What worries you the most about the Colts this week?

To me, there are 2 huge things to be worried about this week.

1) Of course Peyton Manning and all he can do.  I don't think we can play a vanilla defense against him because I'm not sure our DL can put enough pressure on him.  And the Colts have several playmakers on offense (Wayne, Clark, and the up and comers in Brown and Garcon).  We have to speed things up somewhat or he'll pick us apart all game.  Of course he is as good as anybody when it comes to countering what the defense is throwing at him.  He can recognize a blitz and audible very easily.  I'm not sure how we'll attack that offense, but it will definitely be one huge factor in the game.

2) The Colts DE against our OT.  This one scares the living crap out of me.  In last night's game, the Dolphins were able to manage them somewhat by running some draw plays at them and by giving the tackles help on drop back passing plays.  But when the Dolphins had to move the ball at the end of the game and no help was given, the pressure was there.  Last season the Cards were hesitant to give the tackles any help because it reduced the number of receivers in play.  I don't see how we can leave the tackles alone against these guys.  They are both very fast around the corner.

Thoughts?

Freeney is our OT's worst nightmare

I shutter to think what Freeney and that wicked spin move would do to Gandy or God-forbid Brown if we try to leave those guys on an island. I sure hope that Whiz sticks a TE over there or leaves a back in to chip him because he’ll absolutely kill Warner if it’s a one on one situation.

One thing to remember is that if Peyton does have a ‘kryptonite’ out there it’s the 3-4 defense. The Pats, Steelers and Chargers all give Peyton fits and it’s all about the disguising of blitzes. A-dub, Dansby and the OLB’s will have to be extra careful to disguise blitzes before the snap count because that’s what all that crap he does before the snap is intended to sniff out. For as ‘superman’ as Peyton is sometimes, he’s just like any other QB, put pressure on him and he get’s rattled. In fact it’s even a little worse for him because he’s so immobile (ala Kurt Warner).

One thing that really stood out to me after last night’s game is how important it’ll be to tackle the Colt’s playmakers to prevent ‘run after catch’ opportunities. We’ve got to make them fight for every stinkin’ yard and not give up bomb after bomb the way the Dolphins did. Shut those guys down as soon as they make the catch.

Good point on YAC...

Limiting YAC will be huge. Manning is so good at getting the ball to players so they can run after the catch. Hopefully we can put some pressure on him so that his throws aren’t so perfect.

as does DRC

he's certainly not a mobile QB

but he moves well enough inside the pocket. He’s not quite the statues that guys like Kurt Warner and Kerry Collins are.

It's not just your perceptions that can be wrong. Even your memory is often incomplete or possibly flat out wrong.

by shake n bake on Sep 22, 2009 4:37 PM MDT up reply actions

Warner can still move around in the pocket

He just doesn’t have much speed left in him. But he can still make the little movements that buy him some more time in the pocket.

DRC Vs. Wayne

DRC struggled against a rookie receiver last week, allowing him to get by him several times. If he stuggles like that versus Wayne we could be in for a long day.

The other thing that will be something to look for is what you already mentioned the colts D-Line versus our O-Line. The line has not face a really good DL this season. The Jags DL is probably one of the weakest aspects of that team and the DL of the Niners isn’t as good as we made it look. If the line that showed up against the Jags shows up this Sunday than I think we’ll be fine but if the line that played in week 1 shows up we’ll be screwed.

by Pyromnc on Sep 22, 2009 8:56 AM MDT reply actions

Edit...

The receiver DRC faced last Sunday was Mike Sims-Walker and he is in his 2nd year.

by Pyromnc on Sep 22, 2009 8:58 AM MDT up reply actions

very true, DRC has to play better but matchups like these are what he was drafted for

He’s got to bring his best game to the field this Sunday. I know he’s still developing and his best days are ahead of him but this is the kind of game where we need him to be really good.

Dallas Clark vs A-Dub is the key

In my mind Clark is the top receiving threat at TE in the league. Everyone always talks about Gates and Gonzales, but Dallas Clark in that Indy offense is unstoppable. Clark has 557 yards and 4 TD’s over the last SIX GAMES, he is a HUGE weapon for Manning. Most teams, including the Cardinals. would be happy to see their TE get those kind of stats all year!

