Just a few offseason scenarios to ponder...

With the Seatle Seahawks firing their Head Coach, Jim Mora, and already having fired their GM what's next for them?

Well the hot news around town is that Pete Carrol is extremely interested in the job providing he would have control, a la Mike Shanahan. This seems very likely as his coaching resume is quite astonishing. Yes he was with the Jets and the Patriots and yes he was fired, but he did have a winning record when he left. But hold on Cowboy. There still seems to be one thing missing. A new GM. And Stephen Keim can't be ruled out just yet for the job. Yep you can see where this is going. If Keim were to get the job I have no doubt that his new head coach, if he had his way, would be Russ Grimm. If that were to happen and with an already below average O-line, where would that leave us?  Hmmm.

Next it is no longer a rumor that Charlie Weis could be the next OC for the Chiefs. It has been made official. Now the next major rumor floating around is that Romeo Crennel could be the next DC. If this were to happen, and it is very possible, could the Chiefs be trying to recreate "the Dynasty" better known as the 21st Century New England Patriots? At least they picked a fine organization to model after. Matt Cassel, Mike Vrabel, Matt Gutierrez and last but not least, the GM himself Scott Pioli. I'm sure there are more but that is all I can think of off the top of the dome. Any thoughts or ideas?

Seattle

Looks like Pete Carroll will be both Head Coach and Team President.

Meh, I don't think he will do that well in the NFL.

A man from Dallas who bleeds red, not silver and blue.

Coaching Changes

Pete Carrol does have a winning record as a pro coach. He knows the game from an X and O’s stand point. He has a defensive background and would be an excellent DC for someone in the NFL. But he is a college coach first and foremost. He was run out of both of his previous jobs in New York (Jets) and in New England by Robert Kraft. Carrol is a rah rah type of leader and it just didn’t fly with grown men during his earlier stint as a NFL HC. He’s a “players coach” that wanted to get along with his players and the NFL landscape is littered with these types. If you don’t believe me ask……..Jim Mora Jr.

Speaking of Mora Jr. I’m sad to see him lose his job in the Emerald City. He is the Classic players coach and depending on who he is replaced with, the Cardinals are no longer assured of those two wins in the NFC West. The management of the Seahawks might just replace Mora Jr. with someone similar from a philosophical coaching stand point. This would be a mistake by them.Good for the Cardinals.

It is interesting how Charlie Weis landed so softly as a coordinator after failing miserably at Notre Dame. The NFL nation will find out how good Weis is. KC is very short in the talent department on the offensive side of the ball sans Jamal Charles and Bowe. Let’s see if Weis can make chicken salad out of chicken soup. Matt Cassel is no Tom Brady when it comes to command of an offense or throwing the football. Talk about being overpaid. 60 Minutes should launch an investigation into how Matt Cassel got his contract. If Weis can duplicate some of his NE success in KC then they should build a statue for Weis in KC. Crennel to KC would be good for Haley not so much for our friend Clancy Pendergast. Crennel can coach defense.

Lastly, not one of the Parcells or Belichick deciples will have great succes as Head Coaches. I think they are all flawed to some degree in different areas except Sparano down in Miami. Sparano’s got the goods.

for all the above comments. If Seattle wants to make yet another change this quickly, go ahead. Carroll was always a decent defensive coach at the NFL level but his offensive knowledge is what landed him back in the college game, and I seriously doubt he’s capable of wearing more than one hat effectively.

The other changes, don’t really care. The Chiefs can try all they want to re-create what New England did, good luck doing it with out Belichick and Brady. The only scenario that scares me is Russ Grimm leaving. In spite of the chronic negativity surrounding it, the progress he has made with our O-Line since arriving has been very sound.

Losing Grimm would be a blow. But it seems to only be a matter of time.
Honestly, I am not too scared though. I think Whisenhunt and the Bildwells will be able to find a very suitable replacement and hopefully offer him some additional talent to work with.

They are who we thought they were!

Russ Grimm

It bothers me that a guy like Grimm has not gotten serious consideration for NFL HC jobs. The majority of the owners are looking for the sexy name or some assistant that’s on the latest and greatest coaching staff. Lots of mistakes are being made with these recent hires not to mention the money owed to these guy’s when they’re fired. The recycling of coaches is what keeps the majority of teams consistently below 500 and new candidates out the HC ranks.

For the reasons listed above Grimm will remain on the Cardinals staff for the forseeable future. This makes me extremely happy. Now Russ Grimm……. we can go out on limb…….and say he feels different about being passed over every off-season.

well, he is supposed to be the running game coordinator, and the Cards don’t exactly have the best rushing attack in the league…

You keep it real 75 (easier to dialogue)

Grimm to the best of knowledge has never coordinated an offense during his coaching career. The question has to be asked why? His current job desription of RGC is not a position from one gets elevated to HC under normal circumstances. And yes, your point is a valid one, the running game is still ranked near the bottom of the league. How much of this is a process of Grimm and his ability or Whisenhunt calling plays that inhibit the growtrh of the running and thus having an impact on how “effect” Russ Grimm is as RGC?

This is the reason I like more clearly define roles on coaching staffs. It just makes it easier for types such as myself to be pinpoint accurate in assesing the staffs performance.

i keeps it real

and that’s kind of the crux of the issue, is the running game not better because of Whiz, or because of Grimm? Chicken or the egg argument.

But you can go by what you do know, and that’s that Grimm has shown to be a very good offensive line coach, but with his current responsibility, he hasn’t shown that. Again, whether that’s his fault or not is pretty difficult to say.

by KDean75 on Jan 10, 2010 10:29 AM MST up reply actions

I'll go there (not that you won't)

I think Whiz is the problem. Grimm is a HOF O-Lineman. He believes in a physical down hill run game. Nether Hightower or Wells got over 20 carries in a game this season (am I right on that?) And the passing game lacked consistency from first halves to the second half of games. We can’t lay that at the feet of the assistant coaches. That’s on the play caller. We all know who that is.

Bottom line for me——-Whiz is not a great play caller. The season has shown that to be the case. The game tape will show it. It’s just not up for debate.

by Cardsfan81 on Jan 10, 2010 2:19 PM MST up reply actions

I'll say this again.

Grimm only got the title RGC to add to his resume for a HC position. The PGC will be the actual OC come next year.

Life's too short. Be a fan. Orlando Magic, Arizona Cardinals,Tampa Bay Rays and of course "the U"! What a winning combo.
