NFL Fanbases ranked by the Bleacher Report
Cardinals are #30. Can't say that I'm surprised considering all of the bandwagoners and fair weather fans the team gets now that they have actually started to win games.
I remember when Sun Devil Stadium used to have less than half of the seats filled up for a home game. Now lets just hope that people stick with the team even if there is a bad year coming up to see how faithful they will really be.

Wasn't a season ticket holder or anything
and I saw some putrid football games at Sun Devil. Cards/Bucs Cards/Browns Cards/Pack
also same some great ones Cards/Chargers Cards/Vikes Noooooooooo! I even Remember going to a Colts/Falcons exhibition game and a bunch of Wranglers/New Wranglers/Outlaws games.
Probably saw 20 Cardinals games at Sun Devil, moved from the valley and have only actually been to UofP once. (49ers OT Loss :( ) never sure if I should be proud or embarrassed about the current fans. No it is great, but I feel like a founding father.
Team is starting to get respect, but
the fans still need to earn it. I’m ok with that. The nest is definitely becoming a home field advantage, but it still takes time and consistency.

There were some great games in 1998 that I remember.
They have the highlights from that year on Hulu too.
I was never able to to one of the games at Sun Devil Stadium even though I don’t live very far away from it since my parents never wanted to spend any money on the games back then.
I have been to a couple of games at University of Phoenix Stadium [the Rams game where they actually had the roof open!] and the crowd was good there. I am glad that there are more fans now, but I am worried about how many of them would leave if the Cardinals have a bad year.
I have always been a fan of the team, even when they sucked. I would always root for them, even though I was expecting failure. It was nice to see things start to turn around the last three years.
Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears fan.
I can't stand band-wagoner fans, stick with your team, throughout the good and the bad.
Here is one of the pictures I took if anyone wants to see it.

I think this was right before the Nugent kick.

I like how the guy put his team in first.
I chose water over wine... Jars of formaldehyde... think of all the things I missed... Why'd you make me a scientist?
This report is a joke
I read through his analysis and the criteria he set up in the beginning doesn’t seem to match his reasoning’s in each respective teams articles.
Another thing, I really don’t get how bandwagon fans are the worst thing in sports? I mean are not most fans a bandwagon fan at sometime that for some reason or another decided to stay hitched? I was born in LA and my family is from LA, I should be a die hard Lakers fan but I am not (I admit a dirty secret, while I am not a DIE hard fan, I still like Kobe and Lakers). The first team I rooted for and began to watch regularly were the 49ers. My dad thought Montana was the second coming and Young his first disciple. Yet I moved to AZ and jumped on the AZ bandwagon in 2004 when my favorite college player was drafted to the team. Who knew 6 years later a Card loss in the postseason would actually lead me to drink… Now granted, not all fans stay hitched and many move on but that’s with EVERY sport. You have to win to keep fans, and bandwagon fans show that the team is moving in the right direction IMO. Ie Colts and Saints.
Sure you have fans in the “storied” franchises that were “born in,” ie, Grandfather was a Stealers fan, Dad was a Stealers fan, therefor I am a Stealers fan (again, just an example. Obviously I have no love for the Stealers). But that doesn’t take away from the fact that most fans, and especially out-of-area fans are just that, bandwagon fans. I only knew two Stealer fans in California before the last SB and all of sudden I couldn’t walk anywhere without running into a Terrible Towel. People I had known forever who were dawning Stealer colors or emblems would explain, “oh my dads, brothers, former wife lived in Pittsburgh and we got along well, that’s why it’s okay for me to like the Stealers and why I am not a bandwagon fan like these other dudes…” or “I have always been a Stealers fan! My mom’s family is from Pittsburgh” when I know they have a Charger banner in their room…
Bandwagon fans are apart of the game and I see no negatives in it. Only the elitists and those who have nothing of substance to say or argue rag on teams for having/being a “bunch of bandwagon fans.”
One more thing that I would like to argue, though I admit it isn’t the strongest argument. The greater Pittsburgh area has about 2.5 million people. That’s just under half of Arizona’s population (5.9 Mil). Honestly I think Green Bay should be the number 1 fan base. I mean people hand down their season tickets in their wills… Having the 49ers 10th? One of the greatest dynasties ever, where their fans DOMINATE California, being in the third largest state in the US and their only ten?… KC in the top 5? What? Give me a break. I’ll take Cleveland (you can’t compete with “The Pound”, Pitt, SF, Dallas, and GB in some order, and that’s debatable.
They are who we thought they were!
Agreed about Green Bay
With the bandwagoners, I am only talking about the people who would find another team if we wind up having a losing record next year. If they stay on the bandwagon after that happens, I’m fine with them.

