What would Palko have to do to Earn the #3 or even a #2 spot?

Tyler Palko played far better than Brian St. Pierre or Matt Leinart in last week's preseason game, but how many more preseason performances like last week would it take to earn a legitimate shot at the #3 or even the #2 spot?

Star-divide

In my opinion, Leinart still lacks the consistency or arm strength of a #1 QB for this team. Yes, he was solid after the first series, but that will only go so far when we are relying on his passing skills to win a game. His mobility in the pocket is horrible and the zip on his balls flat out stinks. St. Peirre really disappointed me too. He seemed to crumble in the pocket whenever there was any kind of pressure. On the other hand, Palko turned several busted plays into a positive gain with his athleticism and poise. I know it was 3rd stringers he was facing but let's see what he does with the second team. I at least think Whiz should give him the same shot that he's given the other two QB's in front of him. As of now, neither St. Pierre nor Leinart have really stepped up to the plate.

Thoughts?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Revenge of the Birds' (ROTB) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of ROTB's editors.

Sounds fair to me..

theres still 3 preseason games to test his ability, perhaps even against 2nd stringers. My guess is that this next preseason game will be all about St. Pierre and Leinart again considering St. Pierre was named number 2 this game or w/e, but if Palko has as good a showing as last game, surely the Whizenator will take notice.

I say we won't know till the last preseason game is in the books.

He really looked good last week though. We’ll find out if he gets a little more playing time.

Okay I am confused…

Is ROTB a glorified message board or a place for journalism and news?

This article seems like it was just written by a Leinart hater that wants people to see his point of view. NO coaches have said anything bad about Leinart, NO coaches have said anything about BSP negatively.

I heard Mitch Mustain (sp?) on the radio last year, he’s a backup QB on USC and he said that he has never seen anyone with more arm strength than Matt Leinart. He went over and above stating that ML had a rocket for an arm. Hilarious, Matt doesnt have the passing skills to win a game? Laughable, see Monday night against the Bears. If not for wide right Rackers shanking that kick ML would have won that game. Oh and ML had plenty of arm strength for the rookie record in yards per game.

Simple rule to follow as a Cards fan from here on out:

LISTEN TO THE COACHES!!!

Whiz hasn’t lead us down the wrong path yet, so I will listen to him.

I thought ROTB was a place to go for well thought out articles not another Leinart hater making his unsubstantiated point of view. Disappointed….

As for Palki, keep playing well and Whiz will move you up. C

I think that Leinart is ready, even though he isn’t as good as Warner [not many are], he has been working hard on improving himself and I think he will be able to carry this team when he gets his chance.

Like you said, he did a great job against the Bears in his 2nd start on the team, and back then they were worse than they are now.

Well

I don’t think anyone really hates Leinart thus far. I really like Leinart and hope he takes this year very seriously to play. He just hasn’t developed into the QB he should have been by now due to injuries and not playing much last year. He will be the starter in time but he has to show that he can do it. I would not be shocked to see him have to start a game or two or come in for relief of Warner. This was a first preseason game this year and teams are just getting back into playing. Overall Warner will start, Leinart will be #2. Then depending on how well BSP or Palko does in the next week or two we will get #3. My main bet is that BSP will turn arond this week and will look like the #3 guy. I don’t think we have a backup QB controversy brewing but a third string QB contest showing up.

YOUR RIGHT, Since when do journalists or news outlets have a bias or objective?

Just look at Fox News…oh wait a minute. Well what about CNN…On second thought . The New York Times, DAMN!

This blog is written by the fans for the fans, who all (to some degree) have varied opinions. I’m not discrediting yours, I’m just saying, chill out broske…Or should I say Matt. It’s my understanding you have been practicing beer pong to help prepare for the upcoming season. Any validity to this?

Is ROTB a glorified message board or a place for journalism and news?

The only proper answer to that question is that we’re somewhere between “neither” and “both.” Clear as mud?

Ok to elaborate, ROTB is built by the fans, for the fans and run by the fans. No one is an expert and no one here is working for the Cardinals or ESPN or the NFL. Are some fans going to have a bias toward certain players, coaches or philosophies? Sure, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are right or wrong. The bottom line is that everyone has an opinion and we are not all going to agree with everyone’s else’s opinions.

