NFL Free Agency Open Thread: Cardinals Just Hope to Survive

The NFL's free agency period is officially underway and for the Arizona Cardinals, they're hoping that their two big fish don't land deals too quickly. Karlos Dansby is reportedly in Miami talking to the Dolphins and Antrel Rolle, who has already received a contract offer from the Dolphins, is looking to break the bank with a contract that will pay him about eight million per season (which would make him the highest paid safety in the league). Both Rolle and Dansby are also expected to draw interest from the Giants but no one has ruled out a return to the Cardinals either. Right now the best we can do is sit back and hope that neither player is blown away by a massive contract.

As for the rest of free agency, not concerning the Cardinals, there has already been some movement. The Chargers traded Antonio Cromartie to the Jets for a third round pick in 2011 and they also cut veteran nose tackle Jamal Williams. Williams will certainly be a target for any 3-4 defense looking for a traditional space eating nose tackle. The Lions have been awfully busing so far, signing Nate Burleson to a five year deal (25 million with 11 million in guarantees), supposedly on the verge of trading for defensive tackle Corey Williams from Cleveland and also making a solid push for former Cardinal and current Titan Kyle Vanden Bosch. The Panthers also made a bold move cutting quarterback Jake Delhomme despite still owing him $12.5 million in guaranteed money.

Use this thread for all free agent chatter and we'll update is periodically with news and/or various rumors.

Sack 'o Sacks?

could Porter be a new demon on the OLB spot in Cardinal-red? We certainly need to get younger at that spot, and while he won’t help that movement he should certainly bring a bit of ‘emotion’ and ‘spirit’ to a DEF that could use it!

Anyone wanna guess what this means......
“I just talked to Antrell Rolle!! And I already know what’s about to happen, man I’m speechless I’m going to Bed. I’m done with twitter BYE!”

That’s from Mr Nine-0 himself last night. Probably not good news for the Cardinals if it’s true.

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

by Bezekira on Mar 5, 2010 7:27 AM MST reply actions

Agreed

Sign Porter for some experiance and maybe make him into a role model for the young guys. Sign Jake as a back up to mentor Matt. Who knows maybe Jake can be the new Kurt Warner restart a down carrer in Cardinal red.Bring Jamal Williams in to start at nose tackle. Thats not to much to ask is it?

Remember no matter where you go in life...there you are!

by McCards010 on Mar 5, 2010 7:29 AM MST reply actions

so Porter, a guy who in past has assaulted an opponent in a casino and got into a pregame fight with an opposing fullback, is a mentor for young guys? What exactly are we trying to teach Cody Brown and Will Davis?

And what is Jake Delhomme going to teach Matt? How to turn the ball over 21 times in 11 games?

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

by Bezekira on Mar 5, 2010 7:59 AM MST up reply actions

Agreed

Porter wouldn’t be brought in to be a role model. His role would be to come in as a stop gap until Brown and Davis have learned enough to start playing most of the downs.

Delhomme is not a good choice to backup Leinart at all. I would much rather have a David Carr or Charlie Batch.

by Pyromnc on Mar 5, 2010 8:04 AM MST up reply actions

Porter would be a stop gap and that's about it

Sounds like the Cardinals are targeting David Carr, which I don’t mind.

What? I didn't break it, I was just testing its durability, and then I placed it in the woods becuase it's made out of wood and I just thought he should be with his family.

What...

If I hear one more person say “Bring Jake to the Cards, he could be like the new Warner.” I am going to throw up. Do the cards have a fetish with signing old balls? Warner worked out. But he was the only one. Emmitt Smith did nothing, James did next to nothing. Maybe we could bring back Neil Lomax. How about we find a young QB that can give us security for a long time like Manning has with the Colts and Big Ben will do with the Steelers. I am just not into buying used cars.

TE Brandon Manumaleuna just signed a 5 year contract with the Chicago Bears.

Could this mean Greg Olsen is on his way out? We all know how Mike Martz never really utilizes those athletic tight ends, so it would not surprise me to hear of a trade before the draft in late April.

by Pyromnc on Mar 5, 2010 7:47 AM MST reply actions

According to Yahoo Sports....
Rolle, who had 72 tackles last year and four interceptions, reportedly said no to an ofer from the Cards that was worth $32.6 million over six seasons.

That’s a pretty strong offer so I don’t want to hear any bitching and moaning about us being cheap if and when he does leaves. That’s a damn good offer for Rolle.

i'm okay with letting him go

free safety is not a premier position unless we’re talking about a troy palamalu or ed reed. 3/4 of our secondary went to the pro-bowl last year, and our pass defense still sucked. i’m okay with letting rolle go, provided we spend some of that money on a good pass rusher and some linebacker help (larry foote?)

