
He’ll be there come training camp!

I know we’ve dance around this before but it doesn’t matter if they call it glorified tiddly winks. Coaches do not view a player missing every single OTA as no big deal, especially when they’re installing a new defense.
Maybe that’s an opinion that’s only shared by me, but that’s the way that I see it.

I know it's important to the coaches.
But I have a lot less of an issue with Berry specifically missing out than Dockett or Boldin.
Berry has taken pay cuts and done everything he could for the organisation up to now so I can forgive him this.
Plus he’s out of Notre Dame so I have to go easy on him. ;-)

no demand
The Cardinals are under no obligation to jack up anyone’s salary. B tested the waters, Their was not big demand for his services. If their were more interest, and the Cards were still interested a bidding war might ensue. If he didn’t like the terms of the deal he didn’t have to sign it. If I sign my name I honor it., I see where Q & DD are coming from, I am still not in favor of renegotiating with hold outs, but they have a little bit more of an argument of B-Train. I’m sure a younger guy would love to have a shot at his spot.

Another example of "Super Bowl-itis"
It happens every year with players from both the winning and losing teams when they get put into the national spotlight for a couple of weeks. Welcome to the Big Time, folks.

Wrong
With Berry its not a case of Super Bowl-itis. its the fact that he cut his salrary in half or more than half to stay with the team last year. Then he got “disrespect” on the open market by 31 other teams and eventually got to eat crow and sign a lesser offer with the Cards. Key is that he “got to”. Nobody forced him to sign it, it was his decision wholy. Thats why his crying ticks me off, I mean 2 MONTHS LATER? You got to be kidding me Bert!

2 MONTHS
That is the main point and irregardless of what he did earlier (he could of always been cut for cap space right?). He needs to be disciplined hard so everybody else settles down to focus on the work at hand. These are not your same old car (ds) now that there is a Whiz in the desert.

There
must have been something that was not understood with him seeking a new offer. Although I can’t believe he thinks he would get great offers from other teams. He is really on his way out after a long and somewhat productive service in the NFL. At this point in his career he should have taken the original offer and played out one more year. There are a couple of guys on the team or some rookies that will step into his spot if he doesn’t come back.

We May Be Missing Another Factor...
According to kj197728 : “…must have been something that was not understood with him seeking a new offer. Although I can’t believe he thinks he would get great offers from other teams…”
Darren Urban points out that right now it looks as though Okeafor and Haggans are going to be our starting outside guys. That cannot have sat well with B-Train.
Urban suggests additionally that Berry wiil have to come to grips with the fact that he’s playing the back nine of his career and may have to accept being used more and more in a spot role.
Sad situation that plays itself out over and over in the NFL – the aging veteran who must face the inevitable. But that’s just the way it is in the Not For Long workd of pro football. If Bertrand is upset about his pay or his position on the depth chart, his best option would be to follow Kurt Warner’s example by playing his ass off and proving everyone wrong.
(Hint – Participating in off-season conditioning and attending OTA’s couldn’t have hurt).

Greg Ellis went through the exact same thing and look where he ended up
it’s gotta be tough for guys like this but as you said, he can either show up and prove he’s better than his competition or sulk in the corner.

Berry is one of the veteran leaders of this team.
As such I would think he should be at these OTAs showing and teaching the younger players what to do on the field and what some good habits are. Berry needs to pull some pages out of Demarcus Wares book, big story on him at ESPN right now, and show some class and not miss OTAs regardless of what you feeling are about your contract or not.

What other assurances were made to him
The only way I could understand him sitting out is if the front office made assurances to him about playing time etc. If not, I think he is going about this all wrong. If you are upset that nobody valued you, step up and perform. If your upset because your second string, play like your first string. Don’t get upset about it. Considering that he was hurt quite a bit during his last contract and collected quite a bit of money, I think the cards have been more than fair.

berry berry
so unfortunate! you should have taking the first offer. Thats what happens sometimes in testing free agency markets where there is a bad economy going on! Have you not been watching the news? I believe you r due for a great season in this role if indeed you r not a starter, when the other team is tired and we need a big play on defense you will be the man!