Good points Jesse
Agree on the bandwagon part. That’s part of sports. Casual fans won’t root for the home team if they’re terrible. That’s life. But if they come out when the team is winning then all is good in my book. The more the better.
What? I didn't break it, I was just testing its durability, and then I placed it in the woods becuase it's made out of wood and I just thought he should be with his family.
Revenge of the Birds
Definitely a fun debate
It’s true that occasionally my comparisons tend to be exaggerated. Can you tell? hehe.
The reason I don’t like bandwagon fans is because I think it takes away from the home team advantage. Most of us that went to games in Sun Devil Stadium remember when Cardinals fans were always outnumbered. Teams that came to Arizona to play used to consider it a home game. Now, that isn’t often the case. Yet, when certain teams come here to play (Packers, Cowboys, etc) it tend to still veer in that direction. Do you guys follow Dockett on Twitter? All season long it was one of his biggest complaints. He would emphasize the need for TRUE fans because, rather than it be deafening when the Cards were on defense, it would be the opposite.
As a loyal Cards fan, it embarasses me whe someone comes from out of state and mocks me and my team because of the fans. This happened during the Green Bay (regular season, not playoffs) game so maybe the wound is too fresh and that’s why I’m so big on it right now. Sitting next to me (having purchased a Cardinals fans’ season tickets) was a couple from Green Bay. They were perfectly nice during the game and were just cheering for their team. However, towards the end of the game, the began talking to me about the fans. He said, “boy you would never see anything like this happen in Green Bay! Everybody there loves their team to the core and wouldn’t allow the opposing team’s fans to dominate the stadium.” I tried to explain something about it, but was a lost cause because he is right. I’d say there are less than a handful of stadiums in the NFL that could even have the potential of being overrun by opposing fans. Unfortunately, UofP is towards the top of that list. I counted at least 5 people in that stadium on that day wearing Green Bay jerseys that I saw previously wearing Cardinals jerseys.
I’ve been in Dallas for 3 months and will be here 1 more week. The entire time I’ve been here, any time I began to talk football, the person I was talking to always assumed I was talking about the Cowboys and was shocked when they found out otherwise. In Arizona, when I begin a conversation about football, I’m asked who my favorite team is. That’s the difference. In Arizona, nobody assumes you’re a Cards fan. Sadly, their first assumption is that you aren’t a Cards fan.
It’s a lack of loyalty that you don’t find in most markets. I want that loyalty in AZ.
Too Many Bandwagon and Second Fav's
Cardinals “Fans” have earned this 30th place ranking. Let’s be honest, far too often our stands are filled with half Cards jerseys and half away team jerseys. What is pathetic and I hear it regularly is fans that say, “the Cardinals are my second favorite team.” This seems to be the case most of the time. Consider the Packer game at the end of this last regular season. I’m willing to bet that a large portion of those Packer fans also had Cardinals jerseys at home.
This is to be expected, though, if you consider that Arizona hasn’t even had the team for a full generation, so to speak. Fans that are just now able to purchase season tickets were probably about 5-10 years old when the team moved here. It’s the older fans, the ones who can buy tickets to more games, that make up most of the fan base. And, unfortunately, most of those fans grew up cheering for other teams.
Because of this, I’m willing to be we see an enormous increase in fan support over the next 5-10 years as younger Cardinals fans start going to more games and the true supporters who’ve grown up in Arizona with the Cardinals always being here will start weeding out the older fans.
Make sense?
Agreed
Like I have said before, I’m also a Bears fan because of my dad being from Chicago [there are also a lot of people from New York, but I don’t pay much attention to their teams]. But, since I live in Arizona the Bears are my #2 team, Cardinals are #1.
Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears fan.

