Better Know the Jacksonville Jaguars: Ask Big Cat Country

Hey Revenge of the Birds

This is John, one of the writers over at SBN's Jaguar blog Big Cat Country. The Cards travel to the East Coast to play my Jaguars this Sunday. Both teams are coming off close losses against divisional rivals, which I'm sure neither of us wanted. If you have any questions related to the Jacksonville Jaguars in general, or the game on Sunday in specific, feel free to ask away.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Revenge of the Birds' (ROTB) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of ROTB's editors.

Well I live 2 hours away in Orlando...

and I go there quite often to visit my mother. I admit that the Jags are my AFC team, but I never seriously thought about going to a game. Even when I’m driving on the bridge passing the stadium during a game, I don’t think about stopping. I think its cause their just boring.

Thank you to everyone for the kind words.

I’m in much better spirits now and actually got online today on the game thread.

Yes, i'll admit the Jaguars don't have the most excitable game

I think running the ball down the middle every first down can get old quickly but I think its the 4th quarter when it starts getting fun. The Jaguars have a tendency of giving people heart attacks (not literally) late in the 4th. I think Mjd with a O line with the rookies that in one year will be very fun but for now the rookie Tackles are learning. I think we’ll throw the long ball a bit more but it depends on the blocking. If you go to a Jags game you might get addicted, so it might be a safe bet to not if you only want to seriously cheer for the Cardinals.

I would expect a good amount of success from the run game

Maurice Jones-Drew is the feature back obviously. He averaged 5 yards a carry last week against Indy and I would expect the Jaguars to give it to him alot again. While rookie Eugene Monroe struggled against Dwight Freeney, the rest of the offensive line performed very well.

Do you think your running game will beas productive as a few years ago

when you could run on even the top defenses? Do you still have the same line coach?

by steelerstyle on Sep 15, 2009 1:46 AM MDT up reply actions

The Line coach is still the same, Andy Heck is his the coach's name

Running game wouldn’t be as productive becuase of the rookie tackles starting but there’ll be moments where we break it long, just not as often.

What does the loss of Reggie Hayward do to the defense?

How’s his backup?

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

by Bezekira on Sep 15, 2009 8:27 AM MDT reply actions

Hayward was finally going back to his 2005 form before another devestating injury, so it hurts

Back up, what back up? Quentin Groves may see time, or it may make the Jags switch to a 3-4 more often.

Groves is a Tweener guy which is a guy who isn't physically suitable

for the 4-3 De or 3-4 DE so he’s basically a Rush 3-4 LB, if the Steelers had achance to get him they would because he fits their D perfectly. I think we’ll have to blitz to get pressure becuase our front 4 (or 3) don’t do it as well alone.

also, were you surprised that you guys played the Colts so closely?

No offense but I don’t think many national pundits gave you guys any chance of competing in the AFC South this season so do you think this game was more about the Jags being better than most people give them credit for or the Colts being worse?

They usually have long careers

Plenty of time to learn to be good (I hope lol)

Monroe vs. Freeney

Jon, what did you expect from Monroe? He’s playing in his first career game on the road against Dwight Freeney. I think Monroe did ok considering the circumstances. I can distinctly remember Freeney embarrassing Jon Ogden of the Ravens on multiple occasions and Ogden is a future Hall of Fame tackle.

Maybe your expectations where just a tad high for Monroe?

Jacksonville Jaguars. It's what I do.

Jaguars are a sleeper team that can surprise some but are below average at the moment

there’s hardly a chance that we’l go to the playoffs so thw motivation is let the rookies learn now and keep rebuilding. The Colts are the Colts and we did a 7 DB Defense that forced them to run it more which kept the game closer, also our D held them twice on a 4th and 1. So Colts will probably still get 11 or so wins. Jags according to me should finish 6-10, 7-9.

How is Torry Holt performing so far?

Do you wish Fred Taylor was still on the Roster?

Is David Garrard really a long term fit at quarterback?

What do you see the Jags defense doing to shut down our passing attack?

Whats the biggest weakness on the Jags that the Cardinals will likely take advantage of?

Thanks guys.

I'll answer this one

Torry Holt is at best a clutch, possession WR, He’s slow but dependable. he has a year or so left till the engine dies.

I kinda wish we still had Fred because currently we don’t have enough complimentary RBs and he was a face of the Jaguars, It was hard to see him let go.

Garrard isn’t long term-long term in the aspect of his age being over 30. Its been heavily considered that we’ll draft a QB in the draft and during preseason why we acquired Luke McCown from the Bucs. Tebow, Snead, and Dan Lefevour are QBs being thought of.

i think you’ll see alot of different packages, like sometimes a 3-4 zone hybrid, 7 DB package and the Cover 2. Derek Cox will most likely play Larry, and Larry will have a day similar to Reggie Wayne. But i think you’ll be surprised by him.

Biggest advantage ya’ll have to utilize, hmm. Well The O-Line has two rookie bookends (Tackles) and corner blitzes or regular blitz can overload the line. So you might be able to get more pressure on David Garrard and have more time on offense.

I feel a big game for me...

Im going to be over at Noah’s house early for some caucasians. I hearby declare the second game of the seaon “The Dude Day”.

by badmatty53 on Sep 18, 2009 3:22 PM MDT up reply actions

Alright here's a couple names

Offense: Maurice Jones Drek, wait you heard of him? Ok well then here’s his backup, Rashad Jennings, also Jennings is our 2009 7th round pick and only “RB” on the team behind MJD.

Then there’s Mike Sims-Walker, its been about 3 years of IR but after Week 4 he Looked amazing, he didn’t show last week and he’s expected to help the passing game, he’s our second WR. Our “deep-ball threat” is Troy Williamson, who was the 1st round bust from Vikings who we traded and got for a 7th, He looked actually like he could catch the ball but its preseason and we’re stilling waiting after Week 1.

Defense: Terrence Knighton, 2009 3rd round draft pick DT, he has been pretty good and he’ll be next to John henderson and be expected to help plug up the middle against the run.

Derek Cox (Pronouce it slowly), He;s almost our 2009 3rd round draft pick (CB), he intercepted Peyton Manning in the endzone and we have high hopes for him so far, so good.

Special Teams:
Josh Scobee (Kicker), almost made a 63 footer and can kick and make FGs from 55- yards. Pretty accurate, good leg.

Brian Witherspoon, also known as “Spoon or Spoon-feed”, he’s a demon when running a straight line; He’s fast, if he gets a hole he cna take it long, so he’s someone to make sure to tackle. He was a big factor in why most of our drives were at the 30 instead of the 20.
