The Cardinals will do good
Anquan Boldin was traded to the Ravens. Karlos Dansby went to the Dolphins. Antrel Rolle is headed over to the Giants.
I've been reading article after article, on Yahoo Sports and on here. I've seen some good points made. But I just want to make this plain and clear:The Cardinals aren't in grave danger because they gave up three players. Anquan Boldin is one of my favorite players. He's good and I respect him as a player, but let's face it, he wasn't happy here. Nothing was going to make him happy except a $20 million contract, which the Cardinals couldn't afford. He was good, but he wasn't the whole team. I still respect him, but like I said, he wasn't happy, and it was better this way. At least the Cardinals got some Draft Picks, which they can use for their defense.
As for Karlos Dansby and Antrel Rolle, they got what they wanted. They're both being paid tons of money, which the Cardinals didn't want to give up for obvious reasons. They were good, but they can be replaced. It's fine that we lost them. We have two extra draft picks(Well, one since we traded our 5th Draft Pick with Anquan Boldin). We can replace them.
So to everyone jumping with joy or sobbing in misery because you think the Cardinals are done as the NFC West Powerhouse, I would advise you to stop. First of all, the Draft hasn't even happened. Who knows what could happen there? The Cardinals could end up with some really good players. Tom Brady, the star QB for the Patriots, was drafted in the 7th round of the Draft. Look how he turned out. Also, we've got some extra Draft Picks, and we've still got a good team. The Cardinals aren't done. They're just getting started.
Edit)I think Long Beach said it well. Also, let me put it this way. Give the Cardinals a chance. Wait until the Draft is over. Don't go panicking right now. There's still lots of time. You could be right, you could be wrong. But don't panic now. Like Long Beach said, this might have set them up for long-term success.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Revenge of the Birds' (ROTB) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of ROTB's editors.

man, you don't understand what has happend here!
This ownership/front office doesn’t have a history of signing stellar free agents to play here! If you are counting on this organization to simply draft the talent that has left this team, then you’ll be waiting 2 perhaps 3 more off seasons. the cardinals are now back to drafting in the top 12 again!

Blah, blah, blah.
Its a new day. If you don’t want to be supportive, pick a new favorite team. And don’t give me that crap about being realistic. Negative begets negative. Its a nasty cycle. Try something new for a change and support the new direction. Has it let you down in the last three years?

spending on free agents doesn't always lead to success
I am an az sports fan to the bone, but now live in the dc area. I’ve seen first hand for years how the skins owner would try and snag top free agents to buy a championship only see them get fat paychecks and get lazy. The saying here before this year was ‘if you want to get paid, play for the skins’. Coach Whiz has never had a losing record since being HC for the cards, so until I see some else I will back his judgement.
Before we sound the alarm
keep in mind that we lost two players off a defense that gave up consecutive 45 point games in the playoffs for us. While I like them and think of them as solid, sometimes spectacular players, they are not irreplaceable.
We’ll have a different look going forward, but there’s no doubt in my mind that this regime has positioned us for long-term success, and that isn’t something I could say even in the most heated debates with past front offices.

How has management set this team to succeed?
This defense alone before rolle and dansby left was 2 or 3 players short of being a good defense. now they are 5 players away. If you’re trying to say that they can fill in those spots with draft picks i disagree! there are no impact free agents left out there and to expect that whoever they do bring in will be an impact player isn’t sound thinking. they cannot trade anyone else without weakening another position either. so how has management set this team up for success? Everyone seems to believe that this upcoming draft is going to set this team up and thats highly unlikely! If they’re lucky, 2 or 3 impact players will be found and the rest will be fillers. I didn’t even mention warner and boldin leaving. another thing people need to understand is that with the great offensive talent this team had, it was easier to score points. now without warner and boldin it’s going to be much tougher! i’m amazed that people don’t understand this. Who’s going to make those tough catches underneath now? breaston while he is decent, is a slot receiver and doucet is still unproven and injury prone. both aren’t aren’t that good against press coverage either. at least when times where tough on defense, you could always say that that the cardinals had a punchers chance because of the once formidable offense. that is in the past now! This team will be lucky to win between 6-8 games now and it’s a shame because this should be an elite franchise but mismanagement has destroyed that!

