Overrated/Underrated Stories for the Cardinals this Offseason
I'm stealing this idea from another SBN site because I think we've all been beaten to death by some stories while some other stories get swept under the rug or under reported for whatever season. I'll try to stick to the story lines related to the Cardinals.....
Over Rated- Anquan Boldin situation: I'm glad the Boldin talk has died down since the draft but I'm sure it'll get stirred back up once camp starts so I'm including it. If he shows up on time he'll have to state how he's still not happy and won't ever be happy and all the media guys will scurry to the typewriter (yes I know they don't use typewriters anymore) to pump out a story about how he needs to be traded before the season starts or he'll be a major distraction. If he doesn't show up, they'll all scurry to the write the exact same story. The bottom line is that Boldin is a Cardinal and that won't change until after this coming season if at all.
- Running Game Woes: The Cardinals couldn't run the ball last year right? Worst in the league? Oh well the offense was still amazing and we've upgraded the talent at running back. It's not like they can get any worse. Worst case scenerio is that the running game is still terrible and the offense plays to it's strengths, wich is throwing the ball 75% of the time. Go ahead, Kurt doesn't mind.
- Curses the Cardinals Face this Season: Between the Super Bowl losers curse and the Madden curse the Cardinals should be dead on the side of the road by their bye week, if you believe in all that. There is no such thing as a curse as far as I'm concerned and if the Cardinals falter this season it won't be because of a video game or a game way back in February. Every team deals with injuries and every team must over come hardships during a grueling 16 game season. The teams that deal with those bumps in the road end up playing in January. The teams that look for someone or something to blame, end up preparing for the draft in January.
- Karlos Dansby's contract: I know this is a story that we have to talk about but it's just giving me 'tired head.' We're going to money whip him to get him to stay and I get the feeling that we're all split down the middle on whether he's worth top 5 (or maybe even top 3) LB money, which is what it'll take to get him. Either way, at least this story will die in the middle of July.
Under Rated
- Gabe Watson's Knee: Color me scared to death of another season without a fully healed Watson. He had to go in for a second knee operation earlier in the off season and even though it was a minor, "clean-up", surgery you just never know how a joint on a 330 pound player is going to respond to two operations in a year's time. I know Bryan Robinson did the job last year but he's not a true 3-4 nose tackle and the middle is going to be soft if he has to play there as a starter (and I won't even mention that other guys name). If Watson isn't ready to go by the start of the season, I'm not sure we can go full-fledged 3-4.
- Michael Bidwell's Effect on the Franchise: As much as I hate to admit it, I'm no expert on the inner workings of the Cardinals front office but it just seems like to me that the franchise is turning in the right direction the more than Michael steps to the forefront. He was the spear head in the fight for a new stadium and is one of the lead guys in bringing the Super Bowl back to AZ. From some of the things I've read he's still sort of handcuffed by his dad's 'thrify' ways but the future looks pretty bright with him at the helm.
- Extension for Whiz: I'm somewhat surprised that the Cardinals haven't announced an extension for head coach Ken Whisenhunt after his success last season and I'm even more surprised that Urban or Somers haven't really mentioned it either. We are talking about the franchise's all time leader in playoff victories right? Who cares if he's got two years left, he should be locked up for the next ten.
Thoughts? What else is over rated or under rated?

Whiz extended after next year
Whiz has outperformed his contract. He is getting paid less than other coaches with less success. Sound familiar? Boldin, Dockett, etc… that is what every player says who wants a new contract. And they are usually right. We all agree that Whiz better get a new contract and better get paid, along with Grimm (if Grimm will stay). But hypocrisy does not go over well with the players. Whiz knows this and will wait until next year. And the organization knows that if they do not pay Whiz they will alienate their fan base, and gut their revenue. I am working hard to trust the organization on this one (although old habits do die hard).

