Levi Jones to the Redbirds?
So I thought that I had heard all the offseason rumors, and anything new was going to come from the known corners--a Dansby extension, Boldin making waves, or Fitz being awesome at his camp. I know we had discussed the Levi Jones possibility earlier in the spring, but still hearing more news about it came to me as something of a surprise.
Len Pasquarelli of ESPN says that the Cards have had discussions with Levi Jones about joining with the team and replacing Gandy at LT. Jones was released by the Bengals earlier this spring after struggling to recover from chronic knee issues (missed 28 starts in the past 3 years). That being said, when he is healthy, he is a monster, and would be an improvement over Gandy and his salary of $5.8M this year.
There would be a few issues that would come up with the signing then too. People say Gandy is better suited to play RT, and Levi Brown is better suited as a guard, but that's an awful lot of cash being paid to the right side of the line in that case. If (and its certainly an *if* at this point) Jones gets signed, do they cut Gandy? Do they ask him to renegotiate and line up with Jones at LT, R. Wells at LG, Sendlein at C, Brown at RG, and Gandy at RT? What do you guys think? How would you deal with the situation?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Revenge of the Birds' (ROTB) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of ROTB's editors.

What We Know or Don't Know...
Anytime a highprofile player is released, you have to ask yourself “Why?” (Teams don’t let quality LT’s go for no reason).
What may all boil down to is: What would the trade off be between Gandy and Jones? (How do the 2 compare in terms of skill-set, age, motivation, health etc.)? How would each fit into the requirements of the system?
Plus – What would each of them cost? Conceivably, could we afford both? Who’d be the odd man out (Oliver Ross? Vallejo? E Brown?)
In short, what would the risk be in relation to the potential reward?
In this respect, what do we really know/don’t know?

If
it happens I don’t see it as the beginning of a complete overhaul of the OL. I think in this scenario Gandy gets released and Jones takes over at LT. I don’t take anything that Pasquarelli says very seriously but if it gives us some relief under the cap I’ll give the report the benefit of the doubt.

Really?
28 starts over the past three years. Why would there even be talk? People gave us crap about the supposed injury proneness of Beanie. Why would we even look at this guy?

I agree. Why take Jones? With the injury concerns I would not take the guy just to save a bit of cap space. Remember a couple of years ago when people complained about the line not being stable due to injuries? Medder, Johnson, Ross, and Brown going down at one point or another. This line has been one of the worst in the NFL for a running game and now when it has gotten better, but still not the best, there is talk about bringing in an injury prone LT. I doubt they would actually take Jones on.

I like Gandy
but have read some reports on how LT is not his natural position, the latest written by Michael Lombardi… it would be unfair to judge him only on his SB performance, but eventually a move will be make to replace him, so if Grimm and Whisenhunt feel is for the better of the team then I think we should do it

Gandy sucks!
Got beat all year on the inside lane and is paid way too much! His only plus is he stays healthy and helps contribute to the continuity of the O-line. My 2-cents…
Oh yeah, wazzzzzzzzzzzzzup fellow ROTBer’s!
Who would win in a fight, Whisenhunt or a Hurricane?
Hold on, hold on, what if the Hurricanes name was Whisenhunt?

I say no, due to his history of injury
But that is a great picture, he looks like a monster!
Anyone have any reason why Willie McGinest shouldn’t be picked at LB? I just read that he’s still a FA.
by CardsFan08 on Jul 18, 2009 2:08 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
What does he add?
What is McGinest going to add to our team that isn’t already present? If we’re a little old at OLB what sense does it make to add someone who is 37 coming off a one-sack season?

Wow, I didn’t realize he was that old!
Yeah we’ve got enough oldie’s but goodies, no reason to add another.

50/50
honestly, levi jones is a manbeast when he’s healthy, but the gentleman has a glass knee.
it is very much of a toss up if it would pay off though. are the cards willing to bet on mr. jones?
i don’t think so.

if he's real cheap sign him...... but don't release Gandy
by CardsDefense on Jul 18, 2009 4:50 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Somebody would have to go
If we do sign him we have to release somebody due to the amount of players we have on our training camp roster. So if we’re not releasing Gandy and the $6 million or so he counts against the cap who are we letting go? I can see the arguments for/against some of the others, but at this point it seems the only reason to bring Jones in is to reduce the cap number.

Just Wondering But...
If the Cards were to lock up Levi Jones, would they then go one step farther and recruit Levi Johnson from Alaska in order to lock up all the Levis in America.
(Note – One of the best and most unsung Levis played for Yale in the late 1940’s. First Yale Captain of Afro-American heritage. Name: Levi Jackson).

Please no..
Levi’s inconsistent, old and injury prone. How is that an upgrade over Gandy? He gave up 5.5 sacks in only 10 games last year (as opposed to 6.25 that Gandy gave up all season). Keep Gandy, let him play out his final year, and we’ll find ourselves a replacement next year.

Mostly agree
but it may be a necessary cap reduction move that is being played out here. I agree about Levi being injury prone, but when healthy (a major problem for him last year, hence the inconsistency) he would be an upgrade over Gandy. He’s actually a year younger than Gandy as well (29 vs 30).
However, I too, am a little uncomfortable with a LT with leg issues protecting Warner’s blindside. If we do sign him I have full confidence that the Cardinal FO will have checked his health out very thoroughly.

Gandy doesnt seem like a glaring weakness at LT.
by Irishcardinal on Jul 19, 2009 3:47 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
I really think that Gandy did a pretty good job last year, especially if you pretend the Super Bowl didn’t happen. And as far as the Super Bowl is concerned, would Levi Jones (at full strength) have been able to deal with the Steelers’ defensive front? I’m not sure.
In the end, if they have to do it for cap reasons, I understand, but I would like to see the consistency stay for another year if possible.

it all depends on money and his expectations
I think Urban summed it up best by saying that if Jones wanted to play for cheap and compete for a job, he’d already be here. He obviously still thinks that he’s a very good player, maybe still Pro Bowl caliber, and should be paid like one, not to mention guaranteed starting job. Maybe those expectations lower as camp nears or maybe some team throws decent money at a guy with that much talent. Either way I think we’re playing it smart right now and there’s really no pressure on the front office to get this done.
Just for the grins though, how does this line look (from left to right): Jones, Wells, Sendlein, Brown and Gandy.

Agree that if he did want to compete he would be.
He obviously wants pro bowl money and to be a starter.

Ha, if that's the case, let a team like Oakland or Det throw starting money at him
Maybe he returns to pro bowl level or maybe he struggles through knee injury after knee injury for the rest of his career.

From Somers
The Cardinals remain interested in former Bengals offensive tackle Levi Jones, according to his agent, Kenny Zuckerman, but Jones is not close to signing with any team just yet…….Jones obviously would like a starting job and a corresponding salary, but that opportunity hasn’t presented itself yet. The Cardinals are among 10 to 12 teams that have expressed interest, Zuckerman said. “They (the Cardinals) wanted to sign him a while ago but it’s not in his best interest unless the contract they gave him guarantees that he would be paid commensurate with how much he was going to play,” Zuckerman said. In other words, if Jones becomes a starting left tackle, he doesn’t want to be making a minimum salary. At least it sounds like he’s willing to compete for a starting job. Maybe they could do some kind of incentive based contract that rewards him for every start. That would be a way to ensure that he gets paid “commensurate to how much he plays” and gives the Cardinals some protection in case he blows out the knee again.