On Second Favs
Before The Cardinals I was a Steelers fan, and they were always my second fave and the team I usually followed into the playoffs, after Cardinals season. That all changed last year. Pittsburgh became the enemy, a worthy opponent that beat us on some key plays. I wear only Cardinals gear, I collect only Cardinals cards. I can watch any football game any time but I only care about who wins if it is the Cards or might affect their position in the standings.
Well within your rights
I agree we probably all have second favorite teams. The majority of us were around and watching football before the Cardinals ever came to Arizona. We probably had favorite teams, or teams we at least liked to watch, before the Phoenix Cardinals came into being. I’d never tell anyone they need disown a previous team.
However, fans need to choose. You can be a fan of a team and like another team. Do not, though, go around saying you’re a Cardinals fan and then, when Green Bay starts doing better, start saying you’re a Green Bay fan.
Like I posted above…I’m a Cardinals fan that loves to see the Chiefs play well. I’m a die hard Cardinals fan first and always and, when asked, no matter our record, that is the only team I mention. I’d be the first one to don my Cardinals gear to a Cards/Chiefs Superbowl and scream for the Chiefs to go down in flames!! I may have a soft spot for them, but I’m a Cards fan.
Converted Cards fan, not bandwagon
My situation is unique. First off I don’t live in AZ but decided to be a Cards fan for the rest of my life in the 2006 offseason by conscious decision. I’d really always liked them and my brother lived in AZ for 15 years and I loved vacationing there. To me it wasn’t jumping on a bandwagon, because they had a bad record in 2005. I hadn’t lived in my state of birth with my old team for 10 years so I had no personal connection to them anymore. I say “XXXXs fan by birth, Cards fan by choice”
I do know one other guy who lives in my area, who decided he was a Cards fan the day Dallas signed TO (no I don’t live in TX either). Can’t say I blame him. So this apparently does happen!
So hey I’m on the Big Red Bandwagon, or rather I was on it before it existed, before Whisenhunt and well before SB43. For me, the day I get off that bandwagon is when its time to get in the hearse
As far as second faves, personally it has to be an AFC team. I like the Dolphins but it’s not the same and rooting for them vs Big Red would never enter my mind. And as far as my team of birth/birthplace… I wish them well like I would an ex-wife, but I ain’t goin back.
Welcome to ROTB I-81
Just out of curiousity, who’s your team of birth?
What? I didn't break it, I was just testing its durability, and then I placed it in the woods becuase it's made out of wood and I just thought he should be with his family.
Revenge of the Birds
I moved out of the valley in 1994
but was able to come back for a few games at SDS and UoP. I remember watching the Quincy Carter led Jets beat the Cards like 13-10 one Thanksgiving at SDS when i was visiting my brother. Luckily, he has season tickets at UoP and I can go to any game I can fly in for. Have only been to 1 reg season game at UoP (Cardinals over Steelers in 2007—The Breaston Punt Return was amazing) and was fortunate enough to go to the NFC Championship game against the Eagles last season.
I can’t say that I have a 2nd favorite team, even though I’ve lived in PA longer than I lived in AZ. To me, you have a favorite team, one that you live and die for, and some teams that you don’t necessarily hate.
We all bleed Cardinal Red, but most of us don't recognize it!
Love It!
hahaha! reminds me of the windows decals I used to see that said, “I cheer for the Arizona Cardinals and whoever is playing Dallas!”
I have to say, one moment that stands out to me as being a Cardinals fan happened 2 years ago in Minneapolis, MN. I was walking through the Mall of America one day and I was sporting my Fitz jersey when some random person patted me on the back. All the person said was, “I love the jersey, man. That’s a great team right there.”
Up until that point, I don’t remember another time when I’d received praise for being a Cardinals fan. I never needed praise, of course, but it was nice to see people enjoy the Cardinals outside of Arizona. It was cool to see 2 strangers talk as friends with the only commonality being the Cardinals.
give us the arizona bandwagoners please, I used to be disgusted to go to Sundevil stadium and see “local” raider, cowboy, or anyother team in the NFL fans. Let the wins inspire the younger kids to be raised big red. I’d rather not be embarrased by all these people that move to phoenix and outnumber the Cards Jersey’s with their home teams they so fondly miss. Personally, I miss buying Nosebleed tickets for Sundevil Stadium for 15 dollars and then sitting right by the endzone on the lower level:) Those were the days. Fill up UofP Big Red, I don’t think you are band wagons because you finally have something to be proud of. A bandwagoner is an Arizona native that picks a team for it’s colors or history… I’m not saying you can’t like other teams, but if you are an AZ native have some loyalty. Those other teams just laugh at you. Take it personal.
Heck
I remember going to ASU stadium three times a year, a Card game, an ASU game, and either the D4 or D5 high school championship game. I always hated that place because I played D2 ball in AZ and we had to play at some local high school that sucked while all the big schools got to play at SDS. Brings back sour memories.
They are who we thought they were!
