Arizona Cardinals Quick Hits

We're two weeks deep into the preseason and I'm sure most of us are saying, "Is the regular season here yet?" The answer is no. With two games left of the preseason, and almost two weeks left, we're still stuck hearing about positional battles and predictions of what the Cardinals will look like in 2009. So to continue that trend, here's some news around the web about our very own Cardinals.

- Darren Urban discusses the possibility of Brian St. Pierre being moved to the practice squad, and he states that he would be eligible. He also believes that Matt Leinart has pretty much secured the number two role on the team, and that Tyler Palko would need to be very impressive to have a chance to make the roster.

Also from Urban, he talks about the Cardinals lack of offense so far in the preseason and that the Cardinals are still not concerned with it. Larry Fitzgerald says that coach Whisenhunt isn't giving anything away to regular season opponents, such as the no huddle offense. This makes sense as the Cardinals offense hasn't looked too complex at this point.

- Mike Sando talks to the Cardinals new defensive coordinator, Bill Davis, and gathers his thoughts for the 2009 season. Davis talks about his past and what he's bringing to the Cardinals defense. He also talks about Darnell Dockett and his move to a new position saying that he's really excited for Dockett, and believes he'll have a good season. Davis talks about getting back to basics, and focusing on their weaknesses of last year:

You can focus on a lot of things, Davis said, but when you have our offense, which we have so much respect for and it's fun to watch, we've got to take care of ours. We've got to stop the deep ball. We've got to make sure we get pressure on the quarterback. We have to play the run like we did in the playoffs.

Star-divide

- At Azcentral, they look at the top three things to watch for tonight. The most important is stopping the explosive offense of the Packers. They also address the wide receiver battle between Lance Long, Early Doucet, Sean Morey, and Orea Jones. The final thing to look for is the returning of LSH.

- Also from Azcentral, they evaluate the Cardinals defense and feel out the possibilities and what we can expect for next year. Davis feels that not everybody was on the same page last year with Clancy Pendergast as the defensive coordinator. He also feels that they will be able to generate a consistent pass rush this year. Adrian Wilson had this to say about the defense:

I think everybody knows what they're doing. I think that was a part of it (last season), people didn't know where they were supposed to be, and they really didn't take the time to study and just know the defense. Now, things aren't as simplified as they were last year, but guys have a year of experience under their belts.

Great post, Andrew.

What’s your take on Bill Davis thus far? I liked his schemes for the first team last week (loved the loop stunt for Dansby!)…and one thing that seems apparent is the team is tackling better as a whole, which is certainly key this year to a better defense. I think too that he’s done a good job of simplifying the roles…not as much flip-flopping…and while the DL seems late setting up still on some occasions, the frequency of that (which was clear under C) has dimished somewhat. The one thing that’s been missing, however: the turnovers. Will we see some tonight?

And for all the ROTB members. Who are your three favorite bubble players, who you want most to make this team?

Mine are 27-Michael Adams, 36-LaRon Stevens-Howling, and 19-Lance Long…three diminutive catalysts with quick feet who make things happen.

If most of you agree with those three…how about two more?

I’ll leave mine out for now…and leave that door wide open.

I like what Davis is doing too, and I agree with your 3 bubble picks although I like Long and LSH better than Adams.

Bubble List

Mitch – individually, I like each of the three players on your bubble list but collectively, I would be surprised if all three made the team with their similar physical attributes. Michael Adams adds a lot of value as a special teams gunner, and LSH adds a lot of value with his KR returns and 3rd down back abilities. However, as good as Lance Long is as a slot receiver, I have not seen enough of him on special teams to warrant a roster spot with the depth we have at WR. Its my hope that Alan Branch “gets it” and really contributes on the Dline this year. His physical ability is special and much harder to find….if only he had the inner drive of players like Lance Long and Michael Adams, we would have quite a player. His potential impact to the team is much higher than a 5th or 6th string receiver and I believe this is his last chance to succeed. That being said, I did see the cards play the rams last year….prior to the game (and even warm-ups), he was sitting on the cards bench alone and over weight. I did not see a motivated player in my eyes. I have very low confidence he will succeed….but if he does, we will have quite the Dline. So, my bubble list is Adams, LSH, and Branch with the view of whats the best ceiling for the Cards….not necessarily my favorite players.

I Hear You Bob

Good points all around.

But…every time Long gets in a game it seems he’s good for 5 catches and 54 yards. That’s pretty good production, if you ask me.

I hope he sticks. And no way do the Cardinals let go of Early Doucet either. The recent WR ailments might make it absolutely necessary to keep them both anyway.

Enjoy the game, Bob and everyone!