I personally have always thought that Matt’s arm was about average but having a rocket arm isn’t the only skill that a QB needs to be successful and it’s certainly doesn’t guarantee success. Plenty of ‘big-armed’ QB’s never made an impact in this league and Matt has other strengths. Still though some of the reports out of the summer were that the new QB’s coach was working with Matt to improve his footwork to help him get more zip on the ball. So we’ll see if the improved footwork helps him this season and beyond.

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

I think I may have jumped the gun on you ROTB. I just saw that this “article” is under fanposts at the top. Which I am guessing means that a fan posted it. Not sure why that ends up on the front page though.

Also, to the fan poster or Original Poster:

I did not see that you had written “In my opinion” at the beginning. My apologies, I hope you accept them. You are entitled to your opinion and I respect it, although I disagree.

My only problem was that if people come to this site for news then that is what should be here. If it is for fans opinions that is what the forum or comments is for. So I am still learning the site and should not jump to conclusions.

As for an answer to the original question:

Palko looked good, but so did BSP last pre-season. Matt Leinart looked good, take Gruden’s opinion on that one. However, pre-season is a tough way to judge performance. If we take the Raiders pre-season last year, ML shouldnt be able to suit up. BSP outplayed him. But you have to take heavy consideration who is on the field when these guys are playing. Their supporting cast and their opponents. Makes things too tough for me to figure out. But once again I rely on the couches eyes and experience to make those decisions.

If Palko keeps playing hard and working hard in practice then Whiz has shown that he rewards that kind of behavior. Love his enthusiasm and thought he looked better than BSP but we shall see.

No problem, I almost didnt see yours and was going to write:

Yeah but CNN doesnt post my comment as their main story on their homepage do they.

(But it was worded with a more negative tone, until I saw your post, lol)

by thereallacardsfan on Aug 18, 2009 5:23 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

No worries

But the purpose of SBNation, is blogs “Of, By, and For the Fans”. Myself and the other editors are actually just fans of the Cardinals, and write stories/news about them on this blog. But I will take your criticism as respect. So if we go by SBnations motto, then posting a fans fanpost or fanshot on the main page supports it. We don’t always post them on the front page if it’s just somebody’s opinion, but sometimes they stir up good discussion, as you can see from the comments so far.

Playing 4th stringers doesn’t really push him up the depth chart. Unless BSP bombs the next 3 games.

I'm a cardinal's fan and I have an opinion

Palko should be able to compete for the #3 spot if he continues to play well. Matt L. needs as much preseason playing time as he can get. Keep him at #2 and maybe give him some time with the threes.

If Palko continues to excel (and stir up the fans) then he should earn a chance to move up. They only brought BSP back with a 1-year contract, so he’s probably not big in their future plans.

Everyone’s being a little hasty about it, though. BSP was the preseason standout last year, and after one sub-par outing everyone’s ready to toss him. Besides that, we’ve seen Palko play once? And yes, he was able to evade scrubs flailing around him and falling down, but we didn’t see him take a body-slam from Harrison full on and keep rolling, did we? Finally, and this is basically repetition from the last collective Palko-squee: if he somehow does manage to take a 2nd- or 3rd-string job, do you really want to see him throwing himself into the air Sage Rosenfels-style at the risk of life, limb, and a turnover?

I’m not trying to say everyone is exactly wrong about it. He did have a better game than BSP, he was fun to watch, but we all need to see more from both of them… With BSP ‘starting’ the next match it’ll be the best bet yet for everyone to see what he’s got. And if he sucks it up again, I hope Palko gets a shot to move up.

IT ISN'T BETWEEEN LEINART AND PALKO (YET)

With (a healthy) Warner a lock at #1, Leinart is as close to a lock at #2.

For me the litmus test for a backup can best be illustrated as follows: Your starting QB goes down in a close game. Can the backup step in and do more than merely “run the game out?” Can he bring the team back from behind? Can he run the clock out to preserve a win?

