With the 25th pick in the 2010 NFL Draft
Who would you take?
I am sad to say that the 2009 season is over. On that note the 2010 off-season has started. In my previous post i have listed the Arizona Cardinals F/A and RFA that will be addressed before the draft. As well as the potential F/A available from other teams. But this post is about our 1ST ROUND pick and i think we grab Navarro Bowman from Penn State. A very athletic ILB that needs to put on a little weight but old john lott will take care of that.
Who is your 1st pick and tell me a little bit about your choice and why

ILB
The LB position is the spot of most need. Aging players need to be replaced with younger more athletic ones. We took 2 OLB last year. It’s time to address the inside.
Linebacker
The D-Line is good, but some good pass-rushing Linebackers are necessary for the 3-4 defense.
Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears fan.
I can't stand band-wagoner fans, stick with your team, throughout the good and the bad.
The Cards should take the best player available on the board.
As long as that player is not a WR or TE or Safety. If Warner retires, the team has $10 million to spend and another $11 or so million by letting Dansby walk and by trading Boldin. Thinking of a trade scenario where Boldin leaves to a franchise that needs receiving AND has surpluses pieces that fit the Cards needs at CB, LB, DT, or DE: anyone want to venture a guess? It’s either that or trade for picks — an idea I think has some merit though is the box-of-chocolates route.
I’m very optimistic about next year.
2 questions.
1. The bulk of Kurt’s contract has already been paid (front loaded). What will his cap hit be for next season?
2. If a player retires, is his team still on the hook for his salary?

#2 - I don't think it does
Kurt, in this case, would go on the reserve/retired list (or something like that) and I don’t think we’d have to pay his salary. The cap hit doesn’t matter b/c there won’t be a cap next year.

Disclosure: I did not know what I was writing about (concerning Warner) above
I had to look this stuff up. You are corret that Warner’s contract was very much front loaded — a $4 million dollar base salary for two years and a $15 million dollar bonus paid out in 2009. This means that if Kurt retires, the savings will only be $4 million, not $10 million like I had written.
As far as the salary cap question: the bonus is spread out over the length of the contract for salary cap purposes. Meaning that if Kurt were to play, for cap purposes, he’s taking up $11.5 worth of room. And I’m pretty sure that if he were to decide to retire, this $11.5 million toward the cap is still there and does not go away.
As to retirement’s affect on salary: it’s my understanding that the unilateral right of either the owner (cut player) or player (decide to retire) to end the contract early means that neither player or owner incurs any more benefits or detriments. The benefits that owners get are players’ services of playing. The benefit that the player gets is the negotiated salary (though any money expressly gauranteed will still be paid). The detriments of both are the flip-side of the benefits. However, since the bonus has already been paid, Warner essentially was paid $19 million for last year’s season no matter what he decides to do next year. By the way, he’ll make just $4 million if he decides to play next season. The writing looks to be on the wall.

Nose takle
The cards need a dominate player at that position to free up some of the other guys. Lack of pressure on Drew was one of the biggest reasons for the loss.

nose tackles don't create pressure
On most passing downs a true nose tackle is standing on the sidelines.

LB
With the more than likely departure of Dansby, I agree that the LB position should be a focus, whether it be first or second round. We still have yet to see Cody Brown play, but we need LBs and an improved pass rush.
I think Bowman (Penn St.) and Spikes (FU) are decent draft options as well as looking at free agency (great players available).
I would lean towards a proven player via free agency, but the team CANNOT afford to overpay for a LB with the need to resign players. The Cardinals can ill afford to disrupt team chemistry by losing role players and contributors in order to pay for an overpriced LB.

I agree, if Dansby leaves than ILB is the biggest need
I’d be ok with Spikes in the first but not Bowman. Who are the “great players” available in free agency?

With the 26th pick, who would realistically be available at ILB to fit our needs?

It's looking like Spikes could fall that far.
He was ranked really high before the season started but has been slipping ever since.
Yea Spikes should be
McClain has clearly overtaken him in at this point and ILB’s tend to fall in the draft. I’d be surprised if he’s gone by the time we’re on the clock.

