Brandon Spikes 5.0 40 time

Brandon Spikes ran a 5.0 at his pro day, that means the Cards might be able to steal him in the 3rd round. Of course that might mean trading up(too low of a 3rd round pick). I mean Anquan ran a 4.7, and turned out great. Should the Cards do the same for Brandon Spikes. The possibility of a ILB, that at the beginning of the year was a projected 1st round pick and one of the major needs of our team, in the 3rd round is great, right? Thoughts??

Would be a steal IMO

I think we’re gonna do big things come draft day

What? I didn't break it, I was just testing its durability, and then I placed it in the woods becuase it's made out of wood and I just thought he should be with his family.

If he drops that far sure.

Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears fan.

I can't stand fair-weather/bandwagon fans, stick with your team, throughout the good and the bad.

Ouch

If that’s the case, he really doesn’t project well to the weakside of a 3-4 at all. The more I hear about Spikes, the more I’m thinking it may be more prudent to wait a few rounds and take Micah Johnson instead. Either way, I think both would be ideal back-ups for Hayes.

I'd be happy if he was available when we pick in the 2nd

there is no way he lasts until the 3rd. He is slower than I would have hoped, but he did run on a soggy field.

His draft stock is dead.

I’ll be very surprised if he’s picked before the 4th round. This is very reminiscent of Ali Highsmith, actually, who has done… nothing since we picked him up.

Slow forty time means little, especially for an ILB in a 3-4

Some guys just aren’t track runners. I really don’t think he is that slow, probably had a bad run. I think he still has value.

They are who we thought they were!

I think you’re underestimating how much value front offices place on 40 times. Brandon Spikes ran slower than some offensive lineman at the combine, for fuck’s sake.

Sure

But I won’t believe the guy was a starting LB in a very good D1 program and runs only a 5 flat.

Ok, I was wrong

I read his Florida scouting report and saw he ran the forty twice. He is that slow.

They are who we thought they were!

You make a good point

in that there can be a difference between track speed and football speed. Jerry Rice never had great times but it’s difficult to come up with a time when he got caught from behind.

Having said that, it seems the more reports that come out about Spikes, the more they are all coming back that’s he’s a strong-side ILB only, which has it’s value but will drop his stock significantly. I’d still like to have him, but not with a pick in the first three rounds.

by Long Beach on Mar 18, 2010 7:20 PM MDT up reply actions

But the difference here is that Brandon Spikes isn’t very fast on tape, either. He has limited range, can’t cover worth a lick, and is really only good against the run. We already have Gerald Hayes, do we really need another one?

by Chg91 on Mar 19, 2010 10:13 PM MDT up reply actions

For depth purposes

yes, because Hayes’ absence against the Saints was painful. However, I think you and I are mostly on the same page here because I don’t think Spikes would be worth investing an early round pick on, especially when a guy like Micah Johnson will likely be available in the late rounds and projects pretty much identically to the role I see Spikes filling for us.

But if we’re not reaching to get a back-up on the strong-side behind Hayes, yes, I think it would be a necessary upgrade over Beisel.

Yeah, I’m with you. If he’s still there after the 4th, then by all means, we might as well pick him up. But I just don’t think he’ll be that good of a player, we shouldn’t burn an early round pick on him.

Shuttle Run

The shuttle run is more important for evaluating LB’s than the 40.
