Arizona Cardinals Cut Wide Receiver Lance Long; Signs with Chiefs

Two weeks ago Lance Long beat the odds as the second year undrafted wide receiver made the Arizona Cardinals opening day roster but his stay lasted only one game as the team cut him yesterday. Long didn't have a catch despite taking quite a few snaps on Sunday but his release may have more to do with the injuries to Anquan Boldin, Steve Breaston and Early Doucet than with his actual play on the field. Long was the team's seventh wide receiver but with Boldin, Breaston and Doucet all nursing injuries, Long got a chance to make an impact. Considering that he's now been released, there's a good chance that one, two or even all three receivers could be able to suit up when the Cardinals travel to Jacksonville.

There has been no word on who will take Long's roster spot although early speculation is that it'll be a defensive player. Matt Ware and Kenny Iwebema were both injured against the Niners and at this point it looks like Iwebema will not suit up against the Jaguars. Ware's injury is considered less serious although we'll know more about it after today's practice.

Update: It took former Cardinals OC Todd Haley less than twelve hours to sign Lance Long, which of course means that Long is now a member of the Kansas City Chiefs. It is worth mentioning that Long isn't on their active roster, he's on the practice squad.

PS

Do you think he’ll make it to the practice squad? Perhaps taking Ed Gant’s spot?

It's a possibility

If any receivers sustain any more injuries then the Cardinals will need to insure that position.

Hey, hey, hey hey hey, watch the language, ok? I have a family.

Veteran or Youth

It will be interesting to see who they sign. I think we all saw Long’s departure since his performance in the preseason. I don’t see him being on the PS. I wondered if he would make it to Patrick’s return. Do we bring in someone on DL to replace K. Iwebema? (Is Kenny’s ankle worse than first thought?) Maybe promote Dykes? Maybe Lee Robinson or Harrington? Barksdale is the type of Corner the Cards like- tall and decent speed. Urban suggested he thought it would be a younger player that was brought in. I would be surprised if they bring in a safety. R. Johnson has been playing in nickle packages and I think with Brown they could cover for Ware. Ware’s injury is short term at worse.

Yet the timing is of note… right after the first game. The timing seems premeditated. For me that brings up the possibility of a veteran as many of us have suggested before. If a veteran does not play in the first game then his base salary is not guaranteed. Two come to mind: 1- Hobson. We all thought he was a curious release. Davis had said late in pre-season that Hobson had found a home and knew he had a good thing going. It makes sense to me. 2-Tackle. I still think the Cards are talking to Levi Jones. The AZ native wants starter money but he and the Cards may still be able to reach an agreement. Recent contract adjustments with Fitz and Wilson may have brought some cap flexibility. After the way Gandy and L. Brown played last game I wouldn’t be surprised. Gandy is in a contract year and is over paid at this point. I like the addition of Bridges and think he is a better RT than Brown at this point.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see what comes later today.

Any word on what happened to Iwebema and how long he'll be out?

I think that injury hurts our depth alot on the D-Line rotation….also my dad was upset about the injury because I believe he’s the only Iowa Hawkeye on the team haha.

Iwebema has a sprained ankle....nothing serious but I think Whiz has already said he'll be out this Sunday

Look for Keilen Dykes to be called up from the practice squad.

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Dykes it is.

Cards just announced they added Dykes and brought back Jones to the practice squad.

I had had a feeling

That this would happen, no pro roster can really afford to carry 7 receivers

Thanks for Long guys :)

What do yall think about him do you think he can help out our WR core in KC? Ive heard that he seemed to have a lot of potential but since you guys are so deep at WR he was just the odd man out is that it?

depends on what you're expecting

If you’re looking for the next Wes Welker or some kind of savior at wide receiver (especially this year), I think you guys will be disappointed. I think he proved this preseason (and in his one regular season game) that he’s not ready to produce against NFL caliber corners. He’s got potential but I kind of see him maxing out as that fourth or fifth wide receiver who helps out on special teams and even that may be a year or two away.

Thanks guys I appreciate it

is he more of a possesion receiver or a burner?

by tomahawk44 on Sep 16, 2009 4:09 PM MDT up reply actions

Neither...more of a "thank gawd I held on to the ball for a one yard gain" receiver

We all leave footprints in the sands of time, just watch out for the discarded fish hooks!

by Hawkwind on Sep 16, 2009 10:33 PM MDT up reply actions

lol.....he certainly looked like that in his past three games (two of them in the preseason)

I’d say he’s somewhere in between a possession and a burner. I don’t think his straight line speed is anywhere near the 4.38 that was reported at his pro day and if anything I’d say he’s more quick than fast.

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

I think he'll be great in time

With training he could be a great number four like our Urban, but his greatest contributions at the moment will be special teams. In time he could make his way onto your 53 and work the #5 and someday #4 spot I believe.
