Revenge Of The Birds Community Mock Draft: 4th Pick, Washington Redskins
With the 4th pick of the Revenge of the Birds community mock draft, the Washington Redskins select...
Bryan Bulaga, Offensive Tackle, Iowa
Strengths: Bulaga is a well-rounded, physical blocker who can both hold his own in pass protection and maul in the run game. Ideal size for a prototypical tackle, (He's tall, but has a low center of gravity, huge wingspan, and is rock solid). His pass protecting is textbook and, over the years, has developed as an excellent run blocking lineman who is not satisfied with just taking out the man in front of him, he often moves on to the next level and tries to block a linebacker as well. After a rough start to his junior season, which included some missed games due to a thyroid condition, Bulaga closed it out with a bang by holding Georgia Tech’s Derrick Morgan without a sack in their big Orange Bowl match up. I expect him to have a similar effect on a team that Michael Oher had in his rookie year. Bulaga would most likely step in at the left tackle spot in Washington and shore up a vital position for years to come.
Weaknesses: Is still developing his run-blocking abilities even though he has shown great improvement over the past year. Is excellent against a speed rusher but may have trouble getting overpowered by the NFL's elite bull-rushers. Can get stronger in his arm extension but that will come over time. Still a young prospect at 20 years old.
Why the Redskins will take him: So far in the off-season, the Redskins have not gone to any great lengths to get rid of Jason Campbell. Combine that with the signing of RB Larry Johnson and, to me, this indicates one of two things. Either they are willing to give Campbell one last shot with a "revamped" running game or there isn't a quarterback in this years draft that they like enough to take a chance on. Besides their quarterback situation (or lack thereof), they're offensive line issues are downright scary. They lost Chris Samuels to injury and retirement and need to address the glaring hole he left as soon as possible, or else their quarterback will spend the majority of his time on his back.

I like this guy, but this is way too high to pick him.

I felt the same way for a bit
but on my board he fit the balance of BPA and most pressing need (IMO) after Okung was off the board. Personally I’m pretty anxious about investing such a high pick in a position that’s such a huge question mark like Clausen. Plus they got burned on picking Campbell in the first round so I made the safest pick I could.
If I could have I would have traded down in a heartbeat.

A lot of Mocks have them taking QB
A lock of mocks have Washington taking a QB. They could always try to get something for Campbell after the draft. They may be holding on to him as an insurance policy in case they don’t get their guy. Or, they play Campbell while they spend a year developing their draft pick. They definately need offensive line help though. I could see them going either way.
Mel Kiper is a damn fool.
No way the Redskins take Jimmy Clausen…at least that’s what those of us over at Hogs Haven pray every night before we go to sleep.
We’ve made a few moves to our O-line, but Andrew602 is right on in that we need SOMEBODY. I’m not certain Tampa Bay takes Ndamukong Suh over Gerald McCoy when McCoy is the penetrating 3-4 technique guy they need for their defense. I am a firm believer in drafting BPA…we’ll see. I have recurring nightmares about missing out on Bradford, Okung, AND Suh…ugh.
We're from the city with the highest murder rate in the country. Why WOULDN'T they call us the Bullets?

Since youre an avid Skins fan
and I’m a Cardinals fan trying to think like a Redskins fan, would you guys take Suh if he was still available? Obviously BPA would apply but with all the money invested in Haynesworth would you guy still devote 1st round pay to another D-lineman? Then again I heard Haynesworth’s role is going to be a little more versatile this upcoming year, if there’s any weight to that (pun intended) then does that make sense to you? Thanks.