One simple question.
Everyone keeps talking about all the stars we lost and how they can’t be replaced. My question is what’s more important? Star power or chemistry? I think that as long as the cohesion is there, we can survive without major star power until our future stars step up.
Life's too short. Be a fan. Orlando Magic, Arizona Cardinals,Tampa Bay Rays and of course "the U"! What a winning combo.
okay.....
name 1 team that has won a title without stars on it! chemistry comes when everyone believes that a title can be won with who is in the locker room. I’ll assure you that won’t be the case in training camp. the only talk you’ll be hearing is " we have a chance to compete". Not win a title, just be competitive.
by lifelongcardfan on Mar 6, 2010 7:07 PM MST up reply actions
The Patriots.
They won before their QB became a household name. They won with a bunch of mediocre players and MAYBE 1 or 2 stars. Next Question. I can see you don’t like to be challenged. You seem to be getting pissed. Relax. Its just my opinion against yours. And believe it or not, yours is just an opinion and not a fact just like mine.
Life's too short. Be a fan. Orlando Magic, Arizona Cardinals,Tampa Bay Rays and of course "the U"! What a winning combo.
To answer your headline question
By not breaking the bank for players who aren’t worth the money they received. Granted, there’s no cap for 2010 but don’t kid yourself, it will be back and teams that are overspending now will be stuck when the new one comes out. Building up replacements through the draft, contrary to your thoughts of development, is the surest way to go. DRC is already one of the best CB’s in the league, Wells and Campbell are primed for breakout seasons, Breaston and Doucet were very productive in the playoffs, etc. It doesn’t take a long time for young players to make significant contributions.
Regardless of that, look our roster over and you’ll see there’s still a lot in place. Our secondary, DRC and probably Toler at the corners, Wilson at SS and unknown at FS. Linebackers, which needed serious upgrading on the outside before all this happened, will probably already be upgraded with Davis and/or Brown over Okeafor and a very strong OLB class in the draft. Granted, still leaves the hole at ILB that Dansby leaves but it’s not the most difficult position to fill.
D’Line, already great at the DE positions with Campbell and Dockett, NT needs upgrading but again, nothing that happened yesterday changed that. Offensively, it was already known that Leinart would face the monumental task of replacing Warner but according to all reports seems up to the challenge. Boldin has been covered for on numerous occasions and things rolled on smoothly in spite of his absence.
With our recent draft history we could very well end up upgrading both Dansby and Rolle in the next couple of seasons. I’m certain of this, whoever we draft won’t take as long to develop as they did.
There were 2 probowlers..
"What I've achieved now is something that I always figured I would as a kid. I've had that type of determination since I was a youngster playing around the playgrounds, getting dirty after school." - Amare Stoudemire
Sort of
While I’ll always think of Boldin as a legit pro-bowler, both Dansby and Rolle were borderline, Rolle got in as an alternate.
Our other legit Pro-Bowlers are still largely in place (Fitzgerald, Wilson, Dockett, DRC). I think Wells and Campbell could very well be on their way. Think of today as the ultimate compliment to what we’ve done here, they paid top dollar for two of our guys that aren’t even the best we have to offer.
by Long Beach on Mar 5, 2010 11:26 PM MST reply actions 2 recs
Los and Rolle were listed as the #2 and #10 overall free agents on the market
When I saw this, it occurred to me simultaneously how well-respected our players are outside of the team, and how completely implausible it would be to resign either of them. For a team like New York, who’s only glaring hole last year was the safety position, it would have been silly for them not to go after Rolle. Everyone expected Dansby and Boldin to leave. We were prepared for this.
What we learned today is that we are getting appreciation from the rest of the league, and I should think — especially for you old fellas — that, despite the short-term logistic problems we may be facing, the fact that we have bred such coveted athletes bodes well for our current leadership.
A little of both
But its still amazing that so many teams wanted a piece of the pie.
What? I didn't break it, I was just testing its durability, and then I placed it in the woods becuase it's made out of wood and I just thought he should be with his family.
Revenge of the Birds
Purple Koolaid
I’m a Ravens fan, but if the team got rid of Ed Reed, Ray Lewis and Derek Mason (of course when they were younger like Q, Rolle and Dansby are) all at the same time, I’d be pretty mad.
How are you going to replace that kind of production next year? You might be able to draft good players, or even future hall of famers, but you will not be competitive next year or the year after. To say that there is a power shift in your division is an understatement. The only hope you have is that you play in one of the weakest divisions in Football.
Let’s face it, your QB is one season away from being labeled an absolute bust. Right now he is just a bust in the making.
I’d be very worried about your front office plans. You don’t have a playoff tradition like other teams have. Some teams can lose stars and still produce new ones out of nowhere. But the Cards don’t have a track record of that. What it comes down to it: sometimes you have to spend a lot of money to retain your players.
Seriously?
Purple Koolaid, do you really think that? We lost three players. The whole Cardinals team isn’t in danger. The Defense gave up how many points in the playoffs? That’s right, it wasn’t very good. So we lost a WR. We have three more. We’re a WR factory! The Cardinals are one of the biggest passing teams in the NFL.
Two players can be replaced. If we had lost Larry Fitzgerald or Dockett, that would be something. But no, we didn’t. We can replace them.
for real for real
You really think Leinart will be able to hold Warner’s jockstrap? You lost 3 probowlers and you tell me you won’t miss a beat. Is Bill Belichick or Tony Dungy coaching your team next year? The Cards had a prolific offense. You take two pillars off that structure and everything starts to crumble. To top it off, your defense is downright awful. Now you lose two real good players in Dansby and Rolle, and you tell me that you’ll be alright? Child please.
Let’s recap. You lost a hall of fame QB and Pro-Bowl wide receiver. You lost 2 very good defensive players. Your running game is far from being solidified. You don’t have a solid QB. You have one great WR. The rest are question marks. Your defense is one of the worst in the league, before they lost 2 of their best players.
So can you now tell me how you are not going to be in the bottom of your division?

