Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

What's the price for "Q"?

I'm a writer over at Buc 'Em (the SBN Tampa Bay Buccaneers blog) and wanted to ask a question to the Cardinals faithful.  It's no secret that Anquan Boldin has been unhappy, to put it mildly, with his contract situation.  He's been a good soldier and played on, despite his apparent unhappiness.  If I were a  Cardinals fan, I can see why you want to keep him.  With Pro Bowl talent and back up money, his value is higher than his salary, a winning proposition for the franchise.

But it seems that at some point the break up will occur.  Now, as a Bucs fan, we desperately need help at just about every position, WR being one of them.  As an FSU fan, I've seen Q play for several years.  I'm aware of what an athlete he is, and I also know that sometimes he plays hurt, which can end up hurting the team.

To get to my question (now that I'm passed the 75 word mark) I wanted to ask all of you this.  In terms of trade value, what is the return you are looking for in place of Boldin?  Draft picks or picks and a player are fine.

Thanks for the feedback and good luck as you continue (hopefully) into the playoffs.

Most likely picks.

With where you guys would be picking I would say a 2nd round pick to start with. Than throw in a couple mid round picks, say a 4th and 5th or maybe 5th and 6th.

The 2nd rounder is a definite in trading for Q.

by Pyromnc on Jan 13, 2010 10:47 AM MST reply actions

Ask after the Super Bowl

Q’s value will increase between now and then.

Kellen for Q, straight up?

What, oh, you’re serious, sorry.

A second rounder and fifth rounder may be all the Cards could get, realistically. After the Roy Williams trade last year I’m sure the Cards FO wanted the same but that wasn’t/isn’t realistic.

….and Pyro beats me to the punch.

Timing, Timing, Timing

Q needs a big post season to get his value up so ask us in 4 weeks after we win the SB!

1st round in the second half of the draft or 2nd round if picking in the top half of the draft along with a 4th round pick

by JasonKGME on Jan 13, 2010 10:50 AM MST reply actions

Honestly

Most here want a 1st round pick and a 4th or 5th. Now, as much I would like that I think a 2nd and a 5th is most realistic. Since you had a down season this year and your pics will be high, a 2nd and 5th seems to me like a good trade on paper.
Q brings a lot of fire to our team and is a valuable athlete on and off the field. As much as I love the guy I am positive that Warner is done this season and I think we need to shore up our D for a potential Leinart era.
As far as players, who do you have in terms of OLB’s and DB’s? I think a lot our attention in the draft will be addressing our defense as we will most likely be losing a few athletes this off season.

They are who we thought they were!

by Jesse Reynolds on Jan 13, 2010 10:51 AM MST reply actions

If you got a 2nd and 5th

You could trade your first and 2nd to move up and take a QB because I dont believe Leinert is a quality starting QB.
If you got a young QB he should get atleast 1 year under Warner to learn and your future QB needs could be taken care of

by mississippisaintsfan on Jan 13, 2010 11:35 AM MST up reply actions

I think we could trade Matty to Seatle to reunite with Pete so...

I wouldn’t be so eagor to trade our own picks to move up. Matty for Mike Teel and a pick between the 4-6 rounds. You could have Q for a 2nd, 5th and 7th. With possibly two 5ths, two 6ths and two 7ths, we could gamble on some CBs OLBs and ILBs to develop. The earlier picks could be on a QB, OL and DL. I’d be happy with that.

my first thoughts when Carrols was announced as HC

Here are my questions though. What can we get from Seattle? I know they have 2 picks in the top 15 so maybe they would be willing to give a 2nd rounder? WHAT IF (and I know its a big what if) the reuniting with Petey is all Leinart needs and he ends up being a good QB? I dont see that happening with his lack of arm strength but what if? I have always prefered to trade people OUT of our division.

Keep the feedback coming.

My main concern (as a Bucs fan) was the precedent Jerry Jones set for Roy Williams (1st, 3rd, 6th I believe). I have zero doubts that Boldin is more valuable than Texas Roy. I’ll be honest, in my opinion if all it takes is a 2 and 5 to get it done, I see zero problem with that deal getting done. I would think the asking price might be a bit higher.

Especially considering

the fact that our beloved Bucs have an extra 2nd round pick because we absolutely swindled the Bears into trading it to us for Gaines Adams. LOL. Considering we were hoping to use that 2nd round pick on a WR anyway, I think Boldin would be a much better option for a young QB.

How would you guys feel about Russ Grimm as your HC vs Raheem Morris?