Head coach <> QB?
The “Steeler Rule” that has been put forward is players will not be “eligible” to renegotiate their current contract until it’s in the final year…unless it’s the QB. Isn’t the head coach a parallel to the QB for the purposes of the “Steeler Rule”? In that case the franchise isn’t hypocritical to offer Whisenhunt a raise and extension with two years left on the current deal. Realistically, if the Cardinals race out to a 9-2 record I can see an extension happening during the season. Otherwise next spring makes sense.

Great post
I am particularly concerned with the Nose Tackle position, having seen the impact of a Casey Hampton in Pitsburgh’s 3-4 defense we really need to get big time production from Gabe Watson (last chance for Alan Branch)… Robinson has been a great role model for the young guys, but he is out of position, if we can get the two Michigan guys to play to their potential that can have a great impact on our defense… another development that I am interested too is our Outside Line Backers, they are the other key aspect of our front seven that has me worried, hope the rookies learn fast and the veterans stay healthy and produce… GO CARDINALS…

Agreed
The thing that concerns me the most is that nose tackle position. I sure hope Watson can return to his late 2007 form. If that is the cae and he builds on it,…. watch out for the Cards D!
Also on Whiz not getting a contract extension, I agree that it is to help impliment the no extensions before 1 year left, I have a hard time swallowing the “unless its a quarterback” scenario though.

1 word.
Leslie.
He will be very useful come the regular season at nose tackle.

Bleh.
That’s Leisle, Rodney. Our incumbent bench-warmer DT.

If he was going to be useful this season, I think he would have been useful last season? I expect more from Keilen Dykes than Rodney Leisle…

here's what ROTB wrote about him when he was signed
Link:
The Cardinals also signed a free agent defensive/nose tackle Rodney Leisle. He’s a 6’3 315 pound tackle who hasn’t played in an NFL regular season game since 2006. He was drafted in the 5th round of the 2004 draft by the Saints and played in 17 games over his first three seasons before being cut in the training camp of 2007. He resurfaced with the Giants during their training camp last year but a rib injury ended his season before it even got started. He spent some time in Canadian football with the Saskatchewan Roughriders during their 2008 season. At best, this could be a way to push Alan Branch further down the depth chart. He doesn’t sound like much but who knows. He’s still young and has some size. If he’s got any desire or motor he might leapfrog Alan Branch.

well he was signed in March of this year and hasn't really been in the NFL since '06
so don’t beat yourself up to much.

There is one thing you're all forgetting
There is a complete lask of depth at DE while trying to play a true 3-4 now. We have Dockett, Campbell, Iwebema and thats it. I dont know about you guys, but I dont really like the idea of Keilen Dykes and Jason Banks seeing playing time. Sure Berry, Okeafor, Haggans, Brown and Davis can all play DE but they’re OLB in 3-4.
I do agree that NT is a concern, but DE is an even bigger one!

DE
I think you’re also leaving out Robinson who should be playing much more DE if Watson is healthy. That’s two deep on both sides and that’s about all you ask for. Also Urban has mentioned a couple of times that Branch has been lining up at DE in practice.

Cody Brown too.
He’s slotted for OLB but he can be in the mix at DE too. Our DE depth may not be clear on the depth chart but the Cards have many options available if they have to adjust due to injuries/performance.

Over rated: Boldin, Sendlein, Dansby. Underated: Dockett making it rain at men's bath houses!
Who would win in a fight, Whisenhunt or a Hurricane?
Hold on, hold on, what if the Hurricanes name was Whisenhunt?
Daaaaaaaaaa Cards, Da Cards Da Cards Da Cards Da Cards!!!

Sendlein over rated? I thought that was your boy?

Sendlein is not overrated. Just the story line of how bad he is.
Glad I saved him. You’re gonna make Boog commit suicide talking about his boy like that. His man crush runs deeper than we all know. Even deeper than DD’s pockets when he’s making it rain at the strip club.

I like to throw pennies at them.
You get to see them bounce off their arses and its usually too dark to see them so I can pick them back up and recycle for the next chick.

Good idea
I’ll have to try it this weekend. Love the strip club on the 4th of July when the girls wear their American-themed gear. Makes me feel like a patriot.