Keep guessing
Thinking back to last year, I seem to recall the same predictions of doom followed our front office around as well (you lost your O.C., D.C., Antonio Smith signed with Houston, the Super Bowl curse, etc.). Calais Campbell didn’t miss a beat replacing Smith, and we increased our win total from 9 to 10 without Haley and Pendergast.
However, you may be on to something when warning us about QB busts – your organization has written the book on that subject.
Leinart does suck
Dude,
I’m not here to talk against your team. We’re not even rivals. Just stating the facts. Leinart is terrible. You’re in denial if you think you’re not going to miss a beat with Kurt Warner and Anquan Boldin gone. Yeah, the Ravens have had some of the suckiest QBs to ever play the game. But they also have a Superbowl win in their short NFL presence. Now they have one of the rising stars in Flacco. Two years in the NFL lead the team to the playoffs. It’s not about me against you or Ravens vs Cards. I liked the Cards last year and the year before. I wanted them to win the Superbowl. They had a very good offense, and the running game is coming along. But you cannot look at your self in the mirror and say to yourself that Leinart is the answer. The guy is a complete bust. Sorry you’re in love him. He is another Kyle Boller. There, I said it.

is cause I’m killing time before I go to work. You can’t honestly believe we care what you think. Didn’t he lose the competition for starting QB with Troy Smith. He only became the starter after Troy got sick. Not the same as losing your job to a future HOFer. Get over yourself.

what????
Troy Smith was going to start only because they want to ease Flacco in. If he is that good, why don’t team trade for a 5th round pick to get him? Yea that’s what I thought! Flacco lead his team to the AFC Championship game in his rookie season. The AFC North=toughest division in football. AFC toughest conference in football. Oh, and did I mention he did it with no legitimate wide receivers?
Leinart had Fitz, Q to throw to and still can’t make a throw to save his life. You’re luck you had Warner.

