Arizona Cardinals Fall 38-35 To Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Despite the late comeback attempt, the Arizona Cardinals suffered their fourth defeat of the season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Max Hall threw his first career touchdown pass but also threw two passes to the defense. In relief of Hall stood Derek Anderson, who played relatively better then what we've seen so far this season. After the late comeback, the defense gave up a key fourth down and the offense couldn't recapture the lead. The two things that hurt the Cardinals were the two pick-sixes and the quick offensive output by the Bucs at the end of the game. I won't go into anymore detail, so consider this a post game thread more than anything.

Yes, the QB situation is a mess...

but this game was winable if not for some poor play calling – going for 7 in the first half when we could have had 3, Anderson throwing down the middle at the end when we just needed 3 to tie… but yeah, we need to sort out the QB situation for next year, I’d be surprised if anything gets done this season.

Everything correct

except we are half game behind Rams!!

Troy Smith was on the 49ers roster since September.

Just to set the record straight on that. Otherwise you have pretty much summed up where I’m at. We would be a winning team if only for a decent QB.

+ and -

Positives:

Beanie Wells scored his second touchdown of the year, and LaRod Stephens-Howling scored his first Rushing Touchdown of his career. Larry Fitzgerald had two Touchdowns after only catching two in the first six games. None of the running backs fumbled.

Derek Anderson did make some good throws. Hall made a few good throws as well, but he made two horrible ones.

The Cardinals ran for 100 yards, and they threw for 296.

Gerald Hayes had a good game in his return to the lineup, with five Tackles and his Fumble Return for a Touchdown.

Joey Porter and Will Davis each had a sack, and the one by Davis forced the Bucs to go for a 53 yard Field Goal that was blocked by Kerry Rhodes.

Steve Breaston had 8 catches for a career high 147 yards in his first game back from knee surgery.

The Cardinals did try to fight back.

Negatives:

The Defense could not consistently stop the Buccaneers Offense. Following the 2nd Pick 6 they were completely deflated until the Touchdown by Hayes.

While Derek Anderson and Max Hall made some nice throws, the combined to throw 4 picks. And for those of you who are calling for John Skelton, he is even more raw than Max Hall. Not happening, and even if it did the results would not be good.

A bad call by the Refs took away an Interception by Adrian Wilson. They called Pass Interference, and almost none of us saw him do anything that looked like PI.

Playcalling. Kurt Warner isn’t the Quarterback anymore. The Cardinals can’t go out and sling the ball like they tried to do today. Beanie Wells, LaRod Stephens-Howling, and Tim Hightower need to get more chances to run the ball. The Cardinals also need to become more of a ball control power running offense until one of the Quarterbacks can step it up.

Josh Freeman completed several long passes. Greg Toler was burned on one long TD pass that gave the Bucs a 21-14 lead.

It's pretty sad

That this team played that good, but that bad. We should’ve won this game, but we made way too many mistakes.

396 yards on Offense and we couldn’t come up with the win? 35 points scored by the team? Are you kidding me?

by Skii on Oct 31, 2010 7:32 PM MDT up reply actions

im sorry

but today was brutal. im officially done with ken whiz. i was at the game. at least hall is hit when he throws an int. but instead whiz wants to stick with his guns and give anderson a chance. breaston and doucet were hurt on consecutive plays because of DA, and then he stares down fitz, throws a pick and loses us a game. time to make russ grimm HC

I'm still on the Coach Whiz bandwagon

But he’s doing a lot to make sure his bandwagon is light. He’s making some calls that make you want to scream, and he’s not handling the QB situation week after week. We’re going into Week 8. This season is almost half way over. We’re still not certain of this team.

He needs to hire a clock management Coach, and could use some advice on which plays to call when in the Red Zone at the end of the game.

Look out below!

Someone warn the Niners that the Cards are on the way down to capture the basement from their grip.
Hey Drew, the Cardinals didn’t fall to the Bucks, they were pushed!
The guys doing the pushing were the HC with the help of his two hunchbacks, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum.
The greed and arrogance of Whiz are not only telling but losing games for our guys. What would cause Whiz to go away from a running attack that was working to a passing attack that has a 100% failure rate?
What band wagon? I have a feeling it got repo’ed when Anderson left the key in it. Remember, that last pass that he threw? Who could have seen that coming? Obviously not the Whiz.
The HC is so intent on proving that he has the highest football IQ in the room, in Phoenix, in Arizona and in the entire world of the NFL that he has convinced himself that his intellect will overcome the physical limitations of his chosen QBs.
The Niners are only one game behind us in wins, with a bunch left to play and two against S.F.
The Whiz better unwrap his brand new QB, Skelton, and to hell with his fragile psyche. Did the Rams worry about their rookie QB and getting his feelings hurt and his uniform dirty?
“You want to know what really makes me sad? You do, you jackwagon! Why don’t we visit namby pamby land and see if we can find you some self confidence!!? Tissue? You big baby!!!”
While I’m at it, how greedy and impatient do you have to be, to instruct both QBs to throw the ball in the red zone? Especially after your personal picks to replace Warner and Leinart had already given the Bucks 21 points off of interceptions?
Bandwagon? A clown car would be more apropo. “We are all Bozo’s on this bus!” “In Whiz you Trust?” “Hows that hopey changey thing working out for you?”