I have some confidence in our CB’s holding their own against Wayne and Co, although I sure hope DRC doesn’t have to play Wanye one-on-one too many plays. But no way can any of our LB’s (except MAYBE Dansby) can keep up with Clark. It will be up to Wilson to keep Clark in check, or we may even see Davis come up with some nickel packages with Rolle covering Clark. We keep Clark in check and Wayne gets less than 100 yards and only 1 TD and I think we have a chance.

by StuckinColorado on Sep 22, 2009 9:10 AM MDT reply actions

Wouldn't worry to much about the TE.

In the past the Cards have generally been pretty good against the TE. They held the Niners TEs to 6 catches and 57 yards and the Jags TE got 3 catches for 62 yards but most of that came when the backups came in late in the third quarter.

Last season We held some of the more know TEs to average to not very good games also.
The Seahawk’s J.Carlson had 5 catches for 53 yards in 2 games, the Vikings V. Shiancoe had 1 catch for 8 yards, and the Cowboy’s J. Witten had 4 catches for 55 yards and not touchdowns for any of them. If we can shut down those tight ends we should be able to shut down Clark.

by Pyromnc on Sep 22, 2009 9:26 AM MDT up reply actions

no one shuts down Clark

I actually wouldn’t mind them putting McFadden on Clark when he’s split out wide. McFadden is a physical CB so Clark couldn’t push him around. A-dub will certainly play a big role in keeping him in check but so far they’ve been using him so much around the line of scrimmage that I think he’ll be blitzing a ton this game.

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Clark has to be treated as a receiver

If we treat Clark like an other TE, including Davis, we will be burned all night. He is a big slot receiver more than a TE. His blocking is not bad but isn’t how he impacts the game. He would be my main focus on pass defense in the secondary. Wayne is good but not much different than Bruce and McFadden did well against Bruce. I would key off of Clark in my pass defense schemes.

"His blocking is not bad but isn’t how he impacts the game."

well it is if a team runs a nickel against a 2WR, TE, Clark and RB set or the dime against 3WR, Clark and RB. He’s a pretty solid pass blocker at this point (why you’ll see him in the backfield in splitback sets) and can get a LB blocked with reasonable consistency in the run game, but he has no problems blocking any CB that gets put on him.

by shake n bake on Sep 24, 2009 8:08 PM MDT up reply actions

My point is that I worry a lot more when Clark releases into the route than when he stays in and blocking. No one game plans about Clarks’ blocking and its impact on the running game. But his route running in great and he has surprising speed. Even for someone as athletic as Wilson, Clark is a handful. Indy likes to get Clark matched up with an ILB because they know they have the edge. I think every Card fan would love to have Clark line up as an H-back and block every play. When he stays in and blocks he is average. His impact is in the passing game.

MBN

by mbn on Sep 25, 2009 1:02 PM MDT up reply actions

I kind of disagree with the no-one game plans about Clarks blocking

it does effect the way they play him. If it didn’t they would put a CB on him every time because that’s the most reliable way to get him covered.

He is at his most dangerous when he’s out in routes, but his ability to pass block well and dominate a DB in the run game changes how teams plan for him, making him a more effective pass catcher.

by shake n bake on Sep 25, 2009 2:12 PM MDT up reply actions

The first thing that popped up in my mind is have we had success against TE’s because of Wilson, or is it Antrel?
I think what Miami did last night was very smart. Put a tall DB on Wayne and keep a safety over the top. We need to do that as well, just not sure if we have the ability. The keep Wayne on the left side of the offensive formation, which I believe is where DRC is? His play might be the key factor in the game.
Also, running the ball over and over again against the Colts seems to be a good idea as well.

I'm worried after how they still won the game even though Peyton was only on the field for 15 minutes...

He is one of the few people who is as talented as Warner at picking apart defensive schemes.