What they did was terrible. I’d get rid of those season tickets if I were you. How can you have such a good team that was on the rise, and blow it all away because you can’t pay for it? We are defensive because you keep insisting that we should be mad at our front office. Why? Because they helped get us to two winning seasons and a superbowl appearance? Extended the guy who got us there? And what FACTS are you talking about? Facts are indisputable. We lost good players but doesn’t spell the end of the world.
Need we state our facts again?
They got way overpaid. Small market teams shouldn’t over pay for talent.
Again?
Rolle was over paid. I would actually be angry if WE made him the most paid safety in the league.
Dansby? Fired his agent when we tried to reach a deal with him. Obviously the dude was leaving. Can’t blame the front office for that.

What are you basing your observation
on? Leinart was close to beating Warner out for the starting job a couple of seasons ago, and has shown tremendous improvement in his footwork, which has always been his biggest issue so let’s see how this season plays out before calling him a bust (not that I can recall mentioning Leinart in my post, or saying that we wouldn’t miss a beat without Warner). Boldin, as great as he is, has been replaced very ably when he’s been out – which is becoming more and more frequent as the years go by.
What’s this about a short NFL presence? If you’re not counting your time in Cleveland then I guess we don’t count our time in St. Louis.

Just answering your questions, you were the one who said we don’t have a history of replacing our players, and that we’re headed for doom next season. All I did was state that we heard that last year as well. Ok, I made fun of your QB history but you lead into that with your “Leinart is a bust” rant.
Look
Purple Koolaid, we lost three players. Three. Big deal. First of all, we got some extra draft picks that we can use on our Defense. Watch our Defense get a major makeover in these next few weeks. As for our running game, we have Chris Beanie Wells, who just soaks in potential, along with Tim Hightower. Larry Fitzgerald is one of the best WR’s in the game, and Steve Breaston and Early Doucet had their break-through at the end of last season. We’ve got good linemen in Dockett, Robinson, Campbell, and the rest. The one problem we do have is our QB. Kurt Warner retired, and we now have Matt Leinart. But keep in mind that Aaron Rodgers was the backup for Brett Farve a few years ago, and when Brett Farve went to Minnesota, Aaron Rodgers came out and look where he is now. Matt Leinart has been behind Kurt Warner for a long time. He’s watched and has already shown his eagerness to prove that he is good.
You say we’re going to be at the bottom of our division. With our team? I don’t think so.