A few thoughts

Everyone, please, get off the John Skelton bandwagon. He’s not ready. He’ll do even worse. We’ll ruin his career if we start him this soon.

Derek Anderson needs to get cut. I’m sorry DA, I wanted you to do good, but it just isn’t working out. But hey, at least you have 2007 to remember. As for Max Hall, we rushed him. He’s throwing too many interceptions. He shouldn’t have been started this early in his career. He showed a lot of potential, but he obviously doesn’t have what it takes to succeed at the moment.

I’m angry that the Cardinals didn’t have a better plan for this season. This is pretty pathetic, but at some parts of the game, I actually thought of throwing Kerry Rhodes or someone who played QB back in High School to take the snaps for us. That means you’ve hit an all time low as a fan.

All three of them aren't the answer at the moment

DA, because of his mistakes, Max Hall, because he needed more time to become an NFL starter, and John Skelton, because he’s a rookie too, and would probably do worse.

Pick up someone else? That’s all I’ve got. I’m running out of ideas to salvage this season.

by Skii on Oct 31, 2010 7:53 PM MDT up reply actions

Random thoughts

They’re going to have to get an answer in terms of Hall or Skelton. We can’t carry both, as Anderson isn’t viable as a starter. I know that Skelton is ‘too raw’ and he’s a late pick so he can be given time to develop, but if it’s a lost season – and fan though I am, I think it is – shouldn’t we get him some reps? Not asking to have him named starter – just to get him some playing time, get a better gauge on his potential. As for Hall – I love for the underdog to succeed, but he simply looks outsized and overmatched on the field. I’ll grant the one interception wasn’t entirely his fault – but what we saw in preseason isn’t showing up now.

We can’t go into next year with Anderson and Hall swapping starts with both of them playing inconsistently at best. Anderson may be serviceable as a backup, but we need a true starter and not a ongoing controversy. Ditch Hall, keep Anderson as a backup and get who? I’d doubt we’ll be in a position to grab Luck and I think the jury is still out on Locker.

LSH and Rhodes both contributed. I know that punt returning and kick returning are two different things, but I’d love to see LSH get a chance at punts, he’s just a lot more decisive and explosive than Roberts.

Wells never really got going in the running game – not sure how much of that is on him and how much of it was lack of comittment to the run.

Gadget plays generally suck, but with weapons like LSH & Breaston and QBs like Anderson and Hall, maybe they should be running more than one or two a game?

The defense is also wildly inconsistent as well – great play followed by complete collapse – they put too many points on us, even if 14 of them had nothing to do with the defense. I started Blount at RB in a couple fantasy leagues simply because you can count on the Cards to give up 100yds and at least 1TD to whatever RB they are facing – this has to change. Seriously – Blount?

There is just too much talent here for such poor play overall. I think Rhodes was an upgrade over Rolle. Breaston has been every bit a good option as a 2nd receiver as Boldin was – though Doucet hasn’t been as impressive in the slot as I’d expected – I’m putting that on the QB problems though. Dansby seems to be missed though.

On a completely random note – Chris Collinsworth is a jackass – why is he allowed to call games?

We'd ruin John Skelton's career by starting him

He’d probably break his back with the amount of hits he’d have to take.

by Skii on Oct 31, 2010 7:51 PM MDT up reply actions

"But if it’s a lost season – and fan though I am, I think it is – shouldn’t we get him some reps?"

You’re implying that we should start him. Besides, giving him any reps will be disastrous to his career and the team.

by Skii on Oct 31, 2010 8:31 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah, I'm not buying that...

sorry, but he’s got to play eventually – if he’s so fragile that playing a few plays here or there would ruin him, he’s not going to be a NFL QB.

by Cryptopunk on Oct 31, 2010 8:49 PM MDT up reply actions

Alright, fine

Let’s play him, and do terrible because he’s not ready for the NFL. In fact, why don’t we just start posting Mock Drafts?

I’m sorry, but I don’t want this to be a rebuilding season. We’re coming off two years of playoff success. This isn’t a rebuilding season.

by Skii on Oct 31, 2010 9:03 PM MDT up reply actions

We're going to have to disagree on that...

it’s a rebuilding season at best.