While still needing to demonstrate more consistency for my taste, Leinart has demonstrated – both in college and his brief career as a starter – that he can do what it takes to win.

In his brief appearance Thursday vs. Pittsburgh, Palko certainly demonstrated that he can do more than just ’run out the game." The question for him has to be: "Will he be given the opportunity during the next 3 games to prove he can move the offense consistently?

BSP had a “bad hair day” against the Steelers. At least in that one game, he did not prove he had what it takes to move the offense and win games for us. Like Palko, he has 3 games to prove somethingl however, while Palko’s challenge is to prove he can play at the same level again, BSP’s challenge is to prove that the last game was a fluke and that he can play better.

Which is my longwinded way of saying – “The battle figures to be between BSP and Palko for the final QB spot on the 53 man roster (and not between BSP and Leinart for #2).”

What will Wiz do? Only Wiz knows. However, I agree with the guy who observed that Wiz has never let us down so far and can be relied upon to make a fair, just and wise decision on his #3 QB.

I hope we can keep him here for a long time.

And I think that Leinart will keep his #2 spot until Warner retires. Breaking his collarbone set him back a little bit but he is probably one of the best backup Quarterbacks in the NFL and I agree he did show that he knows how to win games while he was the starter.

by JoeCB1991 on Aug 19, 2009 1:32 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Leinart

Whiz says he was happy with Matt in his first preseason game, I on the other hand was not. And yet, I think Palko would have to play even better for 3 more games to get serious consideration for either #3 or 2.

Palko

Ok he looked good, but he was also playing against other fourth stringers too, from the only team to draft lower than the Cardinals. Too soon to tell anything. I like the fact that it is an open competition. May the best man win. Warner is still the best, but he is injury prone. Work all three of these guys to see who is best suited to step in if heaven forbid Kurt goes down, and who if any is the future.

I am sure San Francisco, will be happy to dumpster dive any QB we don’t keep.

Palko playing for a job... Just not here

Palko played scrappy against future practice squad members, and we all like that, but lets not get too anxious about his future. There is a reason he has bounced around the league and it isn’t because he hasn’t gotten a fair chance. He knew when he came here that making the team would require a miracle. I think he is hoping to be the #3 someplace else, and so he is playing hard. Hope he does well but I can’t imagine a scenario where he is a Cardinal once the season starts.

Yes and No

It’s true that he’s most likely showcasing himself for other teams but he hasn’t “bounced around the league.” He was signed as a UDFA by the Saints in ’07 and spent parts of season on the roster and parts on the practice squad. He was in line to be the Saints third string QB in 2008 until he injured his thumb during the preseason.

Leinart, et al

Matt Leinart has the potential to be a servicable NFL QB and might put up fairly impressive numbers given the cadre of receivers the Cardinals have. His problem is not arm strength, though he is only average in that department, Rather, he is quite slow in his decision-making and delivery. Comparatively, Warner makes his reads and releases much more quickly. In a game where hundredths of a second can determine a completion or interception Leinart is exposed by his languid, long-arm delivery style. To some extent, he compensates with a very nice touch, accuracy and good visualization. In any event, Warner (like all QB’s) is one hit away from injury and/or retirement and the odds are that Leinart will be starting a portion of this year or next. BSP will, indeed, need to step up to retain a reserve role in the NFL. Palko is a guy who is easy to root for and much younger than BSP. It is hard to say what Wisenhunt is looking for in the #3 guy, but neither Palko or St. Pierre can legitimately push Leinart and Matt isn’t going anywhere.

After watching Leinart against the Chargers

He looks like he has some decent mobility, and he did a good job throwing while he was running away from a defender, he also looks like he is a better decision maker now.

I still want to see more of Palko, but Leinart will have to **** up big to lose the #2 spot, and Pierre is digging a hole deep enough to make him the #4 or the guy that gets cut if there are two more solid performances from Palko.

by JoeCB1991 on Aug 25, 2009 7:27 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Give the 3 to Palko

He is younger with a higher upside. Plus, it looks like he is earning the 3 better than BSP anyway.

When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome again. True story.