While I don’t mind you stating the obvious to us, declaring that our team is doomed and that Matt Leinart is a bust won’t win you over on a Cardinals website.
I don’t think many Cardinal fans even consider Leinart a bust. Let’s take a look at his four seasons before we label him.
Season 1: Leinart wins the job from Kurt Warner and has a mildly successful rookie season despite the rest of the team being pretty bad.
Season 2: Leinart retains the starting position over Kurt Warner, but shares snaps with him. They rotate in games through the first five games before Leinart breaks a collar bone and hits the injured reserve. Through those 5 games, Leinart admittedly didn’t play well, but what 2nd year QB would when you’re being told you’re the starter but being shuffled in and out of the line up?
Seasons 3 and 4: Kurt Warner plays out of his mind and reverts back to his Hall of Fame ways. Who could call Matt Leinart a bust when he can’t beat out a future Hall of Fame quarterback that was playing his best football in years? Key words being Hall of Fame quarterback. This past season Leinart filled in for Warner in ONE game, and played well. His stats weren’t eye opening but he got the job done in his first action in three seasons.
And now we are here. So along that line, how can you label him a bust and then openly agree that Kurt Warner deserves to be in the HOF? You’re saying at Leinart should have beat him for the starting job?
As far as our defense, they did struggle the last two seasons with giving up big plays and gave up the most points in a two playoff game stretch this past season. Obviously change may be a good thing. Dansby never made the pro bowl and Rolle barely squeaked in as an alternate. While they are good at what they do, they are nowhere near the best in the league at their respective positions. The front office tried to match their offers, but they clearly wanted to play with different teams. Boldin has been wanting out, and wouldn’t work out a deal. We are still deep at wide receiver without him.
Now the FO traded for Kerry Rhodes and I believe we may sign Larry Foote on Monday. The draft will fill our needs at OLB as well. I think after the draft we’ll have a clearer picture of what the Cardinals will look like next season.
What? I didn't break it, I was just testing its durability, and then I placed it in the woods becuase it's made out of wood and I just thought he should be with his family.

It’s also painfully obvious that you know nothing about the history of this sorry a$$ ownership and the ridiculous things that they’ve done to destroy this franchise. The Rolle contract isn’t the first time they’ve reneged on a contract! They signed the guy to a deal, the player came through on his part, then the organization decides, they don’t want to pay him! what kinda bull crap is that? It’s going to be really interesting next year to see how you feel about leinart when they do the same thing to him! You also don’t understand how hard it is to build a playoff team and a super bowl contender either, or in fact, how to even build a good team! If you knew any of these things you wouldn’t be in here trying to paint a rosie picture here! Another thing that ticks me off about guys here is this crap that those guys got over paid! when you’re on a good team that means that you have good players! that also means that those good players have to be paid accordingly! it also means the salaries must go up in order to keep these good players. if this means that they have to be the highest paid at their position so be it! they won’t be the highest paid for long!
Finally i’ll bet your among the very first guys that will be in here talking about how you didn’t realize that it was going to be this bad and how you are looking forward to next years draft! Oh Whiner.
Do you understand small market economics? I’m guessing not because of your absurd expectations of our franchise. Pay Rolle 12 million dollars. The same kind of numbers guys like Fitz or Warner or Ed Reed or Troy Polamalu make? If we did I would be as hate filled as you are. How woud we sign our rookies after dishing out that kind of cash? Resign our studs? Its not like the Bidwells are the richest owners in the NFL and the Cards are in NY or LA. And lets remember this isn’t the older Bidwell in charge any more. Knowing the history of the team do you not remember when Bill Bidwell handed the team over to his sons?
Straight from Wiki “In recent years, Bidwill has ceded most day-to-day control over the Cardinals to his sons Michael and Bill, Jr., who serve as team president and vice president respectively.” Since those days we have made marked improvements, hiring of Whisenhunt most namely (who after his extension has more control), paying Warner 10 mil a year, the brilliant renegotiation of Larry’s contract? Making A-dub one of the highest paid safeties? Maybe you suffer from short term memory loss. But we reward the guys most deserving. Maybe you also forgot how the FO tried multiple times to renegotiate with Dansby? You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink. They guy was long gone by his own desire.
So where is your ire for the management coming from? We just traded for a very, very capable replacement for Rolle. We have three young OLB’s just biting at the bit to get their chance. We still have DRC who is a stud among studs. Don’t forget Calais and the big 9-0 (whom must be a priority to restructure).
Honestly dude I am doubting how much of a Card fan you are (Purple Kool Aid in disguise?). I am not blindly optimistic. I haven’t stated we are going to win the SB. If you have read any of my other posts you would see that I said we have taken a step back but we have not fallen on our faces. We will recover and we will recover fast. Maybe a down year but by no means a rebuilding year. The sky isn’t falling Chicken Little.
Lets add on more while I’m at it; lets not forget Beanie and his 4.4 YPC. The dude was a contender for rookie of the year and he didn’t even start! Doucet had a coming out party, Leinart lost his job to a HoFamer. Our O is still legit and since Whiz has been coach we have failed to score less than 20 points once (2007 on)! Grab a hold of yourself man! There is hope and I think the management has made some big mistakes, ie the structuring of some contracts (Rolle’s is unique, he was drafted as CB and CB’s usually make more than safeties). But they are getting better and making moves to keep us winners.
I am done talking to you about this. The hate is strong with you Padawan.

