Extension for Karlos Dansby Seems Unlikely
Darren Urban throws a wet blanket on your weekend with two stories about Karlos Dansby's extension, or more accurately the complete lack thereof. The deadline for a deal is July 15th and Cardinals GM, Rod Graves, finally said today that it's unlikely that they'll meet that deadline. That of course means that Dansby will be a free agent after this season and it's very likely that the Cardinals will have to shell out a boat load of money to retain him (and even them some other team will likely steal him with crazy, monopoly money).
We've pretty much known that getting him under contract was a long shot but it still hurts to see it in black and white.

Dang...
Now I’m wondering what the position will look like next year — will Hayes take over Dansby’s spot? Or should we expect him to stay at his position and see someone new move in? Is it more likely for Hobson, Highsmith or Togafau to step up next year, or for them to bring in a free agent or rookie?
This puts the entire LB corps up in the air next year with the exception of Hayes, to my mind. Two rookies and a handful of players at retirement-age (a couple already past it, frankly) could mean anything?

I'm fine with...
Brown, Highsmith, Togafau & Davis next year. Young, hungry and cheap.

If those 4 could hold their own as starters
that would be the epitome of strong drafting and development within a franchise. Only I would not disregard Hayes at this point.

Hayes becomes invaluable if that scenario plays out. At this point, none of those four are considered starters so if they turned out to be an effective unit one season from now that wouldn’t just be the epitome of strong drafting and development as much as it would be considered completely legendary.

I know, I know. Wishful thinking.
Its just a pipe dream. I just like the idea of young players and building thru the draft.

Agreed
No doubt about the wisdom in that, hopefully there is a potential star in that batch.

I'm thinking there will be a free agent or two and 1st round pick spent on the LB corp

Time to figure out who will be FA of note at ILB for next season.

Some good options
The biggest name (outside of Dansby) ILB available will be Houston Texans’ DeMeco Ryans. Some others are Gary Brackett (Colts) and Kirk Morrison (Raiders). I’ll be curious to see if we go that route since free agency is something we typically wade, not dive, into. But I can’t imagine trying to fill Dansby’s spot in the draft for 2010.

ILB's next year
I could see us drafting an ILB in the first round next year and signing a older vet on a one year deal to bring him along slowly. Or, I could also see them moving Haggans inside for a year while a young early round pick learns the ropes for the beginning of the season or the whole season.
Of the guys you mentioned, Gary Brackett is too small for the 3-4, he’s just like Derrick Brooks in that he’s an undersized Tampa-2 backer. Ryans actually probably will not be a free agent next year b/c if there’s no new CBA, he’ll still be a RFA since he’ll only have 4 accrued seasons. If he were avaliable though, he’d get a bigger deal than Dansby. Morrison is actually in the same boat as Ryans b/c he’ll only have five seasons under his belt.

I’m thinking along the same lines. Pick up a 1st round LB and sign a vet to a 1-2 year and allow the rookie to come grow into the position. Though moving Haggans inside and maybe getting an OLB FA does sound pretty good.

Hey Long Beach, where were you able to find the FA LBs for 2010?

The Bright Side...
More money available to get Boldin done.
I can’t fault KD for wanting to maximize income opportunities for him and his family. The only thing I hope for is that he is taking this position with love still in his heart for his teammates, the Cardinal organization and its fans (and that he’ll play his butt off this coming season and try to get his first Super Bowl ring as a Cardinal).

I wouldn't mind seeing Kirk Morrison in red
however, I’d rather see us grab a great ILB in the Draft. If any are left by the time our 1st round pick comes up (#32?)

Could be. I still think Maualuga lasted too long in this draft.