I’m a Cards fan and I want them to win. But the QB situation is a disaster that isn’t getting fixed this year, so let’s make the best out of it and figure out which rookie is going to be our development project and which one needs to be cut after the season.

Skelton likely will play poorly, but he needs some live snaps at full speed for the coaching staff to have something to work with him on, and for him to experience the game at speed. He doesn’t need to start or full games, but when games are out of hand – like San Diego – they need to get him some reps, whatever he does with them.

by Cryptopunk on Oct 31, 2010 9:23 PM MDT up reply actions

It was his best performance of the year...

But he’s not going to change – look at all the years in Cleveland. Any Browns fan will tell you – yeah, you’ll get some great throws, but ultimately the bad will outweigh the good. I’m fine keeping him as a veteran backup – but he’s not a starter.

by Cryptopunk on Oct 31, 2010 7:43 PM MDT up reply actions

Then who should start? Max? Skeleton?

We should start those two if we were 1-6 or 2-5, but we’re 3-4 and still very much in the race for the NFC west title and a spot in the playoffs. DA is our best and only option out of a poor bunch of qb’s

Playoffs

If we make it into the playoffs it will be stumbling backwards with a push from the Rams and Seahawks.

Open wide!

Open your eyes! This is not basketball and Max Hall is not Steve Nash. He was a bad choice when he was picked up and a bad call now. The same with Anderson. Who in their right mind would hand over the team to these two?
Maybe a huge ego that wants to have a high draft pick and claim success in the future. Someone who craves accolaids about his smarts. Well done, screw the fans, and to hell with winning with someone else’s draft pick.
“Get that Leinart guy out of my sight! I didn’t pick him! How can I take credit for the Cardinals’ success if we succeed now, with him? They would never pin a losing season on me! I am the Whiz! This season is Leinart’s fault. Yeah, that’s the ticket, point to the guy who used to be QB here and Denny Greene. Pretend I am responsible for the good stuff only. All the bad stuff, not my doing!” “Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who’s the smartest, most deceptive head coach of all?” “Fans, what fans? Off with their heads!”

ANYONE PLAYING QB IS AN IMPROVEMENT

literally anyone off the street could lose a game for us.

We have no chance of winning with DA as QB.
We have very little chance with Max Hall. Even less with Skelton.
Culpepper? Jeff Garcia? Anyone else from the UFL?

Agreed, DA should start.

DA should start. After watching the game again, gotta love the DVR, DA played excellent. You are right LSH got popped pretty good, that one could have been scored a fumble and not an INT. LSH is too small to be catching the ball across the middle like that. The INT in question here is the one into triple coverage. I ask this…how many times did we see warner throw the same pass in the red zone? Yes Doucet was having tea all by himself and would have been an easy six, but looking at the play several times, there should have been a PI called. The guy that made the pick actually was beat until he pulled on FITZ to change his angle and cut underneath for the pick. FITZ looks like he is more worried about that than finishing the play and going for the ball. DA looked great with the touch passes. The sideline bomb and deep seam pass to Breaston were touch passes that DA has yet to make this year. Looked great there. So yes, I agree, DA should start. What they need to do is run the ball more. On halls first few series, especially the first two, they started out with three consecutive passes resulting in punts. TB had not even loaded up the box to stop the run. Let the Oline do what they do best and Fitz can pout because he isnt getting the ball. Isnt it about winning?

Week 8 and the season is over?

For so many years, all I’ve wanted was a chance to compete for a playoff spot. I hate that we’re so discombobulated on offense and defense.
We have good players. We have a good head coach. There are so many teams with worse problems than ours, yet without a QB…ALL OTHER ASPECTS OF THE TEAM GET WORSE.
This was a winnable game even with all the mistakes. Even with a 4th down screw up. Even with 2 pick 6’s. Down by 3, DA gets picked deep in our own territory (off LSH) but we we got a big sack and a blocked FG attempt. We were driving for the leading TD with under 3 minutes to go and DA threw the WORST PASS I HAVE EVER SEEN. He threw it right to the defender while starring down Fitz who was sandwiched by 2 guys all over him. That play was on a 1st down from the 20 yard line. TB was out of timeouts. Why weren’t we running the ball? Why weren’t we trying run the clock to score with no time left for them to come back. (if we only got a FG then OT).
A win today and we would be tied for 1st in the division with home games coming against Seattle and St.Louis, and both games still against SF.
I’ve been a Cards fan sinc ehte early 70’s. It’s been frustrating and nauseating over the years, so this is nothing new. The last 2 seasons with the Superbowl run and consecutive division tittles have spoiled me. I WANT TO WIN!!!

No more night. I have seen the light. Let it shine on bright.
