first impressions

I was impressed by:

The entire 1st string defense

Steve Breaston and Lance Long

LSH

Matt Lineart

Tyler Palko (the late int wasn’t his fault)

Dominique Byrd

R. J.

Overall I was very impressed with the product I saw on the field. Ken Whisenhunt continues to impress me with the way he gets his football teams prepared for gameday.

interesting you mention RJ

I didnt see him do anything. If I missed it let me know so I can be more excited.

Didn't really notice RJ that much either

Toler definitely has some potential & athleticism.

Impressed(+) and Disappointed(-)

+ Calais Campell. Looks like we wont miss AS one bit. He was consistently in the backfield while still holding up the run.
+ LSH. He didnt get much but he made the best of what he got.
+ Will Davis. He seemed to get into the backfield just missing a nice sack and likely fumble on Dixon.
+ Leinart. Not spectacular and a couple lofty & loose balls but overall “managed” the game well.
+ MRG as kick returner, not receiver.
+ Onrea Jones showed great concentration on the catch where he slipped. Carrying over from camp.
+ Lance Long. See above.
+Tim Hightower. Quick and more north and south than last year
+ Tyler Palko
+ 1st team offense & defense.

- Cody Brown. Saw nothing good.
- RJ. I personally didnt see him do anything. he was around the ball a few times but that was all.
- Alan Branch. Enough said.
- BSP
- Defensive depth

Leinart and Palko looked great, St. Pierre needs to get out.

I was really impressed with the drives Warner and Leinart had at the start even though they didn’t score.

Pierre blew every chance he had, and I was starting to boo and yell at the tv in a vain effort to have them put Leinart back in after his first drive.

Palko was great, and I thought he was going to get a touchdown at the end of the game. This guy could be good in the Wildcat if we try using that this year.

BTW, does anyone else wanna bet that HardHat will still be hating on Leinart even though he played pretty well in this game/

by JoeCB1991 on Aug 13, 2009 9:28 PM MDT up reply actions

Personally

I’m really glad that MRG showed some talent at KR that way the responsibility doesn’t have to rest solely on Breaston… Secondly, Calais makes me feel very comfortable with our defense this year… I said it before and I’ll say it again that our defense barring any major injuries will be feared by many this season…. just watch

MRG did good at KR but...

he didn’t do all that good at PR, even though there was only a few punts to deal with for him, and he wasn’t all that great at WR. If he wants to make the roster he has to vastly improve in those areas.

by Pyromnc on Aug 14, 2009 8:12 AM MDT up reply actions

Did he?

I was pretty tired watching this game as I had to DRV it to watch later. Must of confused his punt returns with Rolle’s

by Pyromnc on Aug 14, 2009 8:41 AM MDT up reply actions

yea he averaged 10 yards and his third return was the worst

He went 15 yards, then 11 and then on the last one he got his legs cut out from under him after just four.

I couldn't watch the game on tv so...

how did branch do? he looked as though he made quite a few tackles for short yardage but not many people are singing his praises

do we keep mrg on the roster for returns?

how were our rookie OLBs?

rashad?

also what do people think of cutting BSP and keeping palko on the roster?

by beanbaglovers on Aug 14, 2009 6:25 AM MDT reply actions

preseason game 1

- I think it is way too soon to give up on BSP, yes he played poorly, but it is still early

- Yes Leinart played well on his two full series, but when he first came in he was atrocious. His first pass to Boldin was inexcusable. (And no I am no HardHat, I still believe in Matty)

- The highlight of the game has to be Herman Johnson’s open field tackle on the second to last play of the first half

- Our first string defense was good, especially against the run, but I was still a little disappointed by our pass rush

- LSH played well with a couple of nice runs and blitz pick ups

- As good as MRG was in the return game is how bad he played as a receiver

- Cody Brown was a complete nonfactor

- Our third string defense made little effort at the goalline (both times)

- Urban played great with a couple of nice catches and one HUGE downfield block

- Long and Onrea Jones also played well, but I am not sure where they would fit on the roster.

- Morey had better keep up the special teams play, because he would never make the roster as a WR

- How disappointed was everyone when Rolle coughed up that punt? The Cards have to find someone else besides Breaston as a PR.

+1 Play highlight belongs to Herman Johnson's open field tackle!

+ I really liked LSH, he fought hard and held his own and if there was a way I’d like to keep him.
+ Garvin was a good returner and I saw two bursts of speed that made my jaw drop but he didn’t really get to really open up. I say, keep giving it to him for more proof. But I think Breaston should not be the man, let him rest.
+ Lance Long and Breaston were awesome.
+ Urban is making a statement that he needs to stay on the roster. That block and his catches were awesome.

- BSP, c’mon man!

Nice to see some football again.

Defense
-1st string looked pretty solid, but the the opening Steelers drive gave me flashbacks of Rothlesberger running around wildly and breaking every tackle imaginable.
-Definitely a hard 3-4 on 1st & 2nd downs. Seemed like they ran a few more hybrid fronts on 3rd & longs.
-Lots of blitzing early & often. Dissappointed there were no sacks all game, and with a little more pressure should have gotten an easy safety on the second steelers drive.
-2nd & 3rd string D gave up way too many plays. Adams, Lewis & Toler showed some promise in the defensive backfield. RJ didn’t particularly stand out on any given play to me. Brown & Davis still need a ways to go at OLB. Nice play on the long ball by Toler in Pitt’s first 2nd have drive.

Offense
-Hightower looks better than ever. Especially in the 2nd drive while Warner was starting to click again.
-Leinarts throws were a little eratic at first but looked solid in his first complete drive. 5 completions in a row at one point. Still needs to get more comfortable in the 2 minute offense, but overall he seemed lightyears ahead of where he was last pre-season.
- BSP: If this were the last pre-season game, I would go with Palko at #3 at this point. Maybe he just had a bad day, and I would like to see more of him in the next 3 games. Although he looked completely lost at times, the 2nd string linemen weren’t exactly doing him any favors in pass protection and a couple receivers dropped easy passes from him. He made a few short passes to Breaston, Byrd & Pope that made me think not all hope was lost for him.
-Palko: This kid is exiting to watch. If he keeps this up throughout the preseason, he should definitely be our 3rd qb. The interception off of Garvin’s hands wasn’t his fault Looked comfortable when scrambling and made a couple nice plays out of them. He definitely likes him some Onrea Jones, and could have had another TD to Long in his second drive.
-Wright didn’t do anything special but looked servicable as a #3.
-LSH had one nice run to the outside but danced around too much on another run.

MRG seems to have a good shot in the return game.

And

I expected LSH to get a shot on returns. He seemed to be in the rotation during training camp so far.

I wonder if they left Garvin back there because he was doing so well

30 yards a return is amazing

+1

Hope he keeps up that pace throughout the preseason and beyond.

+1 Hightower was better than ever

His plays were great. Attack the hole and drive. The man has something to prove.

Toler looked very good, and reminded me of a young DRC relying on physical gifts and less on skill and knowledge at this point in his career. But scary good once he starts to polish up.

Adams had some good plays, but that long ball against Sweed was pretty sad. That was just a big man versus a little man.