Not sure either of these signings really improve the team but I’m sure Lions fans appreciate the effort. This is another reason why I’m glad we don’t jump into this frenzy.

by Bezekira on Mar 5, 2010 9:09 AM MST reply actions

The Bosch signing makes more sense.

He played under Jim Schwartz when he was the defensive coordinator at Tennessee. The Burleson signing was a little puzzling though. I just don’t see him being worth as much as Detroit gave him (25 million with 11 million in guarantees).

by Pyromnc on Mar 5, 2010 9:33 AM MST up reply actions

Its a good move

He can still bring a solid pass rush at his age. It also brings in a big face to the defense, something the Lions and fans haven’t been used to. Burleson was a good sign IMO. Bryant Johnson just doesn’t cut it as a #2 and Burleson is also a threat with punt returns.

Yea, but is he worth how much they gave him?

A 5 year deal at 25 million is a lot for a player that has had injury problems the past 2 seasons and has been inconsistent for most of his career.

I do agree with him being better than Johnson though.

Dansby coming back

I want Dansby back dont get me wrong. i however dont know if I want him back for the type of money we will have to pay him. If we think about the kind of money its giong to take is it worth giving up on that one player? Lets remember that the last THREE years have been contract years for Dansby and before that he always had a bad rep for not fighting through injuries and being lazy. Did he mature? Who knows. All that money coming his way you have got to think he will sit back on it a little.

I would love to have him back like I said, the amount of money we would have to give makes me concerned.

Ravens targeting Boldin?

According to this link, if the Ravens miss out on Kevin Walter, Boldin will be their priority. With the asking price down to a third round pick, there’s about a 0% chance that Boldin will be a Cardinal by draft time.

Lito Sheppard was cut by the Jets

He’s not great or anything but if we’re looking for a younger CB to add some depth, we could do much worse. He struggled last year but he also has some upside.

This is what needs to happen.

Sign Lito Sheppard and trade Boldin for Greg Olsen.
Fill the need for a pass rusher and nose tackle in the draft.

Found it

From Sept 5th, 2008:

The biggest concern heading into this Sunday for the Arizona Cardinals has to be the injury situation, especially at the nose. Gabe Watson is already out, although he did practice for the first time this offseason, yesterday (on a limited basis). Alan Branch hasn’t practiced this week at all and his status for the game isn’t looking good. If he can’t go on Sunday, Bryan Robinson will start and Kenny Iwebema will be the backup.

That was actually the season opener against the Niners.

I think you're getting Ben Watson confused with either

Gabe Watson or Ben Patrick. Ben Watson is the former TE of the Patriots.

Ware is the big one for me

Ive pretty much come to terms with Rolle and Dansby leaving (not that i like it) but ive dealt with it. Ware is someone i think has alot of talent and can keep growing.

Ware and Rolle

I don’t know if this is how you really meant to say this but it’s worth mentioning that the “up and coming” Ware is actually 14 days older than Rolle. Granted his on the field experience isn’t even comparable but the thought that Ware might be a star just waiting to bust out might be a bit misguided.

True but I just haven't heard much about us even talking to other less popular free agents

Like Clark Haggans when we signed him. If Rolle leaves signing Ryan Clark (ex-Steeler) would make sense. And Larry Foote (ex-Steeler) at ILB would be sweet with Porter (ex-Steeler) at OLB would be a good tandem again and none of them should command that much. Is there a pattern here or is it just me?…

True but I recall hearing rumors about it about a week before the signing.

Just seems like there’s either not much going on this offseason for us or they’re being much more secretive about it, more than likely the latter of the two.

Not much going on for a lot of teams.

The only teams that have really made moves are the Bears and Lions. Sure there has been chatter about certain players, but that’s just chatter.

Adam Schefter Tweeting that Seattle is considering signing Brandon Marshall.

If Seattle signs him to an offer sheet and Denver chooses to not match it, Seattle would lose the 6th pick in the draft to Denver.

by Pyromnc on Mar 5, 2010 12:37 PM MST reply actions

Even with Q

Mainly because of his injury issues and the factor of Hasselback vs Leinart. If the Seahawks go with Hasselback that is if that changes and they get a rookie I think it would swing back to us.

1st Stallworth - 2nd Bryant - 3rd not Boldin

I made a post awhile back about the dwindling possibility for a Boldin trade to Baltimore to take place. They are apparently pushing hard to land Antonio Bryant. If he signs there that is one less team that would chase Boldins services after signing Stallworth and POTENTIALLY A. Bryant

Welker – 234 receptions, 2513 yds
Boldin – 173 receptions, 2062 yds

I’m a die hard cardinals fan too but those are the numbers. Plus Welker stays healthy which is key.

Ironic how Welker was put on injured reserve before the playoffs

Im not a huge Welker fan. Maybe I just prefer a wide out that doesn’t shy away from contact. Welker hits the ground anytime a defender approaches. I’d rather have somebody fight for an extra yard.