Before you answer, I live in Orlando so I hear all the chatter about him being a mistake. Especially by the guys on WILD 94.1. They are hilarious. Besides, the Bucs are my second favorite team as my wife and I always root for them. I am still a big fan as they are the local team but my heart belongs to Zona.

I would love to have Grimm

as opposed to Morris. Not only was he a great player but he is a great coach with a history of winning. He is due for a head coaching opportunity. Many of us feel Morris was advanced too early. I would be very happy with Russ Grimm as HC and Raheem the Dream being demoted to DC.

Just because Jerry Jones blows his wad

doesn’t mean anyone is going to follow his precedent. I think last year a 2nd and 5th was offered up for Boldin and the Cardinals didn’t go for it. This year they will be more likely to take it as he has only one year left under contract and Early Doucet and Steve Breaston have shown they can take up the slack no problem.

by hadrarius on Jan 13, 2010 2:01 PM MST up reply actions

Hadrarius has a point

I watched that game vs. the Packers and Breaston was showing some flashes that I would be getting excited about if I were a Cardinals fan. If he continues to show flashes like he did that game for the rest of the playoffs, it might make it easier on the Cardinals FO to let Bolding go for a 2nd and 5th.

by IBleedPewter on Jan 13, 2010 2:23 PM MST up reply actions

Those "flashes"

…aren’t anything new. He seems to play well every time Boldin is out, which is frequently, and he’s the best #3 receiver in the league when Boldin is healthy. His production should not have been a surprise at all. The truly promising performance was turned in by Doucet, who is looking like he could be counted on to be a solid #3 WR

On the main topic, as has been said repeatedly a 2nd and 5th would probably be the starting point, but if multiple teams are willing to give up that much for Boldin (and they should be) of course the price rises.

by manphibian on Jan 13, 2010 4:03 PM MST up reply actions

Doucet is Boldin V2.0

by LeeCaz on Jan 13, 2010 4:05 PM MST up reply actions

my thoughts were 2nd & 3rd

if we cant get that done then you take at least a 2nd, 4th, and 5th.

Never do card tricks for the group you play poker with.

by sc464 on Jan 14, 2010 5:19 PM MST up reply actions

Hardly

Boldin is a MUCH better all around athlete than Doucet; he’s truly an elite receiver who maybe doesn’t get enough credit because he’s seen as the #2 to Fitz. Doucet doesn’t have the full package of Boldin, but he does have similar size and strength and surprising RAC ability. Boldin Jr would be a stretch, Boldin 2.0 is false

by manphibian on Jan 13, 2010 4:12 PM MST reply actions

What about DBs

Does anyone think we aught to explore a proven DB as part of a trade package?

by Birdman from Mesa on Jan 13, 2010 4:54 PM MST reply actions

possibly

but player for pick trades are far more common than player for player, and they are much easier to speculate on. I would guess that the team would value an above average starting corner about the same as a 1st/2nd rounder, but maybe the organization has a higher opinion of McFadden than I do.

by manphibian on Jan 13, 2010 5:10 PM MST up reply actions

Who has a surplus of DBs...

…and also wants a top WR (with one year left on his contract) and has the payroll capacity to resign him? Answer that and ROTB could discuss who the good DB trade targets are.

Done and done.

I love the promise of Johnson, but w/ Freeman, who wants to develop him?

Too much of a project.

Might as well draft Tebow in the 2nd or 3rd round for less money.

by hevchv on Jan 14, 2010 12:05 PM MST up reply actions

I respectfully disagree

Johnson can’t be that expensive…. he was drafted in the fifth round.

Plus he now has SOME NFL experience playing against 1st string defenses. He didn’t do that badly considering the tools he had to work with. Besides he would be a major upgrade over BSP for 3rd string QB. He’s young and smart, let him sit a year and he might beat out Matt to start after Kurt retires. I think this kid could have a bright future in this league if he’s put in the right situation.

by CardsDefense on Jan 14, 2010 3:29 PM MST up reply actions

My mistake.

I confused him with their 1st QB rookie. He would be a great ad cheap option.

money vs victory

I think it’s safe to say that Boldin would have a better chance of winning a super bowl in 2011 if he stayed compared to moving to Tampa (and several other franchises)
Is it possible that the front office could force him to sign a slightly lower contract if the alternative is getting shipped to a random losing/“rebuilding” team?
Maybe we’re just not quite that good yet …

Likely teams for Q?

Q is from Florida, so any of the three teams (Jacksonville, Miami, Tampa Bay) could be players for him. Tampa would offer the higher draft picks. Baltimore, Cleveland, and Chicago could all be potential suitors for Q. Any of the other NFC West teams could also draw interest, but I wouldn’t want to trade within the division.
