Around SBN: Knicks 90, Raptors 87: "Shump and Lin wouldn't let us lose."

"When you consider all the attributes, he looked like the top guy," a daily team observer said of Patrick, who tested positive for the amphetamine Adderall after taking the drug last October. "He’s got good receiving skills — he made that great TD catch in the Super Bowl — his blocking has steadily improved and he’s smart. His only problem was his inability to stay healthy."

Not sure

but I for sure will not be surprised if Byrd gets the nod in the season opener. They seem to be high on him. Then again if they really are going to use him as maybe a FB or something else as well they would be dumb to have him as the starter unless he was hands down better. Wait and see I guess.

yea good point

they seem to like him in the TE/FB hybrid role so he might take Castille’s roster spot. At least if they had Becht and Byrd in the game at the same time, they’d have some serious weight to throw around in the running game.

The 2 TE formations looked sharp last preseason...hope to see some more

Spach Maybe the Wildcard

If Byrd shows up in pads like he has in OTA I think he makes the team. His hybrid capabilities opens up a spot elsewhere. Becht seems a lock on a team that has plenty of players who can catch the ball but struggles at the point of attack at blocking. If Spach comes back healthy then I think it may be a hard sell for Patrick to convince the team to take 4 TE or to cut one of the other three if they stay healthy. However if Spach spends the first 6 games on PUP or plays but is not at 100% then Patrick may still have a chance. By the way, notice how most of us have just dismissed Pope as all but releases. If Patrick is released, the three TE in 2009 will all be players who did not start the 08 season with the Cards.

good point on Pope

I think most fans have completely written him off but I’ve been surprised by Somers and Urban going as far as listing him as the favorite now that Patrick’s out of the picture. I don’t see much use for the guy but maybe he’s showing something in practice that those guys are seeing.

I am curious about that myself.

+1

I think Spach will make it one way or the other, but I don’t think Pope will be in the final number.

I feel like I should know this but does Pope have too many games to be on the practice squad? Will he just be cut and allowed to be picked up for free by another team?

Not PS eligible.

You guys think there is any chance we could get a 5th round pick for him if he were traded to a pass heavy team or am I dreaming?

He's not worth a 5th Round pick to THIS pass heavy team, let alone the 3rd that was spent on him.

yea we'd be real lucky to get a 7th rounder if you ask me

When you think about trading him, just remember that he lost his job to three guys that we signed in the past 8 months. Two guys off the NFL scrap heap (Spach and Byrd) and another guy who look more like an OT than a TE.

My prediction if he gets cut…….he’s reunited with the coach that drafted him (Dennis Green) in the UFL.

I think he goes to KC.

Haley could use him to be a redzone target now that Gonzalez is gone. He needs his own TE of the future (which he couldn’t pull of here).

Life's too short. Be a fan. Magic, Cards and Rays! What a winning combo.