Still need a tackle.
Warner was getting hit on almost every play yesterday. We really need an upgrade at LT, Jeremy Bridges is a backup and Mike Gandy shouldn’t be starting at LT either. Even if Warner does not come back next season it would be nice to be able to keep Leinart, assuming he is the starter if Warner leaves, healthy.
Of course this all changes if Dansby leaves but until we know with 100% certainty, I believe this is our biggest need.
Yes! A big, nasty, physical, true left tackle to be the lynch pin of the O-line for years to come.
Lets finally get one. Please! Quit throwing in guys that just create question marks and concerns. But I also think if you can find that aggresive, hard nosed ILB then get him. And maybe make a play for Julius Peppers? We need a dynamic playmaker at OLB and Peppers wants 2 play OLB in a 3-4 D. And since we run that hybrid scheme I think he would be a great fit and would take a lot of pressure off these younger linebackers and allow them to develop a little easier. Maybe a reasonable 2 year deal without committing fully to him and without taking away from our priorities (Rolle, Dockett,Boldin(?), Breaston, etc.).

It's too early to tell what our biggest need will be
obviously if Dansby leaves we really need an ILB. If Kurt retires we need a qb. If Antrel Rolle is let go Safety is a huge need. No matter what happens we need a tackle.
Onlt time will tell
Completely agree, it's too early to tell
Dansby is the biggest variable in all of this. If he stays then we don’t need an ILB at all. If he goes then it’s our #1 need.

Hayes is a tackling machine, but his coverage is suspect.

Won't cards actually have the 26th pick?
Jets, Colts, Minn, Saints are last 4.
SD would be 28 (AFC 2 seed)
Dallas would be 27 (NFC 3 Seed)
Cards 26 (NFC 4 Seed)
Ravens 25 (wild card AFC)

I know I didn't pick the Jets
I was thinking the Chargers would make it to the Super Bowl, shows what I know.
And yeah, we would have the 26th pick in all likelyhood

I vote BPA...
as long as it isn’t a WR/RB/TE/S. I think arguments could be made for improvements and/or depth at any other position.
If we can't renogotiate Trel's contract,
is there a S on our team who could start in his place?
Rashad Johnson
Matt Ware
Hamza Abdullah

it would have to be Johnson
Judging from Abdullah’s play over the past two games, I doubt he’ll be back next season.
Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
Only reason he was here was because of Ware's injury.
He could make it on the practice squad but definitely won’t be on the roster.
I doubt he's PS eligible, if we really need him he'll be on the streets again next DEC

Forgot to take into acount PS eligibility.
Your right though, he should be available in free agency if we need him that badly.
Dumb Question Time
What makes a player practice squad eligible? I don’t think I’ve ever heard the rules involved here.
Thanks.
a player cannot participate on the practice squad for more than three seasons, or if he has accrued a year of NFL experience (six or more games on a club’s 53-man active roster or official Injured Reserve list.) If the player was on the active list for fewer than 9 games during their “only Accrued Season(s)”, he maintains his eligibility for the practice squad.
Here is the source, there is more on the PS at the bottom of the page.
Uhmm
Walter Football has Colt McCoy going to the Cards in the 4th round…
I would be so happy if we got him, but does anyone else see this as a reach

Yeah I'm fine with him in the 4th.

A few things
1st—I sure hope we don’t lose Dansby and then go after Peppers. With the lack of talent in this year’s FA market, Peppers is going to want to get paid too and he’s 30 years old, which kind of negates our want to go for younger, quicker talent at linebacker.
2nd — If we lock Dansby up, I still say e take a serious look a ILB as a first pick. If we let Dansby go, then we definitely draft ILB first. Even if Cody Brown turns out to be a dominating player, it never hurts to have an immensely talented linebacker corps. Regardless of what happens with Dansby, we should look at linebacker first.
3rd — We need to address our secondary coverage. I’m not saying draft a corner, but we need to solve the problem. Maybe Toler is the answer. Maybe a Boldin trade gives us a solid corner. Who knows! I just want better coverage.
4th—Tackle. If we do end up starting Leinart, we need a tackle upgrade drastically!!
Do not take a QB, regardless of who is on he board, until the late rounds. I’m sorry but I just don’t think we need to draft and sign a qb right now. We can wait until next year if need be.