I have no problem with the handling of the Rolle or Dansby situations, the trade of Q or the retirement of Warner. I would have had a problem with paying Rolle or Dansby the kind of cash they got and the simple fact was we didn’t need Q and both Q and the FO knew it.
When you make the playoffs mutlipul years in a row, other teams are going to come in and take your players – that’s the NFL. You can’t keep them all and pay them all the moon. Doing so would be just plain stupid. Rhodes and Foote (or whoever) versus Rolle and Dansby just saved 50 million + that can go to other guys for many years. There will be a salary cap again and teams need to keep acting like there is one or they will get in deep trouble. Those two contracts would have been 12-15% of the teams salary cap for 5 years for a LB and safety. With a 53 man roster and a cap aroung $125M how many guys do you think can get paid $8M a year? It’s gotta be 4-5 guys tops on your team getting that kind of $$.
Teams that make big moves in FA tend to be desperate to win. The Cards FO is trying to set things up to be consistantly good.
I have no idea right now what the Cards record will be next year. The biggest questions is Lienart. If he plays at an NFL level Cards will be fine, if not it will be a long season, but I’ll still be buying tickets.

C'mon Man!!
Are you seriously comparing Ray Lewis to Karlos Dansby?!? Or Ed Reed to Rolle? Reed and Lewis are/were dominate players on one of the best defenses ever to walk the field. Both likely to one day enter the HOF. Are you not really a Raven’s fan or are you just stupid?
Frankly, comparing Mason to Q is an insult to Q as well.
Pull your head out! Your suffering brain damage from a lack of oxygen?

This guy is a troll
He created an id on SBN just to come on ROTB and give the cards crap. He isn’t even a member of the Ravens blog.
The facts are out now just call him “MEGATROLL.”

I heard that the Bears want to get rid of Olsen because Martz hates Tight Ends that can catch.
Anyone think that the team should go for him if that happens?
Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears fan.
I can't stand fair-weather/bandwagon fans, stick with your team, throughout the good and the bad.
With this
influx of draft picks, what are the chances we package them together to move up to the second, late first round?
I'd be surprised
if they did that because I’d think they’d want to fill as many holes as possible, plus with the draft as deep as it is it’s probably not necessary to move up to get a quality player.
Why would we want to do that?
Graves and Whiz have show skill at picking up guys in that later rounds and developing them. Big splashes in FA or in the draft are typically signs of desperation and rarely work.

Will see
Look i see your point on leinart purple koolaid but this is his season to prove u right or wrong. Everyone in ravenland thinks just cause u got boldin ur superbowl bound or something know this i love boldin mans a beast but hes always hurt due to the way he plays come playoff time for u guys hes gonna be where hes been the last two years on the bench hurt.
I am going to disagree on this one.
It may be possible for him to stay healthier in Baltimore for the reason that they are more of a run oriented team. Flacco can throw, but it isn’t going to be placed all on his shoulders. Then again it could just work out exactly the same, who knows.
A man from Dallas who bleeds red, not silver and blue.
But he's the #1 there so when they throw its going to him
I hope he does well, but my guess is he will get the same number of balls thrown his way and the same amount of hits which may well equal the same amount of time injured.

I wonder
If he will force himself through some injuries just to prove himself.
They are who we thought they were!
The man changed jerseys not personalities.
Of course he will force himself through injuries.