It will be a tough game on Sunday, thats all I know.

by JoeCB1991 on Sep 22, 2009 9:21 AM MDT reply actions

We'll need to attack with the run

If the Dolphins showed us something last night it’s draw plays and running the football at them. That opens up so much more for this offense. It let’s us use more play action passes and gives Warner some relief. On defense, somebody quick and physical needs to cover Clark at all times and like everybody already said, we need to pressure Manning.

pressuring Manning is #1 priority in my book

I look at what the Dolphins did slightly different than most. I think they proved last night that running the ball and dominating the TOP of possession is over rated against the Colts. Opposing offenses can play conservative, run the ball, dink and dunk, etc etc etc but the priority #1 is finding some way to slow down Manning.

Our offense is going to score some points against this defense but the result of this game will be how many times we can stop their offense.

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

by Bezekira on Sep 22, 2009 10:53 AM MDT up reply actions

True

But I meant as far as our offense against their D. They looked gassed early in the game just with the amount of rushing the Dolphins did. On defense, it’s always going to be getting after Manning. I’m not scared of their rushing attack, only Manning.

Agreed

Somehow, someway, we are going to have to find a way to hurry Manning, make him throw out of rhythm. There is risk there but if we let him sit back there we are toast.

Our Wide Receivers could dominate the Colts secondary

as long as Kurt can get them the ball. A few draw plays with Beanie and maybe a screen or two with Tim. This should be a fun game to watch.

Watch for the Colts to try and get their running backs involved in the passing game early and often.

by CardsDefense on Sep 22, 2009 11:19 AM MDT reply actions

Colts pass rush is a HUGE concern

I don’t see how the Cards can win this game without successfully establishing the run to slow it down. And not just the threat of the run, but an honest to goodness power running game. Could this be Beanie’s coming out game? I’m very comfortable with Manning on the sidelines. The Colts always seem to be missing a Ted Washington type DT and it seems like they pay for it every year in the Playoffs.

Vegas has Cards as a 2 point favorite.

I’m trying to be a supportive fan here, but how in the world are the Cards favored this week? I just don’t see it even with the home team getting 3 free points.

by jallred350 on Sep 23, 2009 1:50 PM MDT reply actions

Our 12th man will be key.

When that crowd is pumped as I expect it to be, Peyton will burn more TOs or will just have a hard time getting his receivers to hear the audibles. The key to this is getting the ball first and scoring off the rip or getting a quick 3 and out on the Colts.

Life's too short. Be a fan. Orlando Magic, Arizona Cardinals,Tampa Bay Rays and of course "the U"! What a winning combo.

by hevchv on Sep 23, 2009 7:45 PM MDT reply actions

Another key to this game is which rookie back has the best game.

Will it be Doo-Doo Brown or Beanie Segal? With no real tape on either guy, they both could have the advantage over the opposing D’s. Both have pretty good averages but if Beanie could get his first TD, his confidence (and the crowds cheers) could sky rocket.

by hevchv on Sep 23, 2009 7:59 PM MDT up reply actions

In at least the past 2-3 years,

I cannot think of Peyton burning even 1 TO because of crowd noise. He is very used to it. Also, he doesn’t yell audibles to his receivers. He either uses a hand signal or sometimes just a head nod at the receiver.

If I were the Cards, I would want the Colts to get the ball first. The simple reason is because the Colts have always been a better 2nd half team.

Hope this helps.

Man, I need a life...

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: I blazed through my test in 20 minutes and sprinted back to my room just as the MNF theme song ended. Good thing too, with that 1st play. So, my streak of seeing every minute of every game since 2003 Tampa still stands. So, my Chem TA lives (for now).

Ehh...Kills men by the hundreds!

he’ll consume the Cardinals with fireballs from his eyes and bolts of lightning from his ass. He will have to make it quick (say 15 minutes or so) because that night he’s flying to Africa to breast feed AIDS babies.

He’s actually booked for the whole week, next stop will be Afganistan. He is pretty sure he has figured out where Bin Laden is hiding and wants to guide the troops there on camelback himself…Apparently, and I quote, “I have devised a bomb, over the off season, that is shaped like a football. I and only I alone can throw it the necessary distance and a around the corner needed to penetrate Bin Laden’s cavernous lair.”
